I read these words each week and ask what do they inspire in me.
They challenge oneself to try harder and perform better. These words
ask us to live, learn and work with “one foot in the air”, always striding
forward, constantly seeking our best. These words make it clear that
Mediocrity must never be accepted as a norm and must not be part of
our college culture.
Last week three significant leadership positions were advertised.
These positions, in addition to the Learning Support/Enrichment
Coordinator are a further response to strategic focus areas:
1. Director of Mission and Identity
This role aligns with the strategic direction of Discipleship. We aim to
be a College where faith is expressed through action, teaching
Religious Education is aspired to, students and parents value
Religious Education and appreciate that our broad curriculum sets us
apart. We aim to be a place where faith helps students with study and
their relationships with others.
2. Director of Diversity and Personal Excellence
The role aligns primarily with the strategic direction of Learning,
ensuring the College maintains a focus on Education support and
Enrichment. This includes students with learning challenges and also
gifted students.
3. Director of Academic Excellence
The role aligns with the strategic direction of Accountability, ensuring
the College maintains focus on providing support for the intellectual
development of every learner such that they each have the best
possible chance to excel personally. This role will focus on academic
accountability, in particular the use of data to help guide teaching to
ensure best academic outcomes for students.
I will keep parents and guardians updated of these appointments and
the appointment of Learning Support/Enrichment Coordinator in the
next newsletter.

SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPH DAY - THURSDAY 30TH APRIL
Annual school photographs will be taken on Thursday 30th April by Academy Photography. All
students must be immaculately attired in full College Winter Uniform, including blazer. The
following grooming standards must be adhered to:








Hair is combed and/or tied back if below the collar
Red, black or white hair ties only
Full winter uniform including blazer (College jumper not to be worn for photos)
Polished shoes
Correct jewellery
Ties must be worn and top buttons done up
Girls are to wear black stockings/tights
All badges removed
Students will receive envelopes during the following week and these will be individually named.
The envelopes must be given to the photographer on Photo Day (even if a student is not
purchasing photos). Instructions to parents regarding the cost and procedure for purchasing
photographs will be on the envelope and payment must be included when the envelope is given to
the photographer.
Spare photo envelopes will be available from Student Administration for new students and anyone
who needs a replacement. Envelopes for family photographs are also available from Student
Administration. Family photographs will be taken during lunchtime on Photo Day. It is the
responsibility of family groups to report to the photographer at the beginning of lunch to have a
photo taken.

NATIONAL COMPUTER SCIENCE SCHOOL CHALLENGE
The National Computer Science School (NCSS) Challenge is run by the
School of Information Technologies at the University of Sydney. It is run for
high school students as a competition to test their Python programming
skills. Last year all Year 11 students in Stage 2 Computer Science participated in the Challenge.
Each week for 5 weeks, a set of questions testing their evolving programming skills were posted
online. Participants had a week to submit their solutions to the Challenge website where they were
automatically marked. Across Australia, over 9000 students participated in the NCSS Challenge.

TERM 2 UNIFORM REMINDER
Students and parents are reminded of the change to Winter Uniform for all students from the first
day of Term 2. The College blazer is a compulsory item that must be worn to and from school until
the end of PCG each morning. Dresses that require alteration must be ready for the first day of
term to sit neatly at the top of the knee.
HAVE SUM FUN MATHEMATICS COMPETITIONS
Excitement and preparations are mounting for the
Have Sum Fun Maths Competitions to be held over
two weekends in March at Duncraig Senior High
School and Rossmoyne Senior High School. The
competition is organised by MAWA (the Mathematical
Association of Western Australia) and this is the first
time Year 7 students have been invited to participate.
Hundreds of young mathematicians gather from
schools across Perth to enjoy the competition. The
evening consists of four rounds of mathematical
problems and tie breaker questions at the end.
Representing Prendiville this year are two excited
Years 7 – 8 teams, one enthusiastic Year 9-10 team
and two very keen Years 11-12 teams. The Maths
Break Out area in D block is a hive of activity at
lunchtime as our five teams hone their team building
skills and work on past questions in a relaxed
atmosphere and guided by members of the
Mathematics department, Miss Paula Donohoe, Miss
Edel Maher and myself.
The object of the competition is to give teams of six
students the chance to extend their mathematical
ability, enjoy a friendly competition and, most
importantly, have fun.
We wish all our five teams fun in training and best
wishes for the competitions to be held on 13th March
and 20th March.

SERVICE LEARNING
Project Compassion
We are well into Lent now and there has been a whole lot of activity raising money around the
school for Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion appeal. The central theme of this appeal is
through donation we help people change their lives for the better. Please take the time to go to
www.caritas.org.au if you want to know more about how donations are used and keep giving
generously. House totals so far are: Brigid $727, Chisholm $650, Francis $465, McAuley $678,
Romero $275 and Salvado $407.
Year 11 Service Learning.
Congratulations to all the Year 11 students who completed 10 and in many cases more hours in
2014. Now the challenge in on to finish all 20 Service hours by Friday November 1 st, this includes
all the hours finished and signed, reflections completed and Essay typed up and submitted. Keep
your eye on the notices for opportunities and also coming soon the Prendiville Service learning
Portal.
Year 10 Service Learning
All Year 10 students will receive their journals on Friday March 27th. If you do service hours before
then keep records so they can be signed off. More information will be given to students and
parents then.

WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE
Congratulations to Year 9 student Thomas Norman CH6
who recently participated in the World’s Greatest Shave by
shaving his head to raise money for the Leukaemia
Foundation. Thomas said he wanted to do something
which was worthwhile and helpful and he has raised $500
- a fantastic effort. Well done Thomas.
Thomas is also to be commended on the responsible way
in which he approached the challenge as he sought
permission from his House Co-ordinator beforehand and
then ensured he adhered to the College uniform policy with regards to hair length.
P & F EASTER RAFFLE
A reminder that donations for prizes for the P & F Easter raffle are due by Friday
27th March 2015 please. All contributions can be handed into the Finance office. If
anyone has some cane baskets that can be used for wrapping prizes that they are
happy to donate, they would also be appreciated.
SPORTS NEWS
CAS Sport
The Term 1 Summer CAS season has been a whirlwind. Due to the 9 week term there will be no
finals played and given the position of our bye in the final round, Week 8 marks the end of the
summer season. I would like to thank all of the students, staff, parents, coaches, siblings and
friends who have supported the CAS program once again this year. Although we will not be able to
see our results until the conclusion of Week 9 fixtures it has been extremely pleasing to see
improvements in participation and commitment for a number of teams.
The conclusion of the summer season triggers the commencement of our winter CAS season in
Term 2. A similar process will be followed for students to nominate for teams they are interested in
trying out for. All students have been sent a link over Student CONEQT that will take them to the
online registration page. Term 2 CAS is very exciting as it includes standalone Year 7 teams that
are unavailable in Term 1. I am looking forward to seeing similar numbers across all teams signing
up and ready to represent their school.
Finally, any students who are interested in assisting as a student coach or umpire for the sports of
Basketball, Soccer, Netball and AFL please contact me directly to discuss these options further.
ACC Swimming Carnival
Following our Interhouse carnival last week the 2015 Inter School Team has been named.
Students received their Permission Slips this week at school and it is imperative that these are
returned before the day of the Carnival (Tuesday 24th March). The Team and event allocations
have been placed on the PCC Sportal page on Coneqt for both parents and students to view.
Carnival programs can also be downloaded from the SPORTAL page for those parents who may
be interested in attending as a spectator on the day. Any parent who may be able to assist at the
carnival as an official, please contact me at the College at your earliest convenience.
100K Club
As swimming wraps up for this year we move straight into preparations for the Cross Country
carnival meaning 100K Club is on again. Although we do use it as a training program for the ACC
Cross Country carnival in Week 5 of Term 2, it is targeted and tailored to all students in the College
and many students use it to improve their fitness for other sports outside of school or simply to
challenge themselves. The general premise of the 100K Club is that every kilometre each student
runs is recorded and students work towards reaching the 100km mark. Totals are continued in
subsequent years and it was pleasing to see a large number of students last year reach milestones
of 300, 400 and even 500km. Students who wish to participate must collect a permission slip from
me in the PE and return it signed before they are allowed to participate. This also contains all
necessary information for both parents and students. 100K Club training will start on Monday
morning of Week 9. Students are to meet in the Gym foyer at 7am.
Senior Boys Football
Training has already commenced for our Senior Boys AFL Team as they prepare for the 2015
Season in Term 2. Any boys in Years 10-12 who are interested in playing should speak to the
head coach Mr Stephen Lynch for more information.
Sporting Excellence
Once again a number of Prendiville students have participated and performed very strongly in the
Junior State Surf Life Saving Championships. Congratulations to the following students on your
outstanding individual and team achievements.

Deon Waldmeier (Year 10) has been accepted into the National Scouting Recruitment
programme in America. Once Deon finishes his studies at Prendiville he will be able to continue to
study at an American College whilst playing Soccer.
If your son/daughter has achieved high level sporting success in their pursuits outside school we
would love to hear about them so they can be acknowledged for their achievements. Please

PRENDIVILLE TECHSPOT
Welcome to our TechSpot for 2015! This section of our newsletter is for
students and staff to share tips, tricks, ideas and apps to do with
technology at Prendiville.
This week, are examining some things that you need to be aware of
when using your iPad.
1. Using Your iPad Too Much – Screen Time
Think about how often you are using your iPad and make sure that
you have ‘eye breaks’ away from the screen. Long-term focusing
can give you headaches, can alter your posture and affect your
sleep! Look into the distance for 10 seconds for every five minutes
you use your iPad intensively. Remember that you have been
using it at school, for most of the day, so don’t let its glow keep you
up at night as well. Charge your iPad overnight away from
bedrooms.
Backing Up
This is something students don’t tend to think about until disaster strikes. Can you get your
work from your iPad if you lose access to it? iCloud is good for photos and documents, but
what about notes in Notability or textbook copies in GoodReader? The College
recommends using DropBox or SkyDrive to back up your work. If your teacher has set up
a folder for you on the Student_Uploads drive, this is a great place to move important
work as well. Even emailing assignments to yourself is better than nothing. Back up
regularly – this is your responsibility!
2. Where are you going online?
Remember that our system logs you in as soon as you step
onto the school grounds and connect to the network. It logs
what apps you have open, as well as messages sent, tabs
open in Safari and so on. Make sure that you close down apps
and tabs between home and school to avoid any issues. If you
wouldn’t risk it at school, don’t risk it at home either!
3. The False Anonymous Factor
If you think you can hide behind a screen as you make that
comment or post that image, think again. Every time you log in,
you leave a fingerprint that can be traced – both at school and
outside of school. If you wouldn’t say it to their face, don’t say it
online. Think about your reputation in the future – what will
others be able to find out about you online?

Medicine Information Session
When: Sunday 22 March 2015, 10.30am
Where: Tannock Hall of Education (ND4), Corner of Cliff Street and Croke Street
This session is appropriate for Year 11 or 12 students who are contemplating a career in Medicine.
The event will cover course information relating to the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery
(MBBS) and Pre-Medicine Certificate. During the morning several aspects of these courses will be
discussed, including the selection process, course structure, and important dates and deadlines.
Curtin Event:
Twilight Campus Tours
Thinking about attending Curtin when you finish school? Later in the year there will be information
evenings that can assist you to decide whether Curtin is the place for you to study. Until then why
not take a campus tour to give you some more information about the Curtin. Twilight Tours involve
Curtin students showing you their favourite spots on the Bentley campus and where they study and
take classes. Future student advisors will also be available to answer questions about applying to
Curtin. Express your interest for the 2015 Twilight Tours and a Curtin representative will contact

Parents and Friends Federation of Western Australia
Notice of change to PFFWA Constitution
The Parents and Friends Federation of Western Australia is proposing a minor change
to their Constitution to alter the number of required general meetings each year from
eight (8) to 4 (four). This change will be voted on at the Annual General Meeting on
Wednesday 27th May.
Rationale for change:
1. The ability to communicate with Councillors between face-to-face meetings has become
increasingly easier and more convenient
2. Councillors tend to be active on other committees within their school and community and one
less meeting per term makes it easier for them to contribute to their other commitments.
3. It assists both in time away from home and meeting the cost of travel for country-based
Councillors
4. It still provides the ability to have more meetings should they be required
