Rés do Chão (Ground-floor) is an urban rehabilitation and renewal project. Its main goal is the revitalization and stimulation of cities through the reoccupation and rehabilitation of vacant groundfloor spaces. The project began in 2013 and won an award by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation under the FAZ – Ideias de Origem Portuguesa initiative; since 2014, it functions with the support of the BIP-ZIP program of the Lisbon City Hall. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA What issue does it aim to solve? Rés do Chão recognized a persistent issue on Portuguese urban environments: the vacating of commercial ground-floor spaces. This situation has lead to the degradation of buildings and public space, as well as to the abandonment of streets and the loss of street life dynamics. Rés do Chão intends to create a network that comprises the owners of vacant ground-floor spaces, potential tenants and local associations, promoting the occupation of these spaces through models of shared letting agreements and systems of temporary occupation, thereby creating sustainable rehabilitation alternatives. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Where is the project being implemented? Rés do Chão is being implemented in the Misericórdia parish, in Lisbon, an area that encloses a number of streets affected by the closing of shops and the vacating of ground-floor spaces. Since 2014, it has worked on Rua do Poço dos Negros, Rua Poiais de São Bento and Rua de São Bento. Rés do Chão provides 3 autonomous services: Mediation between the owners of vacant ground-floor spaces and the tenants that wish to rent or buy these spaces, taking into account the needs of both parties. Rehabilitation of vacant ground-floor spaces if the owners and tenants which to restore these spaces. Managment and Enhacement of the ground-floor spaces through the promotion of shared letting agreements and systems of temporary occupation, aiming to promote the sustainability and profitability of the use of these spaces, hosting and organizing various events and activities. This space falls within the pilot project of the FAZ - Ideias de Origem Portuguesa contest and has functioned since June 2014. Besides serving as the headquarters of the Rés do Chão project, Rés do Chão 119 is a coworking space that is currently used by various creative business projects. On weekends, Rés do Chão 119 sometimes hosts other events such as conferences, pop-up stores, concerts and dinner parties, among others. It is open to the public every workday between 10 am and 7 pm. On weekends, the space hosts events such as conferences, pop-up stores, concerts and dinners, among others. She graduated in Architecture in Lisbon. During her studies she also lived in Buenos Aires. In the last years she worked as an architect in Lisbon, Quito and São Paulo. The time that she lived in South America was marked by her travels and by the participation in cooperative projects with local communities. Mariana Paisana was born in Lisbon in 1986. She studied at the high school Pedro Nunes and, at the same time, began her training in contemporary dance. She studied architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of Universidade Técnica de Lisboa and, for one year, in Facoltà di architettura in Rome. She worked for three years in Vastu Shilpa Consultants in India. At the moment, she lives and works in Lisbon. Marta Pavão was born in Lisbon in 1986. In 2009 she graduated in Architecture from the FA-UTL, Lisbon. She lived and studied architecture in Barcelona. In the last years, she participated in a project of participatory architecture in Pune, India; an office in Lisbon and later lived and worked in New York and São Paulo. She is currently in Lisbon working autonomously. Sara Brandão was born in Lisbon in 1986. She studied Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of Universidade Técnica de Lisboa and at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. She has worked as an architect in several offices in Portugal, Argentina and Chile, developing in parallel and independently, other projects. She is currently living and working in London. Manuel António Pereira was born in Lisbon in 1983. He studied Anthropology at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Universidade Nova de Lisboa and at the Université Paris Nanterre. In 2009 began his professional activity in cultural marketing and social responsibility in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Since his return to Portugal in 2010 he has collaborated with various organizations, entities, public and/ or private, for his services in territorial marketing, cultural production, social innovation and project management of creative industries and local development.
