Bellway Homes apply for former Lower Hillmorton College Site
A developer has now come forward with detailed plans and is proposing 131
new homes along with an Extra Care Learning Disabilty residential unit. The
proposed development does largely reflect the original Outline Permission.
The current application largely deals with landscaping, issues like surface
water run off, trees, building materials and environmental impact.
We shall be seeking to make sure that Highway matters along with tree
preservation are dealt with. After some years of dereliction it is about time
we had a good quality scheme for the area.
Retirement housing scheme gets go ahead at Herbert Grey College.
The former Herbert Grey College site off Little Church Street has gained
planning permission for 73 retirement flats and community facilities. This will
mean the loss of St Andrews Church House which
English Heritage declined to list but we will see Herbert
Grey College retained and the untidy extensions
removed. Marjorie Hume House will reappear from the
shadows behind the fence to become a main focal
point of the development.
No green fields or agricultural land will be lost as a consequence of these developments.
Flooding on Whitehall Road Roundabout averted
Following concerns raised by residents regarding aqua-planing created by
traffic from trapped surface water at Whitehall Roundabout , your local
Councillors contacted Warwickshire County Highways department to get
storm drains unblocked and Rugby Borough Council to remove surface leaf
fall .
“We hope this will stop any significant flooding at this very busy roundabout”,
said Cllr Neil Sandison . We have also asked RBC to remove excess leaves
from the junction of Caldecott Street and Hillmorton Road by the traffic lights and Lower Hillmorton Road
by the former College site. We are advised they are on the list.
Resurfacing works
Resurfacing works have now been completed on parts of Clifton Road ,
Church Street and North Street removing many of the pot holes and
damaged surfaces which we raised with the County Council on your behalf.
Work has also been carried out on Lower Hillmorton Road as far as St Peters
Road and Slade Road but works still need to be done to modify the humps
between Eastland’s Road and Boundary Road. We will keep you posted as
we press to get additional roads and streets into future programmes.
Travellers
Travellers have kept Council Officers and your Ward Councillors very busy this last month. The invasion
started in Whitehall Recreation Ground, moved to Whinfield Recreation Ground and then finished up with
an assault on an elderly resident on GEC Sports field. There was a trail of litter and abandoned items left
after they moved on. We congratulate our Works Service and Open Space team for getting these areas
back into good order so promptly.
Barby Road speeding and Inconsiderate parking
We are receiving increasing complaints from residents concerning speeding along
Barby Road leading to near misses at the crossing. We also have concerns
regarding the safety of horses and riders who frequently use this route for
exercising.
Inconsiderate parking
A secondary problem has been parking on the grass
verges opposite the Hospital of St Cross which is unlit
this is not only dangerous in terms of Highway safety
it is causing severe damage to the verge. We believe
the problem has occurred since the Hospital Trust increased parking fees.
Cllr Neil Sandison says “We have raised this directly with the trust at a
meeting in Rugby . We are also raising it with the County Council and the
Police as a safety issue.

Some health walking schemes already exist in the
Rugby but none start in and around this area.

‘Works 4 Me’ has taken over a shop at 38 High Street, Rugby (opposite M&S). They
are an enterprising new Day Care Centre for adults with learning difficulties. If you
attended special school or college you may be interested in the group? They are a
small group working together to access local amenities with work as their central
theme. Clients will be responsible for sourcing, buying and up-cycling goods to sell
