We are in the home stretch if you will of our Lenten Retreat. The days are
moving by very quickly and, before we know it, we will be celebrating the
great and wonderful experience of Holy Week. With that comes the celebration of Palm Sunday and the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy
Saturday/Easter). We follow Jesus to the cross, to the tomb and to the resurrection. We are people of joy, faith and loving trust.
Today, I’m proud to share a brief excerpt from Smile for No Good Reason…Simple Things

In years past, I would accomplish a goal, have a moment of satisfaction, go on to the next

side. Consistent peace of mind eluded me.
Despite being unhappy, I used to think I was successful because I could reach many of the
goals that I set. Now it seems crazy to consider myself successful if I am not happy. In fact, I
would go so far as to say that the key ingredient to success is happiness.
Some goals can be very important, like making enough money for your kid’s education, or
eating a healthier diet and exercising more. There are many books and seminars on clarifying, setting, and achieving these types of goals. Yet many of these approaches miss an important point:
There is only one goal that ultimately matters, one that is an essential part of all others, one

that is available to you at all times—peace of mind.
Having peace of mind in the present moment as your single goal allows you to pursue any
future-oriented objectives with a sense of calm.
When you have peace of mind as your single goal you are saying to yourself: No matter
what is happening in my life—no matter what my physical condition, rich or poor, no matter
if people don’t behave and react to me how I want them to—peace of mind is most important, and is always possible.
Imagine that your thoughts are like a swinging pendulum. Peace of mind is where the pen-

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT • MARCH 22, 2015
THE ALABAMA ACCOUNTABILITY ACT OF 2013—TAX CREDITS FOR
CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCHOLARSHIP GRANTING ORGANIZATIONS
AN UPDATE
The Alabama Accountability Act was upheld by the Alabama Supreme Court on March 2, following a legal
challenge to its constitutionality.
To summarize, the law provides student funding through Scholarship Granting Organizations, or SGOs.
Children are eligible to receive scholarships if their family income does not exceed 150 percent of Alabama’s median household income, and their family income does not exceed 200 percent of the federal
poverty level.
Qualifying students must (1) be younger than 19 years of age, (2) be public or private school students
zoned to attend a public school designated as failing, or (3) have been a non-graduate scholarship recipient in the previous school year under this program, regardless of household income. Alabama defines a
public school as failing if it meets one or more of the following requirements: The school is labeled as
persistently low-performing by the Alabama State Department of Education; the school is designated as a
failing school by the state Superintendent of Education; the school does not exclusively serve a special
population of students; or the school has been listed three or more times during the most recent six years
in the lowest six percent of public K-12 schools on the state standardized assessment in reading and
math. If an SGO has scholarship funds unaccounted for on September 15 of each year, scholarships may
be made available to low-income students in public school, regardless of whether or not their assigned
public school is considered failing.
The Accountability Act is very beneficial to private schools in general, and to Catholic schools in particular,
because the scholarship funds can be applied to tuition at those schools. In fact, Holy Family Regional
School has received several new students through this scholarship program. We are very hopeful that
this trend will continue as we build our school.
This is a great way to support Holy Family Regional School and it does not cost one penny to do so. Alabama taxpayers can apply for a tax credit of up to 50% of their Alabama state taxes, not to exceed $7,500,
each year. To do this, simply go to: http://www.ador.alabama.gov/accountability/.
The Scholarship Granting Organization we primarily use is called Scholarship For Kids. This will be one of
the questions asked. When you apply for the credit, let the office know at the numbers or address below
so we can notify them that the donation is intended for HFS.
Now is the time to reserve your tax credit. By doing this, instead of 100% of your state taxes going to the
Alabama Treasury, 50% will go to the Treasury and 50% to Holy Family. It doesn’t change your tax bill, it
only changes where your taxes end up. This will help insure the survival of Holy Family School and help it
thrive. If you need assistance, please don’t give up. Send a note to [email protected] or call the
office at 256-534-2830, and we will put you in touch with people who can help.
