Dear 8th Grade Students and Parents,
Our 8th grade promotion is just one month away! Today, we reviewed expectations and
guidelines for this important event with your student. Please take a moment to read this
information and contact me if you have any questions.
Academics:
•The Vail School District has high expectations for student achievement. These
expectations are documented in the attached “Raising Expectations” Policy. Our
promotion/retention practices are based upon the Raising Expectations policy.
•Students must have all of their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Quarter remediation hours served in order
to participate in any promotion activities. Any hours owed for 4th Quarter due to excessive
absences (9+ in a semester), must be completed during summer school in order to be
promoted to 9th grade.
•Students must pass all of their 4th Quarter classes to be eligible for promotion activities,
including the 8th grade dance. An “F” in any class during the 4th quarter will prevent a
student from being able to participate in any promotion activities. Students will also be
required to attend Summer School in order to promote to high school.
•Please review your child’s grades and attendance on PowerSchool or on their weekly
PASS pages to keep informed of his/her academic progress.
Personal Responsibility and Student Conduct
Students are expected to be respectful and appropriate towards all other students and adults
on campus at all times. As of today, April 21, 2015 -- any student receiving an out of
school suspension OR serving more than 2 days of in-school suspension, will be
excluded from all promotion activities.
Promotion Practice
RVMS students will rehearse for the promotion ceremony on Weds., May 20. Rehearsal
begins after the 8th Grade Breakfast and generally lasts for the rest of the day. Students
must participate in rehearsal in order to participate in our promotion ceremony.
8th Grade Dance and Promotion Dress Code
These are fun and special celebrations!
• Boys usually wear slacks and dress shirts or collared polos.
• Girls usually wear dresses or dress slacks with blouses. The RVMS Dress Code is still in
effect for the ceremony, however, students may wear spaghetti-strap tops/dresses. This is
the only exception to the RVMS Dress Code for this event.
• Students will be standing and walking a lot -- please consider this when choosing shoes.
• We highly encourage students being modest and comfortable with their dress wear.
• I encourage you to ask if you have questions. I am happy to look at a photo of an outfit
and answer questions before you make a purchase. Feel free to email me at
[email protected] or bring your outfit to school for approval.
• Administration has final determination regarding the appropriateness of student wear
and may require a student to find a cover-up or change altogether an outfit that is not
appropriate for this ceremony.
Promotion Ceremony Information:
The promotion ceremony begins promptly at 10:30am. We are asking families to limit their
number of guests to four (4) people per student. If our audience capacity exceeds the
number allowed under the fire code, overflow will be set-up in the MPR and guests will
view the ceremony as it is streamed on-line. High school and middle school students may
only attend if they are accompanied by an adult.
