POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Cultural Director, this position is directly involved in the
delivery of evidence-based, strengths-based life skills curriculum that connects youth to
community and culture in order to prevent substance abuse. This position also provides support in
event planning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Responsible for devising a holistic and culturally appropriate approach to prevention of
substance abuse among Tribal youth.
2. Provides an assessment of the needs and resources within the community.
3. Designs and implements curriculum to address substance abuse within the Tribal
community for presentation to Tribal Youth using cultural teachings, practices and
activities.
4. Facilitates substance abuse prevention programs for children, adolescents and adults in the
community.
5. Actively engages community members to be contributors in adapting and implementing
the curriculum.
6. Disseminates alcohol and substance abuse prevention information to community members.
7. Coordinates data collection and prepares written reports and analysis as requested.
8. Provides an evaluation of the impact of the curriculum to the Director, Administrative
Management and Tribal Council.
9. Assists the Director in planning, organizing and implementing various community centered
Gathering of Native American events to serve Tribal youth and adults.
10. Other duties as assigned.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Education and/or Experience
Associates Degree in Human Services or a related field, and four years experience in communitybased substance abuse prevention work, with demonstration of a thorough understanding of Native
American culture, and a holistic approach to wellness as a traditional part of Native American
belief systems is required. Chemical Dependence Professional (CDP) preferred. Must have
knowledge of the cultural practices of the Puyallup Tribe and the Pacific Northwest Native
culture. Must demonstrate ability to design, write and implement curriculum. Experience in
organizing and planning events required. Position requires clerical skills including typing and
personal computer skills using word processing, spreadsheets (i.e., Word for Windows, Excel,
Access, etc.).
Note: Part-time work is prorated in crediting experience (e.g., if you work 20 hours per week for a 12-month period
you will be credited with 6 months of experience).
Language Skills
Effectively conveys and receives ideas, information and directions. Demonstrates good verbal and
written communication. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating
and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write curriculum, routine reports
and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of
organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,
common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and
interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral,
or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in
standardized situations.
Licenses Or Certificates
Must acceptably pass criminal history and background inquiry prior to and periodically throughout
employment.
Must have and maintain a Valid Washington State Driver’s License and proof of insurance.
Driver’s License must not contain restrictions that would otherwise prohibit the employee from
driving a GSA vehicle.

Other Requirements
Must have a minimum of two years documented recovery from substance or chemical dependency
issues; or no prior history/diagnosis of chemical misuse, abuse or dependency.
Knowledge of local, state, federal and private programs resources.
Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals, groups, and communities. Sensitive to and
knowledge of Indian customs, traditions and culture. Attends in-service training as appropriate.
Maintain appropriate and ethical boundaries with community members.
Must be willing to participate in and have knowledge of the Tribe’s annual Canoe Journey.
Uses effective teaching and modeling methods while interacting with community members and
youth.
Successfully works with others to achieve desired results by working and communicating in an
understanding, supportive and flexible way.
Ability to work in a high stress environment.
Commitment to respecting confidential nature of program.
