PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION - MARCH 29, 2015 We are glad you joined us! We are a Eucharistic Community whose mission is to be “Saints Alive” by knowing, loving, and serving God. Through study, piety, and action, in imitation of the Saints, we answer God’s call to stewardship. Our weekly bulletin is one of the ways we share what’s going on in our parish and in the Catholic world. Be sure to also visit us online at SaintJosephPlainCity.com, where you’ll find much more information. Saint Joseph Catholic Church Plain City, Ohio Masses Weekday Masses are at the church. One had only to say a few words or lines from a Psalm and the full story was understood. Just before Jesus died on the cross he cried out, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Mk 15:34. This is the first verse of Psalm 22, the Prayer of an Innocent Person. Today we remember the Passion of our Lord and we walk with him in his last hours. Your challenge - read Psalm 22 and reflect on the story, comparing the Psalmist to Jesus’ Passion and how his opening words of distress turn to joy, for God does not abandon us. He attracted many followers. He sought and was granted Church approval to found the Hermits of St. Francis of Assisi. Francis was known as a prophet and a miracle worker. In 1464, Francis wanted to cross the Straits of Messina to reach Sicily, but a boatman refused to take him. March 29, 2015 www.saintjosephplaincity.com Page 4 Weekly Scripture Challenge~ by Tim Rimmer When Jesus entered Jerusalem the people hailed him saying, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Mk 11:1. To Christians, Hosanna means adoration made in recognition of Jesus, the Messiah. To first century Jews it did not mean that. Its meaning came from rituals performed during the Feast of Tabernacles. Here they rejoiced over the coming fall harvest, singing prayers and waving of palms, for it was the final judgment for their new year. Over time Hosanna came to mean a kind of hurrah of joy, triumph, and exultation. Why were they rejoicing? See the raising of Lazarus, Jn 11. Neighbors need PSR Works of Mercy Project On Monday, March 9, the first through sixth grade PSR classes packed over 50 lunches. The food that made up the lunches was donated by the PSR children and each bag was decorated at our March 9 event. That Friday the lunches were delivered to Monroe Elementary in Plain City for children enrolled in the lunch assistance program. Some of these children do not eat well over the weekend and the lunches were intended to supplement their meals. Our parishioner, Wendy Brown, got to witness some of the children at Monroe receiving the lunches, and she said the kids were very excited to receive them! There is also a bigger community effort in the works to bring lunches to Monroe on an ongoing basis called Sufficient Grace. If you are interested in helping with or donating to this effort, please contact Wendy Brown at [email protected] March 29, 2015 We follow Jesus this week on our Lenten journey as he enters into Jerusalem, a community he knew well.
