Col. Chris Kemper is the nephew of St. Mark’s parishioner, John Kemper, and a 4th generation military officer in his family. His great-grandfather served under Admiral George Dewey in the US Navy in 1888. Deployed on his 5th tour of duty in Afghanistan last January, this Kemper has spent many months away from his young family. When he returned safely in September on his birthday, he delivered an American flag to his daughters’ school. Unaware that their dad had come home, his two daughters, who are 5 and 8, were asked to raise the flag at their school that day. While students sang the National Anthem, the girls raised the flag, then out came their dad for a joyous reunion. His wife, Molly, told news reporters, “It’s amazing to have that family connection. It was important we share this. He’s doing this for the country, and that’s what we do.” Speaking of family ties, John’s cousin was the late Fr. Benedict Groeschel. John’s father was in car sales when Fr. Benedict received Rome’s approval to start a new order, the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. Fr. Benedict needed a sturdy, rugged truck for the mission. His requirements were non-negotiable. It had to be a practical vehicle that would not draw attention. Finding one seemed an impossible task, yet Fr. Benedict was unfazed, “Don’t worry. It will show up!” Unaware of the conversation, one of the dealership’s office workers approached John’s father the next day with an unusual request. Her father had died and she needed to sell his truck. It was a bit beaten up but ran well. She asked if John’s father could help her. Of course, it matched the description of Fr. Benedict’s request to a T! When the truck was delivered to him, even the monk expressed his surprise, “That didn’t take you very long!” Jack Geiger served in the Philippines during World War 2. The war had ended in Europe but the baƩle conƟnued in the Pacific. Jack’s mother wrote to him that she wanted him home for Christmas. Sadly, she told him that his sister, Ruth, had said it was impossible. Troops who had been staƟoned in Europe were being redeployed to the Pacific theater. Ruth recommended to their mom to pray a novena. She explained that if she made her prayerful request in the state of grace, God might answer her prayer. That very day, Jack’s mother began a novena and prayed that her young son be home by Christmas. She later wrote to Jack on the warfront to tell him what she had done. He sƟll has the leƩer! In mid-October, 1945, Jack found himself on a troop ship headed to San Francisco. Upon arrival a few weeks later, the group was transferred to an army camp in California to await their new orders. When a troop train arrived, the soldiers were instructed to get onboard to return to their base camps. AŌer making another train connecƟon to cross the country, Jack arrived at Ft. Monmouth in the late aŌernoon of Christmas Eve. There he was assigned a bunk in the barracks and told to stay overnight because he would be honorably discharged the following day. But Jack had a final mission to accomplish. He walked out to the front gate of the fort. A few cars drove past him before someone stopped, “Where you heading, soldier?” “East Orange, sir.” “That’s not where I’m headed but I’m going to take you anyway. Jump in!” About an hour later, he rang the doorbell at his mother’s home. The impossible had happened. Her son was home by Christmas! St. Mark’s has been praying for Lt. Col. Kemper and we are thankful to God for his safe return. On this Veteran’s Day, we would like to ask you to continue to pray for those still on our list on page 4. Msgr. Sean Flynn is pleased to announce that Bishop O’Connell has assigned Deacon Michael Keary, formerly from the Archdiocese of Newark, to St. Mark’s. Deacon Keary and his wife now reside in Spring Lake Heights. Please join the pastor in welcoming him to the parish! The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12 Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing. Psalm 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9 God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress. 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17 If any one destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and that temple you are. John 2:13-22 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all, with the sheep and oxen, out of the temple; and he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. What’s Inside? Who knew? This month, we pray for the souls in Purgatory. I heard that they pray for us, but cannot pray for themselves. Purgatory is a place where our souls prepare for the presence of God. When we think of it that way, it’s an OK thing, because who wants to stand in front of Jesus looking less than sparkling? This month we celebrate St. Martin de Porres, St. Charles Borromeo, St. Leo the Great, St. Mother Cabrini, St. Elizabeth of Hungary and St. Martin of Tours to name a few. I received my first Holy Communion and Confirmation at St. Martin of Tours in Brooklyn. I love the story in the Magnificat: Sulpicius Severtis (425 A.D.) records an account of Martin’s compassion that has become iconographic of St. Martin. He tells that on a very cold winter day Martin met a beggar who was shivering in the cold. No one had any compassion for the poor man, except St. Martin. At the time all Martin had was the clothes on his back and his sword. He used his sword to cut his cloak in half, giving one half to the poor beggar. Those around laughed at St. Martin, now wearing just half a cloak. On the next evening in a dream Martin saw Jesus wearing half of his cloak. Jesus told Martin to inspect it carefully and asked if he recognized it. Jesus then turned to all the angels that surrounded Him and said: “Martin while still a catechumen, clothed me with this garment.” On the last Thursday in November we celebrate Thanksgiving. All of us need to get into the habit of being grateful every day, not just on Thanksgiving. We shouldn’t forget the small things. I read somewhere that every beautiful flower we see, is a thought of our Lord Jesus. November 23rd is the last Sunday in ordinary time when we celebrate our Lord Jesus as Christ the King. The following Sunday, Advent begins. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, let us pray for one another through our Holy Mother and all the saints. We pray for our deceased relatives and friends and for the souls who have no one to pray for them. Have mercy on the sick and suffering, Lord. Please find work for the unemployed. Protect our children and grandchildren from harm. Lord, answer all the special intentions of your faithful ones which are listed in our Prayer Petition Books. May Jesus bless us all and may we see His miracles each day. If you have not already done so, please consider Social Concerns request to provide the necessary food items to complete a dinner for families in need. So far, the response has been rather slow. We are in need of turkeys and frozen pies, which can be placed in the large freezer in the church basement kitchen. Stuffing, mashed potatoes, canned vegetables, fruit, instant coffee and tea bags, sugar packets, along with gravy, can be placed in the bins at the entrances to the church. If needed, we can arrange for pickup of these items. ShopRite and Foodtown are now offering their Turkey Rewards.
