May 24 – Pentecost Sunday - Pro

24 MAY 2015
PENTECOST
SUNDAY
We hear in the first reading that, as the Holy Spirit comes, the once-fearful disciples are
transformed. Their fear of those who would persecute them gives way to a new courage to
proclaim Christ’s resurrection. In the Gospel, Jesus bestows the Spirit on the disciples, sends
them to do his work, and gives them power to forgive sins. It is clear that many of the disciples
were terrified after the death and ascension of Jesus. It took the power of the Holy Spirit for them
to courageously proclaim the Good News. We need to be, filled with the Spirit, so our word and
example may reveal God to others.
Our Parish Mission Statement
We, the members of the Pro-Cathedral
of the Assumption community, believe that we have
been called through Baptism to live the Good News of
Jesus Christ under the patronage of Mary, our Mother.
We accomplish this by proclaiming the Word,
celebrating the Sacraments,
and reaching out to others.

Our faith community dates back to 1886 when we were
originally located on Main Street West and called St. Mary’s
of the Lake and the cornerstone of the existing Cathedral was
laid in 1904. The history of our parish is recorded in the
memories of thousands of people who built our community.

the newly consolidated John XXIII and Corpus Christi

We are pleased to share that Holy Cross

The holy cross is a powerful sign of true love,
sacrifice and humility. It reminds Christians of
God's love for us in sacrificing his own son for

For more than 120 years, tens of thousands of Aboriginal
children were sent to Indian Residential Schools. They
were taken from their families and communities in order to
be stripped of language, cultural identity and traditions.
This has left an urgent need for reconciliation between
Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission mandate is to
find out the truth about what happened at these schools
and then inform Canada. The Commission hopes to guide
reconciliation and renewed relationships based on mutual
understanding and respect.
Many people will be gathering in Ottawa from May 29 to
June 3 to mark the ceremonial close of the Commission.
In 1983 Marvel Comics produced a comic book life story
of Pope John Paul II.
That comic book was so
successful that Marvel decided to do one for Mother
Teresa that was published in 1984!

During this time of reconciliation and truth please pray for
all who are involved:
Dear God,
We pray for the work of the Canadian Truth and
Reconciliation Commission,
for the survivors of residential schools and their
descendants who will share their stories;
for those who will listen, absorb and learn;
for those who will help us to continue the journey of
healing and right relationship:
for the courage to speak and the compassion to
listen;
for the presence of Holy Wisdom to guide healing and
reconciliation in the way of truth;
for the will to walk in justice and right relationship.
Amen
