How Third Graders Used a
Math Problem to Rescue the
Food Pantry
WhenthestudentsinMs.Previtali’sthird
gradeclassheardthattheSVDPFoodPantry
wasingreatneedforfoodforthepoor,they
cametotherescueinamostunusualand
creativemanner.
Ms.Previtaliexplained,“Oneofthethird
grademathstandardsistosolverealworld
andmathematicalproblemsinvolvingthe
perimeterofpolygons."Theclasswas
tacklingthischallengerightaroundCatholic
SchoolsWeek,whentheschoolconductsa
schoolwideserviceproject.Theclass
decidedtocombineamathchallengeandthe
realworldproblemoffamilieswhoneedfood
inourcommunity.Aninspiringideawas
born.
“HowmanycanswillittaketolinetheperimeterofthedownstairshallwayofSaintRaphaelSchool?”asked
Ms.Previtali.Thethirdgradersjumpedintosolvethequery.
Allgradeswereencouragedtobringincannedgoods.Theyweredeliveredtothirdgrade,wherestudents
keptanof icialtallyandplacedthecansalongthewallsofthehallways.Theclassmadeprojectionson
possibletotalskeepingmathinvolvedintheoutcome.Intheend,theclasscollected706cansoffood.
OnApril1st,dozensofstudentsfromallclassescarriedthecanstothepantry.Theirenergyandenthusiasm
inbothsolvingthemathproblemandservingthepoorisinspiring.
St.VincentdePaulthanksthethirdgradeleadershipandalltheparticipatingstudentsfromallclasses.Weare
blessedtohaveaschoolthatcombinessolvingrealworldproblemswithchallengesinlearning.
