Hands Off Halls Creek - Noosa Parks Association

FRIDAY ENVIRONMENT FORUM
NPA Environment Centre
13 February 2015
Hands Off Halls Creek
This week at Friday Environment Forum Halls Creek runs through, and gives its name to a
1400 hectare parcel of land situated south west of Caloundra and to the east of the Bruce
Highway.
This land is adjacent to the Pumicestone Passage which is
listed as an internationally significant wetland and is part of the
RAMSAR listed Moreton Bay Marine Park. Both Caloundra
and Sunshine Coast Councils have considered the possibility of
development at Halls Creek for 15 years and consistently
rejected it for environmental and planning reasons. It was
intended that this former pine plantation site would be
revegetated to provide an inter-urban break between the
Moreton and Sunshine Coast Regional Council areas, thereby
protecting the environmental, recreational and fishery values of
the Pumicestone Passage. Now, the State Government is
insisting that this area be designated as a growth area in the
South East Queensland Regional Plan.

Weibe ter Bals, Executive Officer of Sunshine Coast Environment Council will discuss what’s
at stake if the development at Halls Creek goes ahead when he is the guest speaker at Noosa
Parks Association’s Friday Environment Forum on February 13. He says, “The debate about
Halls Creek raises major questions around population growth, density and urban form on the
Sunshine Coast. It also cuts to the very heart of our ability as a community to shape our own
future and protect the values and landscapes that make the Sunshine Coast unique.”
Join the audience at NPA’s Environment Centre,
Wallace Drive, Noosaville to hear Weibe ter Bals
explain the history of Halls Creek, as well as the
environmental and other impacts should there be
future development of this site. Coffee and a
friendly chat are on offer from 10am with the
Forum commencing at 10.30am. Keen bird
observers are welcome to join Valda in the car
park at 8.30am for an Interpretive Birding stroll
through
Wallace
Parklands.
