BEFORE YOU START Welcome to the 2nd Run Sunshine Coast presented by the University of the Sunshine Coast! Thank you for getting involved and making a difference to children’s health in your community. Run Australia in collaboration with Wishlist have set out to fund the growth of the Child Development Service on the Sunshine Coast. Firstly thanks to all that took part in Run Sunshine Coast 2014. Earlier in the year we were pleased to announce that thanks to your registration fee from the inaugural Run Sunshine Coast Wishlist has already relocated the Child Development Service and enabled it to grow substantially to now be working with early school aged children with behavioral and developmental issues, for the very first time. For those who are joining us for the first time, thank you and welcome! Your participation is directly impacting on many local families who would otherwise need to seek assistance from private specialists for this service. That is something to feel very proud of! The new and improved Service also treats children aged 8 to 13 where possible but we need your support to ensure this service continues to grow and remains in it's temporary relocation until it moves into Caloundra Hospital in 2017.We’ll be keeping you updated on the growth of the Child Development Service over the next few years. By taking part in this unique community event you are truly making a difference to local families. We cannot wait to show you the results of your efforts, which will benefit the entire Sunshine Coast. Happy running, walking or rolling... As a Sunshine Coast local I really wanted to connect with an event that truly gave back to the community, and this was the perfect opportunity. Something for all levels, all ages and for a great cause. Make sure you join me on 17th May and help bring some extra vitality to our very own Sunshine Coast! PETE JACOBS 2012 IRONMAN TRIATHLETE WORLD CHAMPION It’s my first year as a Run Sunshine Coast ambassador and I’m so honoured to join the team. 10 TED 2015 CHILD AMBASSADOR Ted was diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis in April 2014 following an MRI scan. Tuberous sclerosis is a genetic disease that causes benign tumours to grow in the brain and on other vital organs such as the kidneys, heart, eyes, lungs, and skin. It usually affects the central nervous system and results in a combination of symptoms including seizures, developmental delay, behavioural problems, skin abnormalities, and kidney disease. Ted has several abnormal areas on his brain but even though these are present to date gratefully, he has had no seizes. He has white marks on his skin and a red rash like looking mark on his face. Ted’s kidney’s have been scanned and are clear, Ted still to have lots more tests carried, and this will go on for the rest of his life. have on Ted, his future, and our family as a whole. Once we got settled on the Sunshine Coast we found a family Doctor at Caloundra Bulk Billing, the doctor there Dr Legget referred Ted to Dr Tom Hurley at Nambour Hospital. In the meantime Ted was attending Bambini at Meridan two days a week where we meet a great lady called Kerry Cook. Both Kerry and Dr Tom Hurley referred Ted to the Child Development Service here on the Sunshine Coast and for this we are forever grateful. The service and level of support we have received from the fantastic team at the Maroochydore centre is amazing, we have laughed and cried together, they have provided us with access to services within the centre to help us determine what Ted needs to ensure he has a better future, and begun to teach him skills he requires for getting ready for school, holding a pen, putting his own shoes on, all of which Ted currently has some difficulty with. They have provided us with a greater understanding about Ted’s disease and have truly had a large impact on our family. And to think all of this was available to use through one simple referral from our Doctor. We would surely recommend this service to anyone; it truly is second to none. We were told the results of Ted’s scan the day our family were immigrating to Australia, gob smacked by the news, we still didn’t really understanding this disease very well and were extremely unaware of the huge impact it would BE SURE TO TAG US ON INSTAGRAM #RUNSUNSHINECOAST #RUNAUSTRALIA of every registration fee goes to children’s health-related projects in rural communities.
