On Roles, Relationships and Raffles
If you missed the Annual Meeting last week, you missed a classic example of community in action.
The passion and support of our membership for The Rock was evident from the opening gavel, with
overwhelming approval for a terrific year in 2014 and for our slate of nominees for Board of Directors
seats. We applauded another year of black ink, some significant physical plant and programming improvements, and a full house of vibrant tenants, and we bid a sad but grateful farewell to Director
Sharon Gress while welcoming new Director Cliff Love onto the Board.
Just as we were wrapping up the meeting, though, our ardor for RVCC gave way to another kind of
fervor – call it Pipeline Passion.
You may know that our Board of Directors voted last month to help fund an environmental and economic impact study on the pipeline, as an alternative to a strictly economic impact study commissioned and funded by Dominion in February. Pipeline Passion runs high on our Board, too, with some
urging that we take an advocacy position on the pipeline itself and others arguing that advocacy on
controversial issues isn’t within the purview of our mission. Like at the Annual Meeting, a lot of time
and energy has been spent by the Board on this issue, and it became clear that we did not have a consensus on RVCC’s role as an advocate on the pipeline issue.
Our compromise was agreeing that community education is a cornerstone mission of The Rock, and
that donating a portion of the proceeds from the 50/50 raffle at “Celebrate Rockfish!” to help underwrite a new impact study would provide valuable and needed information to our community. The essence of community is consensus, and the cornerstone of consensus is compromise.
As with any clash of passions, relationships are put at risk. I’m proud of our Board for finding a compromise that provided a measure of satisfaction for all without injury to any, while staying true to our
mission. And I’m confident that our shared passion for RVCC will triumph over any rifts created between us by the pipeline, just as I am confident that our shared passion for the Rockfish Valley will
reunite our community once the issue is settled.
I hope you agree. As for me, I bought raffle ticket # 01.

RVCC's Spring Art Exhibit, open now through mid-April, features the work
of members of the RVCC Art Committee and selected works from the Senior Art Program at JABA in Lovingston.
This exhibit includes photography by Harvey Weiss, vintage signs by Rosemary Weiss, acrylic paintings by Cathy
Kiehl, oil paintings by Beverly Martin, mandalas by Sue
Chase, and Eleanor Amidon's "Buddha Through the Seasons" photography collection.

The 8th Annual Winter Market season comes to a close this Saturday, April
4! Indoor Community Markets feature local produce, meats, cheeses, jams, baked
goods, plants, greenery, art and crafts. The market runs 9:00am—noon on the first
Saturday of the month and coincides with RVCC's Pancake Breakfast and the
Treasure Chest Bag Day.

Friday, April 17: Coffee House Music Series
w/Alex Caton and Dick Harrington
Alex Caton & Dick Harrington play Irish, Oldtime, bluegrass & gypsy
tunes. In singing and in playing fiddle, banjo, and guitar, Alex Caton
has dedicated her musical life to the traditional fiddle music of
Appalachia and Ireland. Dick learned folk songs from his playful Scots-Irish-American
grandma, took up guitar in the 1950s, and has been singing and playing American roots music and
the traditional music of the Southern Appalachians ever since. 7:30pm/$7 cover, in the Rockfish
Lounge.

Coming May 15: The Blazing Saddle Tramps
The Blazing Saddle Tramps play western swing, which is unique for our region. The
“TRAMPS” will fire you up with a bit of country, blend in some tasty jazz, and keep it creative
with some original tunes. So get out your bolo tie, put on your dancing boots, and y’all
come on down. 7:30pm/$7 cover, in the Rockfish Lounge.
Saturday, May 2: Miss Relay for Life Pageant
The Nelson County Miss Relay for Life Pageant will be held at RVCC on Saturday,
May 2. The pageant is open to ages 0—22, and contestants do not have to be
Nelson County residents. Admission is $5, and children under 5 get in free. All
proceeds benefit Nelson County Relay for Life. Doors open at noon; the pageant
begins at 1:00pm.

Saturday, June 27: 1st Annual Save SK8 Nelson Festival
A fundraising event for Nelson's only skate park!
In mid-2014, our insurance company handed us a hard choice: either get rid of the skate park, or lose
our insurance. After months of searching, we were able to find an insurance provider that would cover
the skate park--to the tune of an additional $3000 per year. The skate park is perhaps the best-loved
and most-used feature of our recreational facilities, and regularly hosts children and adults alike. And,
as Nelson County's only skate park, we feel it is worth keeping—but we need help to shoulder this staggering increase in our insurance premium. Proceeds from this event will go toward that expense, and
any funds raised beyond $3000 will be used to maintain and improve the park and RVCC.

Saturday, July 25: Hoop Dreams!
If you’ve been out to RVCC’s outdoor basketball court recently—and more specifically, if
you’ve tried to bounce a ball on it—then you know what rough shape the poor court is in.
The pavement is warped, unlevel and cracked, grass keeps forcing its way through those
cracks, and the court lines are little but a memory.
This summer, we’re on a mission to fix all this by installing new safety goals, painting new
lines, and resurfacing the paved area in a way that will allow for multi-purpose use. In addition to basketball, the court could
support futsal, learning to ride a bike, kickball games, and potentially even a hitting wall for handball or tennis.
The Hoop Dreams Festival will be similar to the other Super Saturday events in that it will feature live music, food, beverages,
and family-friendly activities, but there’s still lots of planning and brainstorming needed to make sure the basketball court becomes all that it can be.

Rockfish Arts Cooperative
We’re pleased to present the Rockfish Arts Cooperative, a program devoted to the development of arts classes at RVCC. These
classes are part of our ongoing mission to expand the cultural and educational programming available at our Community Center.
Over the course of the next few months, we’ll be working to convert Room 12 into a full-time teaching studio for the arts. The
studio will be available for use by both residential and guest instructors, and will offer a wide variety of classes and workshops.
RVCC will also be seeking funding to provide necessary materials and supplies for the studio, and any donation made to RVCC
for that purpose will be tax-deductible.
If you’d like to be involved with this project—whether it’s to teach a class, volunteer your assistance, or make a donation,

Ongoing: Life Drawing Sessions
Tuesdays, 6:30-9pm, in Room 12. Fee: $10/session. Minimum of 6 people required, age 18 & up. These Life Drawing sessions provide a relaxed informal atmosphere and a wonderful way to improve your drawing skills. Figure drawing
has always been the traditional cornerstone of any art training. The human figure offers every challenge – line, shape,
tone, color, perspective and composition. This friendly group welcomes beginners, students & experienced artists to

Saturday, April 25: Portrait Photography Workshop with Stephanie Gross
1:00-5:00, in Room 12. Cost: $80.00. Do you love making pictures of people but are frustrated that they don't always turn out
the way you'd hoped? Spend an afternoon learning to improve your portrait skills.
We will talk about techniques and ways to think about making better people pictures. We will then put those ideas into practice
with immediate guidance and feedback. Working knowledge of your 35mm digital camera is required! A laptop with image processing software is helpful but not necessary. May 6 & 13: Prismatic Painting Class with Alice Murphy
9:30am—12pm, in Room 12. Cost: $12/class suggested donation to RVCC. Creative prismatic
painting on paper or canvas involves the process of designing your own compositions into a kaleidoscope effect and applying your own color schemes. Subject matter will be your choice of still life or
landscape. Degree of difficulty ranges from very simple to as complicated as you desire—all skill levels
can create original work. Alice Murphy has been teaching multi-media art classes since getting her
degree in Fine Arts and Fashion Illustration from RPI (now VCU). In addition to teaching, Alice has
painted a large number of portraits in pencils, pastels, watercolors, acrylics and oils. Students may bring any of the above media
and surfaces. Tables, chairs, and a limited number of standing easels are available. For questions or to register for the class,

Beginning May 7: Estonian Lace Knitting with Marti Naro
Thursdays, May 7, 14 & 21. 6:30—8:00pm, in Room 12. Fee: $60/series, including email support as
needed. This 3-part class will introduce advanced beginning knitters to Estonian knitted lace, its history,
forms and techniques, how to combine lace stitches and how to read a chart. Students will knit a traditional
scarf/shawl, which may or may not be finished within the duration of the class. Support is available as needed
with casting off and blocking after the class ends. Skills required: Advanced beginning knitter and
above. Must know knit, purl, YO and K2tog and basic knitting abbreviations. Knitters should have fair control

Classical Painting Workshop with nationally known artist Frank Covino
A viewing of Frank's instruction from one of his videos will be shown Wednesday, May 6, from 7-8:30pm, in Rockfish University.
One of his students will be present to answer questions, show their work and give detailed information about the workshop.
Workshop dates: Oct 19-23, 9am-6:30pm. Learn to paint like a renaissance master with portrait artist Frank Covino. Over the
course of the week you will learn how to draw with accuracy using an ancient method, how to duplicate anyone's complexion,
undertoning with the Florentine Method of Verdacicio, and using azuraccio undertones in landscapes using the methods of the
Hudson River Valley school. By reproducing a masterpiece of the time, you will learn all these methods and more to create your

Beginning Saturday, May 30: The Poetry of Place—An Experiential Workshop with Amelia Williams
Saturday 5/30, 9—11am; Monday 6/1, 6—8pm; Tuesday 6/2, 6—8pm. In Room 12. Fee: $60/series. How do we respond to
the particulars of place when we write? Is place the geography, the street map, the culture and customs, or the phrases and inflections of a location? Participants will receive two short readings before the first class. The three sessions will provide a mix of
activities focused on the poetry of place, including walks along Mallory Creek, writing outdoors, guided discussion of the readings, in-class journaling and writing with optional prompts, and a typical “reaction and feedback” workshop. New Yoga Classes & Workshops
Beginning April 9: Modern Yoga with Caroline Avant
Thursdays, 10:00 to 11:00am, in the Yoga Room. Cost: $12 drop in or $100 for 10 classes (to be used
within 3 months). For beginners to Intermediate. A very gentle approach for all ages that promotes balance and wellbeing. This class offers a blend of Hatha, Vinyasa Flow and Yin Yoga styles with a strong
emphasis on breath connection, completing with a meditation. Vinyasa Flow means the postures are synchronized with the inhale and exhale into a flowing sequence and Yin yoga is about staying longer in the
pose which reaches the deeper connective tissues, which in turn mobilizes and strengthens the joints. The experience is like a

Tuesday, April 7: Muscle Pain—A German New Medicine Perspective with Christopher Lowthert
7:00pm, in Rockfish University. Suggested Donation: $20, cash at the door. Learn about the emotional origin of musculoskeletal
conditions according to the medical discoveries of Dr. med. Ryke Geerd Hamer and the Five Biological Laws of Nature. We will look
at different areas of the musculoskeletal system and the corresponding emotional conflict theme, i.e., low back pain - “feeling unsupported”; shoulder pain - “loss of self-respect”; knee pain - “unable to perform physical activity”. Strong emphasis on the true
nature of pain and the importance of the “Pain Track” related to chronic pain. A Q&A will follow presentation.

class out, the first one is free! Linda Hobson is a certified instructor for the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program. This program

Beginning April 7: Bellydance Classes with Joy Rayman

in the Belly Dance Collective, for this 8 week course. In this fun filled class, you will learn fundamental movements using proper
