Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West Inc. Westport Bowling Club, Buller Street, Port Macquarie Tuesdays 6.00pm for 6.30pm Rotary Report from the 31st March & Notices for the 7th April 2015 Volume 46 No. 36 Chartered 26th April 1971 by the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Website: www.rotarypmwest.org.au PO Box 330, Port Macquarie NSW 2444 Apologies for meetings please call Barry Bird (02) 65826633 Presidents Thoughts Another very long talk this week reminded me that I meant to remind members who are introducing guest speakers that they have only 20 minutes for their talk. While both the last two speakers were very interesting they went over the same thing several times and too twice the time we usually allow. If we have a very interesting topic and questions go for a while that is OK as it means members are interested. However if the speaker is 50% over time there is no time for questions. The Sargent brought up the question of dress at meetings again this week. We do not enforce coat & tie at West Port except on special nights. However casual dress does not include shorts & a Tee shirt. Members should dress as they would if going out to a good restaurant with a partner or good friend. It’s not hard to wear a shirt with a collar even on the hottest days, and we look like the professional group we purport to be. Remember the public see us coming and going and they are the ones we will be looking to raise money from each year. Guest Speaker – Tony Dawson – History on the School of Arts School of Arts was originally identified as the transfer of useful knowledge. Increase education to increase productivity. Anything that required practical skill was able to be learnt at the School of Arts. Burbeck College in London ran the first course at Edinborough University and his first course attracted 500 participants. The first School of the Arts in Australia started in Tasmania in 1827. Sydney 1833 started their first School which was a Mechanics Institute. Richard Burke was the Governor and Patron of the School. 1890 there were over 2000 sprinkled over Australia. The government offered a subsidy for both buildings and running costs at the time, so people were encouraged to start a school and share their knowledge. 1840, PMCQ tried to start a School of the Arts with a focus on a Literary Association. With the Economic depression, it didn’t take off the ground. 1856 again PMCQ had another crack at it and started it as a School of Arts. It was successful for 5-‐6 years running lectures and debates. 1982 it really took off. It started in the same month as the PMCQ News. In the first edition, it was mentioned that the School of Arts was proposed. This was started by the Anglican Minister, George Litfield, Angus McKinnon (School Headmaster), and a few other leaders of the community. Later they were granted a piece of land to build a premises which is where the Glasshouse now sits. This comprised a hall and library. Sydney Library would often send up books for the PMCQ Library. Edmund Barton also led a political gathering in the complex leading up to Federation. During the First World War, many concerts where held there to raise morale and money for our local troops overseas. 1918 – the School of the Arts was burnt down. It was the 6th fire within the local area that year. They lost everything. It was apparently an arson attack but no one was ever charged. They later rebuilt in 1920 on the same premises which was only a 2 room building. This was a library and a reading room. 1951 the premises was transferred to the Hastings County Council and was able to obtain government grants to assist with the adoption of a formal library as the existing library was on a loan basis from Sydney Library where books would be rotated on a monthly basis.
