7:30 a.m., August 1, 2015. An 11-mile mass start time trial beginning on Arkansas Street
adjacent to the Registration Area in downtown Rogers, and racing to Avoca and back. The
goal is to beat the A&M train back to downtown Rogers along with a new adversary this year mountain bike racers. Custom jersey to the top male and female finishers. Cyclists who beat
the train win an engraved railroad spike. On-line registration closes at midnight on July 30.
On-site registration for the Race For The Spike will only be on Friday, July 31 from 4:00 –
7:00 pm.
The Algebra: If a bike rider leaves downtown Rogers and travels 5.65 miles north on
Arkansas Street to Avoca, and the A&M train leaves Avoca traveling south at the same time
the bike rider leaves Rogers, what speed will the bike rider need to average to beat the train
back to downtown Rogers if the train takes 34 minutes to complete the trip from Avoca to
Rogers?
Mountain Edition Presented by:
7:30 a.m., August 1, 2015. A course that will start on the Fleming Tract, one of the newer
tracts that expands the Lake Atalanta Park. Racers will cover approximately 6 miles over the
new single track with a joint finish to beat the A&M train and road bike racers. Custom jersey
to the top male and female finishers. Cyclists who beat the train win an engraved railroad
spike. On-line registration closes at midnight on July 30. On-site registration for the Race
For The Spike will only be on Friday, July 31 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm.
There will be various colored ribbons on the trail marking the courses for the mountain bike
events. The R4S – Mountain course will be marked with
flagging.
Please familiarize yourself with the course maps prior to the event. Some sections of the
Lake Atalanta trails are rated as “expert” level of difficulty. You’ll find some sections will
have you make a loop or second pass thru an area; the map will mark those with a “dashed
line”. On the course we’ll have signage at those points.
Also there some areas on the course where the single track passes thru an open area, these
“passing zones” are noted on the maps. Everyone is racing against the clock, so be prepared
to pass or be passed!
Note: there is no vehicle parking allowed at the race starting location on the Fleming Tract.
Participants are encouraged to park in downtown Rogers and ride their bike on the paved trail
through Lake Atalanta Park to get to the starting point. You will need to arrive early enough
to park your vehicle and then ride down to be at the starting point by 7:00 a.m. for a prerace
briefing. There will be volunteers at the Bike Park at the east end of Cherry Street to direct
riders to the trail.

There will be various colored ribbons on the trail marking the courses for the mountain bike
events. The Hot & Hilly Challenge will have a unique color for each leg of the event. 1st leg
will follow
flagging and the 2nd leg will follow
flagging.
Please familiarize yourself with the course maps prior to the event. Some sections of the Lake
Atalanta trails are rated as “expert” level of difficulty. The 1st leg riders will use the maps
marked 1 and the 2nd leg riders will use the maps marked 2. You’ll find some sections will
have you make a loop or second pass thru an area; the map will mark those with a “dashed
line”. On the course we’ll have signage at those points. As an example, Maps 1-C & 2-E show
the “Exchange Zone” & “Finish Line”. Both team members will make a pass through this area
before finishing. The first pass will give you a small window of opportunity to provide
encouragement to your teammate!
Also, there are some areas on the course where the single track passes thru an open area.
These “passing zones” are noted on the maps. When the opportunity arises, be prepared to
pass or be passed!
Exchange Zone rules – there will be an area that has a “finishing chute” for the 1st leg riders
to ride through to complete their section. Adjoining the “finishing chute” there will be a
staging area with the 2nd leg riders lined up side by side. There will not be any physical hand
off or exchange. Once the 1st leg crosses the “line”, the 2nd leg can start their section.
For the finish, the 2nd leg rider will make a pass through the Exchange Zone area, and on the
2nd pass they’ll ride through the “finishing chute” to complete the inaugural Hot & Hill
Mountain Bike Challenge!
Note: there is no vehicle parking allowed at the race starting location on the Fleming Tract.
Participants are encouraged to park in downtown Rogers. 1st leg team members should ride
their bike on the paved trail through Lake Atalanta Park to get to the starting point. You will
need to arrive early enough to park your vehicle and then ride down to be at the starting
point 30 minutes prior to the start time for your category (Sport or Novice) for a prerace

time for your category for a prerace briefing. There will be volunteers at the Bike Park at the

Our Causes and Use of Proceeds
Proceeds from the Race for the Spike and Frisco 5 Poker Ride over the three previous years
have been dedicated to supporting the Rogers Community Bike Program. In the spring of
2014, NWA Emerging Leaders used proceeds from these events to purchase 25 new bikes that
were placed at trailheads in Rogers for free public use.
This year, our hope is to significantly expand the fundraising efforts so that we may support
the Rogers Community Bike Program in a greater way and also support other related efforts to
improve cycling and overall wellness in Northwest Arkansas. We intend to support Pedal It
Forward with a share of this year’s proceeds (http://www.pedalitforwardnwa.com/). Pedal
It Forward is a non-profit organization that takes donated old, used bikes, tunes them up and
provides them to NWA children in need. We will also provide contributions to the Ozark Off
Road Cyclists and the Boston Mountain Cyclists clubs in recognition of their volunteers who
will help organize and run portions of the festival.
NWA Emerging Leaders (http://www.nwaemergingleaders.com/) is a program of the RogersLowell Area Chamber of Commerce. The Emerging Leaders Greenways & Trails workgroup
links parks, trails and people; to provide, protect, develop and maintain parks, greenways and
trails throughout the community; and to promote public awareness of the benefits of green
space. All festival funds are kept and managed by the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of
Commerce and are included in the chamber’s annual audit.
All proceeds will go to great cycling causes! Thanks for participating!
