Veronica Kuehn Office Manager St. Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two FROM THE PASTOR FR. JIM BAHASH Humor me on this one, would you? The other day I watched the reboot of the DC Comics hero Superman. The 2013 movie was named “Man of Steel”. Most of you know the story. Superman, whose private identity is Clark Kent, was actually born on another planet called Krypton. His parents saw a coming cataclysm and decided to send him to earth in a space ship when he was just an infant. Luckily, for him and for us, he arrived safely and was adopted by good and wholesome people. As a bonus, the earth’s proximity to our young sun gives him super powers which he uses for the good of humanity. Yay! In the movie however there are other survivors from his home planet who are not nice people and they want him badly. They come to earth and demand he be turned over to them or else they’ll destroy the earth. Not wanting earth’s destruction Superman turns himself over to humanity to decide his fate. We (humans) decide to hand him over to the bad guys to save ourselves. The scene is set. Generals and colonels, surrounded by soldiers in full combat gear, who in turn are surrounded by tanks and helicopters, are gathered to hand Superman over to the evil aliens from Krypton. When the bad guys come for Superman they are not content to take him alone. They want one of us too, Lois Lane the reporter who knows Superman’s real identity. In an act of bravery, one of the colonels tells the Kryptonian soldier who has come to collect Superman that she can’t have Lois Lane. She’d have to fight to get Lois. Lois, you see, is one of us and we’ll fight to protect our own. Finally, some bravery! I’ll let you watch the movie to find out the rest but, golly, we could use that kind of bravery in our Church today. How often do we surrender loved ones, spouses, children, neighbors, and others to the World and the Evil One when they come calling? People around us stop practicing their faith, live lives of sin and we let them go without a word. Or, as parents we teach our children that faith isn’t important because we don’t bring them to Mass or Confession. In a sense, we surrender them to the enemy when we do this. It is time for us to start fighting to keep one another safe. Time to tell the world and the devil that we won’t surrender our family and friends without a fight. Our weapons are not earthly ones, but heavenly. Listen to St. Paul in his letter to the Ephesians chapter six: Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Perhaps today is the day to have that talk about living the Catholic Faith with those around who have gotten a little weak in its practice. Pastoral Letter of Marriage April 19: Marriage: Love and Life In The Divine Plan: Unitive and Procreative “Conjugal love expresses the unitive meaning of marriage in such a way as to show how this meaning is ordered toward the equally obvious procreative meaning. The unitive meaning is distorted if the procreative meaning is deliberately disavowed…Likewise, the procreative meaning of mar- riage is degraded without the unitive.” To read the document go to http://www.usccb.org/loveandlife/.
