Ascension of the Lord, Year B May 17, 2015 with their hands and drinking deadly poison. These are not to be taken literally. The Middle Eastern way of writing uses what is called a hyperbole—an exaggeration—which is an accepted way of making a point: that many difficult and even seemingly impossible things as well as evils will be overcome by the apostles through the power of the Holy Spirit. The divine commissioning that Jesus charges to his apostles entails within it a challenge for people of all times and places either to believe (and thereby accept) or to reject the Gospel: “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16). Here belief in Christ and its consequent acceptance of baptism is equated with salvation; meanwhile disbelief in Christ brings condemnation. Today in our own times, 2015 years since the Gospel was first proclaimed, unbelief comes from many factors, one of which is the poor witnessing by those disciples of Jesus who claim to believe in him. The Ascension of the Lord Jesus means his liberation from all restrictions of time and space (place). For us, the feast signifies man’s deepest yearnings for the infinite and that sighing of all creation towards a final end, which is identified as “God.” This is what St. Augustine said: “You have created us, O Lord, and our hearts are restless till they find rest in you.” It is only in God that the creature should feel totally at home within itself: only God is the end all for man. It is only God who can fill the void of the human heart. The reading from the Acts of the Apostles (First Reading: Acts 1:1-11) describes the Ascension of the Lord Jesus. It demonstrates how Jesus, after his Resurrection, is now in the glorious presence of his Father. As we profess in the Creed every Sunday, “he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.” It will be by the power of the Holy Spirit and through his followers that Jesus continues to bring down his saving deeds to the world: “...you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses...to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). In the Second Reading (Eph. 1:17-23) this Holy Spirit that the Lord Jesus promised to his followers is a “Spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him” (Eph. 1:17). It will always be the Spirit who will enlighten the eyes of our hearts, so that we “may know what is the hope that belongs to the call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance…, and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe” (Eph. 1:18). The Gospel (Mark 16: 15-20) deals with the Lord Jesus’ Ascension and the missionary charge he gave to his apostles. Note here that the Lord Jesus charges the apostles—therefore the whole church at large—with the essential task of the proclamation of the Good News: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). On a contemporary note, today Pope Francis wants Catholics to “get out of the sacristy and into the streets.” He wants the Church not to just sit around waiting for people to come and walk through the door, but to go out to meet them where they are. “The Church is called upon to go out of itself and to go to the periphery, which is not only geographical, but also existential: where there is sin, pain, injustice, and religious indifference, where there is human misery.” Note that in this Gospel passage there are some references to gross actions such as picking up serpents Fr. You can’t do that yourself. You have to have a priest and the liturgy and all the stuff you can only get in the Church. That’s why it’s not good enough to say you can stay home and pray and love Jesus by reading the Bible, and that’s why Catholics think it’s a sin not to go to the Church because Jesus is there in His Body and Blood and why would you stay away if He is there waiting for you? Not to go to the Church is not to meet Jesus — on purpose.” ~Author unknown Sacramental Preparation Congratulations to: Interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith? Or in becoming Catholic?
