the Rockfish Reader May 2015 IN THIS ISSUE From Executive Director Stu Mills: Poor Sara has been pulling her hair out trying to cram all the events, classes and other stuff in this issue into “just” 8 pages. She tells me I need to be very brief in my message this month. Page 2 François Fénelon once said, briefly, “The more you say, the less people remember. The fewer the words, Relay for Life Pageant, Legislative Breakfast, the greater the profit.” My message to you this month is even briefer: NCCO Concert, Wildflower Meadow/Plant Sale, Coffee House Music Buy your Raffle tickets! I try my best to keep Sara happy. Thanks for buying a ticket or two, and for everything else you do. The exhibit will be hung during the first week of June and will remain through June 19. “One of things I love about painting is that the journey always continues. Call it impressionistic or Plein Air, it's a wonder for the soul to feel so close to nature, studying its form, color and space as the eye first takes it in or the mind remembers it.”—Nancy Lauler RVCC Board of Directors President Chuck Kiehl Vice President Elaine Weems Treasurer Bob Kemp Secretary Phil Hearne Directors Gifford Childs, Sarah Jane Stewart, Sue Chase, Bill Perrelli, Bob Yoder, Cheryl Klueh, Cliff Love Sara Taylor Nancy Lauler Nancy Lauler & Bill England Reception and Exhibit Opening: Saturday, June 6, 5:30—7:00pm. In mid-2014, our insurance company handed us a hard choice: either get rid of the skate park, or lose our insurance. After months of searching, we were able to find an insurance provider that would cover the skate park--to the tune of an additional $3000 per year. The skate park is perhaps the best-loved and most-used feature of our recreational facilities, and regularly hosts children and adults alike. And, as Nelson County's only skate park, we feel it is worth keeping—but we need help to shoulder this staggering increase in our insurance premium. Proceeds from this event will go toward that expense, and any funds raised beyond $3000 will be used to maintain and improve the park and RVCC. Saturday, June 27, 5--9pm Food and beverages provided by Devils Backbone Brewing Company, Trager Brothers Coffee, and Cardinal Point Winery Music by Lord Nelson—Shagwuf—Jaguardini—Orme Storm Admission to the event is $5/carload. Click Here to make a donation to Save SK8 Nelson ...or come see us in the office! The Rockfish Reader Page 4 Saturday, July 25: Hoop Dreams! If you’ve been out to RVCC’s outdoor basketball court recently—and more specifically, if you’ve tried to bounce a ball on it—then you know what rough shape the poor court is in. The pavement is warped, unlevel and cracked, grass keeps forcing its way through those cracks, and the court lines are little but a memory. This summer, we’re on a mission to fix all this by installing new safety goals, painting new lines, and resurfacing the paved area in a way that will allow for multi-purpose use. In addition to basketball, the court could support futsal, learning to ride a bike, kickball games, and potentially even a hitting wall for handball or tennis. The Hoop Dreams Festival will be similar to the other Super Saturday events in that it will feature live music, food, beverages, and family-friendly activities, but there’s still lots of planning and brainstorming needed to make sure the basketball court becomes all that it can be. We need help! If you’d like to get involved, please contact Bob West at [email protected], or contact the RVCC Office at 434-361-0100 or [email protected] so we can get you in the loop...and in the hoop! RVCC Welcomes Digital Relab RVCC is pleased to welcome Peter Agelasto IV and Richard Averitt as the newest tenants to join our Community Center. Peter and Richard are setting up office space for their project, Digital Relab, in room 8. So the first question we asked was: what does Digital Relab do? The answer is pretty amazing. From the Digital Relab website: “How many hours every day do you waste looking for pictures, video and other digital files you know you have stored but can't find? We've solved this problem with Starchive ™, the brains for all your digital media, by connecting all your accounts (Dropbox, Facebook, Instagram, email, etc.), automatically Starchiving them visually, and allowing you to share them securely with colleagues and friends. Whether you are a multinational firm with thousands of document collaborators, or a mom keeping track of and sharing family photos and video, we have the solution for you.”—www.digitalrelab.com The Bob Dylan Music Company recently signed a deal with Digital Relab to use Starchive™ to digitally archive 50-plus years of rare music, video, film, documents, photos, and other one-of-a-kind collectible memorabilia. Digital Relab will help BDMC bring order and meaning to the collection through enhanced visualization and a richer metadata experience. “Starchive™ is helping collect and archive the most complete record of Bob Dylan’s history and artistic output in existence,” says Peter. “Think of Starchive™ as the ultimate way for an artist to control what they create. The creative artist has complete control. They can lock it away. They can create a new monetization strategy, or they can deliver it in real-time to their fans via the web or social sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or Vimeo. They have instant access to their full archives and can choose how and with whom they share it.” Peter and Richard are bringing tremendous levels of innovation and enthusiasm to our Center, and we’re very pleased to have them aboard. Treasure Chest News NOW OPEN MONDAYS! The Treasure Chest is now open Mondays! Due to popular demand, the store is now open Mondays from 10—4. As summer draws near, we start turning our sights and dreams to our grounds and recreation fields. We’ve covered some of those plans in the previous pages: the wildflower meadow, the skate park, the basketball court. But summer is the season for baseball, and our baseball field just keeps getting better. We offer huge thanks to the Afton Christian School, who helps us maintain and improve the field in exchange for using it for their youth baseball team; to the Nelson Seadogs Travel Baseball team for their ongoing work and use of the field; and to Jeremy Parker of Creation Appreciation Landscaping for his generous offer to begin leveling the outfield, improving the infield, and providing maintenance for the grass in addition to the work he already does to maintain the RVCC grounds. The Nelson Seadogs are currently seeking a coach. If you are interested in coaching the 15-18 Seadog League, or know of someone who might be interested, please contact [email protected]. This is a community ball field, and we want more of you to take advantage of it. Have you thought about organizing a baseball or softball league? Kickball? Tee-ball? If you’ve got a game, we’ve got the field. Please contact us at 434-361-0100 or [email protected], and let us know how we can help you get your game on.
