In the Summertime, When the Weather is Fine…
It’s pretty hard to imagine frolicking around the grounds at a party when we’re
under a Winter Storm Warning and facing another four to eight inches of snow,
but that’s where my mind and my heart are today.
I can’t remember having more fun at a meeting here than we had last Tuesday
with the “Save SK8 Nelson” ad hoc committee. This group got off to a rousing
start in the planning of its June 27th “Super Saturday” event, and ideas were flying fast and furious. I have no doubt that this group is going to put on one
heck of a party and raise a ton of money to help pay for the liability insurance and maintenance on the
skate ramp. Keep your eyes right here for more announcements about the event, and if you have a
little time to offer, please join in the planning or volunteer at the event. Games, skating demonstrations, lessons, food, drink and music – you won’t want to miss this family-friendly party. It’s going to
be epic!
Following up on the ramp extravaganza, Saturday July 25th will bring our “Hoop Dreams” party to the
grounds. We’ve already received some significant grant funding for the project, but this event will top
off the cash we need to re-surface and re-stripe the basketball court, install new goals and more, and
this committee is just forming. I know I’ve been approached by at least a half-dozen of our members
who want to bring outdoor hoops back to the Rock, so please give Sara or me a call here at the office
to get in on the planning for another blow-out Super Saturday event!
If you and a bunch of your friends have an idea that you’d like to float for an outdoor event here this
summer, we still have one Super Saturday date open on September 26th and we’d love to help you put
it on and pull it off. Give us a call or drop us a line and we’ll get the event guidelines to you to help
you get started. And in the spirit of “adhocracy” – you’re commitment is to just one event – when the
party’s over, so is the committee!

The 8th Annual Winter Market season continues Saturday, March 7! Indoor
Community Markets feature local produce, meats, cheeses, jams, baked goods,
plants, greenery, art and crafts. The markets run 9:00am-noon on the first Saturday of the month and each market coincides with RVCC's Pancake Breakfast
and the Treasure Chest Bag Day.

at 7 pm at RVCC. This is a very important meeting to discuss the opening of the
regulatory "scoping" period and the FERC scoping meeting scheduled for March
18. Also come to hear news, share information, and ask questions.

Rockfish River Gallery
Sun., 3/15: Nelson Co. Community Orchestra Concert
The Nelson County Community Orchestra, under the direction of Philip
Clark, conductor, will be presenting a FREE Concert on Sunday, March 15 at
3:30 PM. The performance will include works by Purcell, Joplin, Handel,
Timothy and Copland and a Suite from Downton Abbey (PBS Masterpiece
Classics). The Rockfish Presbyterian Church Men’s Choir will be joining the
orchestra for one of the pieces and members of the Nelson County String
Education Program will also be featured.

Jim Lilly & SunnySide perform old-time/traditional roots music that spans the
years from the 1840s to the 1950s, classic country tunes of the 50s and 60s,
and a variety of Gospel tunes. Carol Phillips (autoharp) contributes her love of
the Original Carter Family; Jim Lilly (acoustic guitar) adds the flare of his early
love for old-time mountain music; and Betty Calvert (bass) brings forth her love of the classic country

Sunday, 3/22: Wintergreen Performing Arts presents
The Adaskin String Trio
The Adaskin String Trio has won over audiences internationally
with exuberant and stirring performances. Their playing has been
hailed for “vigor, precision and stylistic certitude” (Charleston Gazette) as well as “spontaneity, intensity and charm” (Peninsula Review) and the Boston Globe praised them for “directing the listener
to the heart of the matter.” Formed in 1994, the trio performs extensively throughout the United States and Canada, and has appeared
at Merkin Concert Hall in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in
Washington DC, and in Boston, Los Angeles, Montreal, Nashville,
Pittsburgh, Santa Barbara and Chicago. In addition, the trio’s concerts have been regularly recorded for broadcast by CBC Radio, Radio-Canada, and National Public Radio.

The Rockfish River Gallery of Fine Art and Exquisite Crafts is now open! The Gallery occupies the room formerly known as the Conference Room, directly across from the front office.
As many of you know, the wonderful Valley Green Gallery closed on November 30th, after 22 years of operation. Those who were members were greatly saddened by this turn of events, as the Gallery was a great addition
to the community. One of the Gallery’s members, Kathy Bonham, decided to open a new gallery here at
RVCC. While the new gallery space is only about a third of the size of the old gallery, it will still be as varied in the
fine arts and crafts it shows as in the old gallery. Nineteen artists have stocked the gallery with paintings, photography, cards,
sculpture, jewelry, pottery, baskets, wood carvings, small hand-made furniture, candles, woven scarves, rugs and hats, glass-work
and more. The majority of the contributing artists were members of the original gallery.

Rockfish Arts Cooperative
We’re pleased to present the Rockfish Arts Cooperative, a program devoted to the development of arts classes at RVCC. These
classes are part of our ongoing mission to expand the cultural and educational programming available at our Community Center.
Over the course of the next few months, we’ll be working to convert Room 12 into a full-time teaching studio for the arts. The
studio will be available for use by both residential and guest instructors, and will offer a wide variety of classes and workshops.
RVCC will also be seeking funding to provide necessary materials and supplies for the studio, and any donation made to RVCC
for that purpose will be tax-deductible.
If you’d like to be involved with this project—whether it’s to teach a class, volunteer your assistance, or make a donation,

Beginning March 2: Life Drawing Sessions
Mondays, March 2—30, 6:30-9pm, in Room 12. Fee: $10/session. Minimum of 6 people required, age 18 & up.
These Life Drawing sessions provide a relaxed informal atmosphere and a wonderful way to improve your drawing
skills. Figure drawing has always been the traditional cornerstone of any art training. The human figure offers every
challenge – line, shape, tone, color, perspective and composition. This friendly group welcomes beginners, students &
experienced artists to join them in an informal workshop setting. No instruction provided. To sign up, please contact

Beginning March 10: Introduction to the Japanese Tea Ceremony with Mikaela Deighan
4 sessions, Tuesday and Thursday evenings March 10, 12, 17 & 19, 6:30-8:00pm, in Room 12. $60/
series. Introduction to the Japanese tea ceremony with emphasis on guest etiquette and the various arts appreciated within the tea ceremony: tea, ceramics, sweets or wagashi, chabana (flower arrangement), calligraphy and
incense. Participants will get a taste of the Chado philosophy and aesthetic that is delightful, mindful, and so applicable to our daily lives. "Tea is the locus of the transcendent and the mundane, unbifurcated." The philosophy
of ichi-go ichi-e—one time one meeting, being present and in the moment—that is honed in tea, is an important
practice to have in our busy and stressful lives. The sessions are based on the four principles of tea: Wa
(Harmony), Kei (Respect), Sei (Purity), and Jaku (Tranquility.)
Week I: Wa - Harmony: Intro (Why do Tea?), Bows (Shin, Gyo, So), Tea Dogu/Tea ware and their uses, Chabana
(bring a vase!), Kei (Respect)—Guest behavior in the tea room and phrases used. Sweets (wagashi): What are they and how do you
eat them? Making bowls of tea.
Week II: Sei (Purity)—Incense, cleanliness and handling of tea dogu; demonstration of Ryakubon (tray tea); Tea and Sweets; Jaku
(Tranquility)—Zen Philosophy: the world through tea eyes; The use of scrolls in the tea room. 2nd demonstration of Ryakubon. Tea and Sweets. For more info and to register, please contact Mikaela Deighan at [email protected].
Classical Painting Workshop with nationally known artist Frank Cavino
A viewing of Frank's instruction from one of his videos will be shown March 11 from 7-8:30pm, in Rockfish University.
One of his students will be present to answer questions, show their work and give detailed information about the workshop.
Workshop dates: Oct 19-23, 9am-6:30pm. Learn to paint like a renaissance master with portrait artist Frank Cavino. Over the
course of the week you will learn how to draw with accuracy using an ancient method, how to duplicate anyone's complexion,
undertoning with the Florentine Method of Verdacicio, and using azuraccio undertones in landscapes using the methods of the
Hudson River Valley school. By reproducing a masterpiece of the time, you will learn all these methods and more to create your

Continuing in March/April: Estonian Lace Knitting with Marti Naro
Thursdays in March/April: Dates TBA. 6:30—8:00pm, in Room 12. Fee: $60/series, including email
support as needed. This 3-part class will introduce advanced beginning knitters to Estonian knitted lace, its
history, forms and techniques, how to combine lace stitches and how to read a chart. Students will knit a
traditional scarf/shawl, which may or may not be finished within the duration of the class. Support is available as needed with casting off and blocking after the class ends. Skills required: Advanced beginning knitter and above. Must know knit, purl, YO and K2tog and basic knitting abbreviations. Knitters should have
fair control of their needles. Space available for up to 6 students. To sign up, and for more info about

March 14 & 21: Handmade Brushes for Artists with Virginia Dawnswir
9am—4pm, March 14 & 21. Room 12. Adults only, please. Series fee: $75. Lunch break 12—1pm—please
bring a bag lunch! Learn how to make beautiful and functional brushes for painting, calligraphy, sumi-e and other
wet media. Students will make several bamboo and deer tail fur brushes over 4 classes. Materials included. Virginia
studied under Susan Nayfield Kahn, master brush maker.

Monday, March 23: Help with Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s or Other Dementia
10:00—11:30am, in Rock U. No Charge. Are you struggling to care for a loved one at home who has Alzheimer’s or other Dementias? This free workshop will provide information about the progressive nature of dementias, the common symptoms and
behaviors associated with these cognitive diseases, as well as practical tips and techniques to help manage these behaviors.
There will also be time for questions and general discussion. Knowledge builds confidence. Come learn, share and become empowered to better manage the challenges of caring for your loved ones. The RVCC Business Council
The RVCC Business Council is a new group designed to inform, link and promote local entrepreneurs. It will also serve as the
voice of the Rockfish Valley business community, and Nelson County merchants at large, in supporting sustainable growth while
advocating for business-conscious ordinances and regulations. Small or large, established or new, your enterprise will benefit
from the quarterly Business Roundtables that will feature seminars on topics critical to your success. In addition to becoming a
