Together, we can spread awareness about
domestic violence and help those in need.
News from our Executive Director
Mother’s Day is a day this month when people will celebrate moms
everywhere, but for a lot of people this day is very difficult. Many moms will
spend Mother’s Day in our domestic violence shelter. They will not be
brought breakfast in bed or have flowers delivered to them. They will
however take some comfort in knowing that they (and their children) are
finally at peace – free from the violence that they had to escape in their
homes. When I think of a mother, I think of strength. Bringing life into this
world is no small feat and is both precious and miraculous – something
many of us take for granted. Strength is also a word that I use to describe
a survivor of domestic violence. It is no small feat to pick up a phone and
admit to a stranger that you are in desperate need of help. Then to take
that step to enter into the world of the unknown, a domestic violence
shelter, takes courage and strength.
Our volunteers recently had the opportunity and privilege to hear first hand
from one of the moms assisted by our program. Her testimony of strength
and survival for both herself and her children inspired us all to continue the
work we do in our mission to prevent domestic violence. It is not an easy
mission and takes an army of dedicated people to accomplish it.
At Promise Place, we do all that we can to make Mother's Day special for
our moms in shelter with the help of volunteers and the community. This
Mother’s Day please consider giving a donation to Promise Place in honor
of that special mom in your life.
Happy Mother's Day!
Vanessa Wilkins
Executive Director

News from our Legal Advocates
It was a surprise when we received the news from Sara Perdue, Pike/Upson Legal Advocate, that she would be leaving
Promise Place. Although Sara will be greatly missed, we recognize there are many possibilities for her in the future. Sara has
decided to return to school and pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. We wish Sara all the best in her new career!

News from our Volunteer Coordinator
Frieda Dumas began volunteering with Promise Place 5 years ago, and she has been such a
blessing to our organization. Frieda has assisted us with various volunteer roles, from childcare, to
grocery shopping for our clients at the shelter, and helping out with numerous fundraising events
within our community. Frieda was born in Racine, Wisconsin, and made the move to Atlanta in 1986.
She has one daughter who is currently a junior at Mercer University.
When Frieda is not volunteering with Promise Place, she is actively involved with WEN (Women’s
Employee Network) at Delta Air Lines, participating in various community services activities in the
Atlanta area. Frieda also enjoys baking, traveling, and inspirational reading.
We are so thankful to have Frieda as a volunteer with Promise Place. Her grace shines through in
everything that she does to assist our clients and their children.

Child Maltreatment

is a significant public health problem in the United States.
According to Children’s Bureau, more than 681,000 children
are abused annually:
 4 children die every day in the United States from abuse and
neglect.
 1 out of 3 women in prison were abused as children.
 The financial costs for victims and society are substantial. A
recent CDC study showed that the total lifetime estimated
financial cost associated with just 1 year of confirmed cases
of child maltreatment is $124 billion.
 Abused children often suffer physical injuries including cuts,
bruises, burns, broken bones, and even death. Physical
injury is far from the only negative impact of child abuse - it
can also affect broader health outcomes, mental health,
social development, and risk-taking behavior into
adolescence and adulthood.
Child maltreatment includes all types of abuse and neglect of
a child under the age of 18 by a parent or caregiver that
results in harm or potential harm. There are four common
types of abuse:


Physical abuse is the use of physical force, such as
hitting, kicking, shaking, burning, or other shows of
force against a child.
Sexual abuse involves engaging a child in sexual acts.
It includes behaviors such as fondling, penetration,
and exposing a child to other sexual activities.
Emotional abuse refers to behaviors that harm a
child's self-worth or emotional well-being. Examples
include name calling, shaming, rejection, withholding
love, and threatening.
Neglect is the failure to meet a child's basic physical
and emotional needs. These needs include housing,
food, clothing, education, and access to medical care.
What can we in the community do to help or prevent child
abuse? We can promote the development of safe, stable, and
nurturing relationships and environments between children
and their parents or caregivers. Children's experiences are
defined through their environments (such as homes, schools,
and neighborhoods) and relationships with parents, teachers,
and other caregivers. Healthy relationships act as a buffer
against adverse childhood experiences. Become Aware.
