The wind and cold temperatures did not deter the Reagan Robotics team from the State Championship on February 20 and 21. Eleven students comprised the three teams that qualified for states. These students have been working together since late September designing, building, programming, and driving a robot that performs a multitude of tasks. Student members of the Reagan Metallic Mustangs from team 6568A include eighth graders Joe DeBardi, Luke Toureau, Declan Ring, Iain Mischel, Isaac Mardo and seventh grader Robert Banwarth. Team 6568B includes eighth graders Gannon Sudweeks, Aiden Lee, seventh graders Ethan Saulsbury, Pushp Patel, Matthew Reheuser, and sixth grader Jake Craig. Team 6568G is an eighth grade Project Lead the Way team which incorporates robotics into the curriculum. This team includes Titus Okine, Henry Perry and Nikhil Gambhir. Team coaches are CTE teachers, Denise Reheuser, Tim Post, and Deb Wolfe. This year’s challenge, titled “Skyrise,” was divided into qualifying rounds, team alliance selection rounds, and elimination rounds in which teams maneuver their robots in a 12-foot by 12-foot square field. Teams work together in alliances to attain higher scores than their opponent alliance by programming their robot to build a 6-foot-tall vertical tower. Concussion Training 7 Team 6568B placed 9th overall in the elimination rounds and advanced to the quarter finals on February 21. They showed dedication, devotion and team work but fell short as they were defeated by the number one seed alliance. The school division is also working on an enhanced Translation Services webpage that will allow families to complete a questionnaire and request assistance in their own language. At every school there will be a visible poster that will allow families to select a language when they are in need of assistance in their language. Schools will also have interpretation services available. Currently, the school division website has an enhanced Google Translate feature that provides instant translation assistance in dozens of languages. Note that computer generated translations has its limitations, but this feature moves us forward in serving the needs of our students in an increasingly diverse community. Please feel free to contact the school if you are in need of assistance in another language. 2015 Concussion Education Presentations As of July 1, 2011, Prince William County School Board's concussion policy went into effect requiring student and parent participation in concussion training before the student may participate in the season. In order to participate in any extracurricular athletic activity, each student-athlete and the student-athlete's parent or guardian shall attend, on an annual basis (every 12 months), concussion training provided by the School Division. After having reviewed materials describing the short- and long-term health effects of concussions, each student-athlete and the student-athlete’s parent or guardian shall sign a statement acknowledging attendance in concussion training and understanding of such information. (Refer to PWCS Regulation 759-1) Sessions have been scheduled for Reagan Middle School students for Wednesday, March 18 at 6 p.m. Participants must be on time. All face-to-face concussion training sessions will be held in the school gym. Online Concussion Training Parents of students who have previously participated in a Prince William County middle school face-to-face concussion training session are eligible to complete this year's training requirement online with their student(s) at http://healthpe.departments.pwcs.edu/modules/cms/pages.phtml?pageid=272414. This web-based training will be available in English and Spanish. Page 8 Student Accident Insurance is available online at http://markel.sevencorners.com/, or call Customer Service at 1-877-444-5014. See some quick tips below or visit the website at http://www.eatright.org/NNM/ 20 Ways to Enjoy More Fruits and Vegetables Building a healthy plate is easy when you make half your plate fruits and vegetables. It’s also a great way to add color, flavor and texture plus vitamins, minerals and fiber. All this is packed in fruits and vegetables that are low in calories and fat. Make 2 cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of vegetables your daily goal. Try the following tips to enjoy more fruits and vegetables every day. 1. Variety abounds when using vegetables as pizza topping. Try broccoli, spinach, green peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms and zucchini. 2. Mix up a breakfast smoothie made with low-fat milk, frozen strawberries and a banana. 3. Make a veggie wrap with roasted vegetables and low-fat cheese rolled in a whole-wheat tortilla. 4. Try crunchy vegetables instead of chips with your favorite low-fat salad dressing for dipping. 5. Grill colorful vegetable kabobs packed with tomatoes, green and red peppers, mushrooms and onions. 6. Add color to salads with baby carrots, grape tomatoes, spinach leaves or mandarin oranges.* 7. Keep cut vegetables handy for mid-afternoon snacks, side dishes, lunch box additions or a quick nibble while waiting for dinner. Ready-to-eat favorites: red, green or yellow peppers, broccoli or cauliflower florets, carrots, celery sticks, cucumbers, snap peas or whole radishes. 8. Place colorful fruit where everyone can easily grab something for a snack-on-the-run. Keep a bowl of fresh, just ripe whole fruit in the center of your kitchen or dining table. 9. Get saucy with fruit. Puree apples, berries, peaches or pears in a blender for a thick, sweet sauce on grilled or broiled seafood or poultry, or on pancakes, French toast or waffles. 10. Stuff an omelet with vegetables. Turn any omelet into a hearty meal with broccoli, squash, carrots, peppers, tomatoes or onions with low-fat sharp cheddar cheese. 11. “Sandwich” in fruits and vegetables. Add pizzazz to sandwiches with sliced pineapple, apple, peppers, cucumber and tomato as fillings. 12. Wake up to fruit. Make a habit of adding fruit to your morning oatmeal, ready-to-eat cereal, yogurt or toaster waffle. 13. Top a baked potato with beans and salsa or broccoli and low-fat cheese. 14. Microwave a cup of vegetable soup as a snack or with a sandwich for lunch. Page 13 Clinic News 14. Microwave a cup of vegetable soup as a snack or with a sandwich for lunch. 15. Add grated, shredded or chopped vegetables such as zucchini, spinach and carrots to lasagna, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, pasta sauce and rice dishes. 16. Make fruit your dessert: Slice a banana lengthwise and top with a scoop of low-fat frozen yogurt. Sprinkle with a tablespoon of chopped nuts. 17. Stock your freezer with frozen vegetables to steam or stir-fry for a quick side dish. 18. Make your main dish a salad of dark, leafy greens and other colorful vegetables. Add chickpeas or edamame (fresh soybeans). Top with low-fat dressing.* 19. Fruit on the grill: Make kabobs with pineapple, peaches and banana. Grill on low heat until fruit is hot and slightly golden. 20. Dip: Whole wheat pita wedges in hummus, baked tortilla chips in salsa, strawberries or apple slices in low-fat yogurt, or graham crackers in applesauce. *See “Color Your Plate with Salad” at www.eatright.org/nutritiontipsheets for more tips on creating healthy salads PTO News 2015 has certainly offered a cold, snowy start. Our school is working hard to minimize the risk. As needed, special cafeteria areas may be reserved for the exclusive use of those whose meals are free of specific allergy inducing products. If appropriate, you will receive a notice alerting you to specific food allergy concerns of a student in your child’s class; it will specify products that should not be brought into the classroom—please follow it carefully. PWCS complies with a new Virginia law requiring all schools to have epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPens) and staff trained to administer the life-saving drug to students in emergencies. This is a last resort for unforeseen reactions. Students with known food allergies should continue to have their own EpiPens, along with complete emergency health plans on file with the school nurse.
