SPIRIT OF PRENDIVILLE (PART II) “YOU CAN`T STOP THE BEAT”

Absentee Number: 9301 6270
15th May 2015
Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Staff
SPIRIT OF PRENDIVILLE (PART II)
Last week’s amazing week at Prendiville Catholic College is best summed up by
this email I received from Michaela Graziano. It truly captures lessons to be
learnt from our musical production and what is the spirit of Prendiville.
"The musical, although a small sample of students, demonstrates the widespread
differences of every student’s talents and personalities; whether they are a
ground-breaking extremist, a simple housewife or a joyous Corny Collins dancer.
These amazing, different and special characters are put together in harmony
through the love and support of staff and the passion of the individual to produce
what (in my opinion) was to be an amazing production. Similar is that of the rest
of the Prendiville community; every different and special student is put together in
harmony through the loving support of the staff and the beautiful nature of the
students themselves, to produce and respected and loved community that the
Prendiville Catholic College community.
The musical demonstrated the spirit of Prendiville not only on stage, but off stage
also. The cast, band and crew are all hardworking, dedicated individuals that
strive towards the common goal of Broadway greatness. I met and bonded with
so many girls and boys that I would have never have had the chance to bond
with; whether they be Year 12's or Year 8's. Likewise in the Prendiville
community, the opportunities given to us allow for us all to make lifelong friends
and new relationships; positive ones with both peer and teacher. As a community
we strive towards the common goal of individual but also College greatness. The
love, support and care that oozed from this production and the people in it is
something that you cannot forget; it is something that will always be cherished.
So I believe that the spirit of Prendiville is the strong sense of community; and
the love, support and passion of all those in that community. The musical opened
my eyes, and my heart, to seek the message of love and unity that is taught to
us, to be humble, grateful and to feel blessed.”
(Michaela Graziano – Mrs Edna Turnblad)
Thank you to everyone involved in this year's musical. A very large cast, crew
and band supported in many ways by a large number of staff. It was indeed an
honour to witness such a College event.
Hairspray was certainly much more than a good night out. The musical
highlighted all we stand for: acceptance of others, giving one’s best and the
power of working together and supporting each other. Simply, a fantastic
production to be celebrated by all.

Wow. On behalf of the production team there is
little left to say than thank you; to our wonderful
cast, crew and band who dazzled us with their
amazing performances and work behind the
scenes, the staff who so generously supported
the ensemble with their time and generosity, and the Prendiville community and parents for your
support. We congratulate all involved on five stunning sell-out performances that received five
consecutive standing ovations.
'You can’t stop the beat’, so keep an eye out for future newsletters regarding information on how to
purchase DVD’s and photo discs of the production.

COLLEGE PROMOTIONAL VIDEO
For those linked to our Facebook page you would have viewed our recently launched College
Promotional Video, posted on Monday.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Prendiville-Catholic-College-Official-Site/1424453921150633
Please take the time to visit our page and “like us” if you haven’t already done so. Then take the
time to enjoy the slick front of camera work provided by Year 11 students Phoebe Parker and
Ronald Rixer. Their contribution along with Rowan Van Blomestein and Jacob Langham’s was
outstanding and made the whole process enjoyable. https://vimeo.com/127442076
The video was part of a series of Catholic College promotions. We were all invited to devise a
unique take on our educational environment. The vocational arm of Catholic Education will use the
videos to promote each college on a state scale, hoping to attract prospective students.
Many thanks to those linked to our page, for your positive feedback.

SPORT NOTICES
CAS Sport
What a hectic first week of the Winter CAS Sport Season. Well done to all students and staff,
particularly those who were affected by the successful Hairspray production. It was a fantastic
effort by all involved to still compete in all teams against the winter powerhouse in Peter Moyes.
Hopefully now all students, staff and parents are able to settle into the routine of the season and
we can start producing some excellent results on the field/court.
All fixtures for the various teams have been placed on the schools SPORTAL Page as well as the
Term 2 Sports Timetable containing all trainings and game times. We have a bye next week
following our Round 2 fixtures against St Stephens Carramar. This provides an excellent
opportunity for all teams to complete another training session or play a scratch match against other
Prendiville CAS teams that is only going to improve our performances in the season ahead.
This year we have been unable to secure a bye in the second week of the Year 10-12 exam period
(Week 8). I hope that this will not affect our team numbers too greatly, particularly as many of them
have the potential to move onto the knockout round of the Champion Schools competitions. Please
start taking steps now that may still allow you to play and stay in contact with your coaches.
Remember you have made a commitment to you school and your teammates.
Interhouse X Country
Well done to all students, staff and spectators for making this year’s Interhouse X Country Race a
hugely successful event. Over 450 individuals contributed as either a runner, walker or official. It
was extremely pleasing to see many students unable to participate as a competitor helping staff as
officials.
The final points tally puts Romero House marginally ahead of Francis and therefore they are the
2015 X Country champions. Full points breakdown can be seen below.

YEAR 10 ITALIAN STUDENTS’ WRAP-UP: ITALY TOUR
Buongiorno a tutti!
The positive feedback just keeps flowing in from the Italian and Art students who are now back
from “the trip of a lifetime” spent in Italy over the last school holidays. The Year 10 Italian students
made up a large part of the group and without a doubt they have each come back more confident
in their spoken Italian and with a genuine love of the Italian culture and travel in general! Read on
and bask in the delightful afterglow and recommendations of these talented students who still miss
their host families and all the incredible sights. Thanks and congratulations must be extended to
everyone involved in coordinating and supporting the study tour, which helped to make it such a
great success. Grazie mille!
– Prof Restifo
“The trip was an amazing opportunity to improve
my Italian and make new friends. I would definitely
recommend it” – Georgia
“I really enjoyed the trip and to see such an
amazing culture. I had great experiences and met
new people to share our culture with” – Antonio
“The trip was absolutely amazing. I had a lot of fun
and learned a lot. Saw so many awesome things
and enjoyed seeing how the Italian culture works.
10/10 would recommend” – Conor
“During the trip I had a really good time, it was a lot of fun. I also learnt a lot while there especially
in Mondavio. My favourite place we went was probably Amalfi Coast or Venice but it was all great”
– Denver
“The trip was an amazing experience and a good opportunity to meet new friends and help me with
my Italian” – Keegan
“The Italian trip was definitely an experience I will not forget. Every second we spent there was
filled with non-stop excitement. I have strengthened relationships with my current friends and made
many more” – Harry
“The Italian trip was an amazing experience to travel to another country
and encounter the different culture. This trip will be a lifelong memory
that will never be forgotten” – Leah
“The Italian trip was the most amazing experience of my life. I made new
friends and learnt a lot more Italian” – Kiera
“It was amazing! We all became so close as friends and will all share that
experience and memory together! All the activities and hotels worked out
well and were enjoyed by everyone. My favourite places were probably
Amalfi, Venice and Rome. I would definitely recommend to the younger
years. ” – Eleise
“The Italian trip was unforgettable. We all bonded and made so many new friendships with people I
never thought I would become friends with. I learnt so many new words and got to live a whole
different lifestyle. We also got a lot of freedom and learnt to be independent. My favourite places
that we went in Italy were Sorrento, Florence, Venice and Mondavio. My favourite part of the trip
was definitely going to the Amalfi Coast and all the sites there. I would definitely recommend this
trip to any of the younger years doing Italian” – Amelia
“I loved the Italian trip. It was an amazing, unforgettable time where I went to new places and
experienced new things for myself. I wish we had more time to be there and possibly a little better
organisation of the meals and rooms. One thing we could expand on is going and spending more
time with the families. Mondavio itself got very familiar after a while and pretty boring if you didn’t
have anything do but walk around but I enjoyed it and would’ve liked more time there. The freedom
we got was amazing. I miss it so much. Wandering around doing your own thing. I don’t have
much of it here and it feels like my days are empty now. I would love to do it again and I would
recommend it to anyone who is a fence-sitter. I would try to get them to do it. Life is good in Italy”
– Josh
“The trip was amazing, a trip of a lifetime. I made friends with so many people that I didn’t know
before. The places we visited were beautiful, old, and had so much detail. The photos that I took
don’t even compare to real life. Spending time with our family in Mondavio was fun. It was a good
cultural experience which improved my understanding of the language so much more. I gained a
lot of independence on the trip. Having to walk places ourselves in a different country makes home
seem like nothing, having our own time to walk around and look at things ourselves. Overall the
trip was unforgettable. My favourite place was either Venice, Amalfi Coast or Sorrento” – Jenna.
PHOTOGRAPH OF THE MONTH
In this digital age we think it very appropriate that our College extends an invitation to the whole
College community to participate in our Photograph of the Month competition.
The theme of the photograph revolves
around our College community in the
main but we’d be pleased to receive a
quality photograph of any description
so long as it has a connection to
interesting people, the activities they
are involved in along with a unique
story about how the photo came about
and a short reflection on it.
Jay Baddock of Physical Education
fame won our March submission with
his brilliant shot from the surf, in
interesting conditions, taken on a Go Pro. The photo featured on our Easter Facebook Post
recently and had many likes. Our first Innaloo movie pass went to Jay.
We look forward to submissions from all over our College Community, send them to
[email protected]

NATURE NINJAS DESCEND ON THE KAARAKIN BLACK COCKATOO
CONSERVATION CENTRE
Our Gardening Club, the Nature Ninjas, have enjoyed a partnership with the Kaarakin Black
Cockatoo Conservation Centre over the last two years. Kaarakin volunteers have been providing
us with guidance and advice on how to help rehabilitate the school environment to help
endangered black cockatoos. We were invited to set up a display on the centre’s open weekend
that would encourage the general public to introduce native plants to urban gardens that would
provide food and nesting sources specifically for black cockatoos.
Our display was very warmly received,
featuring posters of suitable plants and
information on how to prepare the planting
site as well as native plant tube stock that
could be purchased by a gold coin
donation. The Nature Ninjas had a
fabulous time at Kaarakin over the two
days demonstrating their knowledge and
visiting the 160 black cockatoos in various
stages of rehabilitation. The interactive
aviary was especially a favourite with the
friendly birds coming down to meet the
students and play with them.
The Nature Ninjas would like to acknowledge the College for providing native plant tube stock for
our display and donating the proceeds raised to Kaarakin. We would also like to thank Men of the
Trees, Birdlife WA and the Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre for their ongoing
support.

PRENDIVILLE TECHSPOT
Prendiville TechSpot
Welcome to our TechSpot. This section of our newsletter is for students and
staff to share tips, tricks, ideas and apps to do with technology at
Prendiville.
This week, we look at apps to help your writing and thinking. Some of
these you may already have… but… why not download a new one and
see how it works with your brain?
1. Drawing while Writing
There are plenty of apps that help you draw, sketch and doodle
while you write. One of the best ones is Notability (which all
students are meant to have). Notability allows you to annotate
photos, label diagrams, sketch and write in a natural way. I like
how the app can “zoom in” to help you write more clearly. Other
great student-tested apps that allow you to draw and type
include Popplet, Penultimate, PaperDesk, inScribe and
NotesPlus.
2. Journalling
If you like to write every day, or if you want to document a trip or an experience, you will need
an easy-to-use journal. Day One is one of the best ones, with a beautiful visual layout. Clibe
allows for social journaling and drawing. Other ‘note-able’ contenders include NOTE’d,
NoteLedge for iPad, and Chronicle. Some function more like to-do lists and others include
full features such as saving to the cloud and social media integration.
3. Social Writing
Writing is much more fun with friends. Why not
try out a new way to write? It might be a great
way to work together on an assignment outside
of school or finish that letter with a friend. Padlet
doesn’t even require an app: set it up as a board
and share the URL in order to
collaborate. You can also try
Evernote, or the new Quip:
which allows you to have a
message-style chat while you edit
together!
If you need help with iPads or just want to ask a
question, feel free to drop into the iPad Helpdesk in
P1 at lunchtime on Mondays and Tuesdays. You can
also Direqt Message any time for help. We will be
happy to give you assistance.
