JOSEPH October 19,2014 From the Pastor’s Desk Fr. Philip Kollithanath Eschatological thinking and Eschatological attitude are basic to Catholic Tradition. In fact it is the same for all Christians, considering that all were Catholics until the protestant revolution in the 18th Century. All of us share the same concern of the Early Christian Community: continuously praying together and constantly longing for the Lord’s second coming. It was a focused life and every believer was faithful to His teachings and promises. The source of their strength and unity was their faith in the Risen Lord and what he offered to His followers, eternal glory in the Father’s house. This is the same even today for all believers. The difference is in the seriousness of our conviction and the level of commitment to the lord and His promise. When people grow older, they spend more time praying, meditating, participating in the daily Holy Mass and helping the younger generation learn about faith and Gospel values and how to follow Jesus every day. They have come to realize that life is short. There is not much to hope for. All that this world offers is limited and will be left behind. Only lasting thing that we can hope to have is our love for the Lord and the good things that we do for Him and life we lead dong everything in His Name. when we do not have this realization, we will see people struggling to acquire with insatiable greed all that the lures of this world is enticing them to grab with a vain hope to hold on to it forever. Growing older in the proper way, one becomes sober and seasoned. That helps to look at life from a faith perspective and set goals that are lasting and assuring the eternal life. True models of such a wise life are plenty in the Bible. When St. Paul in his letter (Phil. 4:12-20) to the Philippians tells them of his life that he could handle well in wealth and poverty, in struggles and success, he is showing the perfect Christian way of reviewing one’s life and recognizing the Lord’s continued work of salvation through His abiding presence with us that gives us the strength and courage to keep going. It is only when we rely on Him and His presence that we are able think this way and have the confidence to ignore the way of the world and follow the Lord. Today this is a real challenge on us. If we do not practice such a hopeful and faithful life, how can we expect our children to believe in it, to try to practice it and to live for the Lord? When we know for real that our life is winding down its momentum here on earth, we need to intensify our devotional life and prayerful attitude with a real longing for the Lord. When they see our efforts, the younger generation will believe it and they will cherish it. When we are certain about our decline and if we are struggling for worldly enjoyments and ignoring the need to grow closer to Jesus in prayer and devout life, we are not serious about our Catholic Tradition and we are not helping our children as well. TREASURES AND TRADITIONS When the fathers of the Second Vatican Council met to discuss the sacrament of penance, they were required to draw up a new rite, including several forms. The hot button for debate was socalled “general absolution,” by which a penitent could be absolved of sin without confessing to a priest. This was a difficult debate, compounded by widely varying traditions in both East and West. Some were surprised to learn that the Holy See had already given permission, during the First and Second World Wars, for this form. In 1944 the Vatican issued a decree saying this form was valid under extreme conditions, which bishops in mission lands and Latin America took as a kind of “blanket permission.” Thus, the fathers of the Council were alarmed to find this practice fairly widespread, not only in war, but in peaceful places with huge numbers of faithful and few priests. Although they eventually produced a ritual with three different forms, the forms are not considered equal, and the enriched and revised individual form is preferred. The enrichments include a welcome of the penitent, a sign of the cross with an encouragement to trust in God’s compassion, new texts rich in the Word of God, praise for God’s mercy, and a dismissal.—Rev. De hecho, es la misma para todos los cristianos, teniendo en cuenta que todos eran católicos hasta la revolución protestante en el siglo 18. Cuando St. Paul en su carta (Flp 4. 12-20) a los Filipenses les dice de su vida que él podía manejar bien en la riqueza y la pobreza, en las luchas y éxitos, él está mostrando el camino cristiano perfecto de la revisión de la propia vida y reconociendo continuado la obra del Señor de la salvación por medio de Su presencia constante con nosotros, que nos da la fuerza y el coraje para seguir adelante. Es sólo cuando confiamos en Él y en Su presencia que somos capaces de pensar de esta manera y tener la confianza para pasar por alto el camino del mundo y seguir al Señor.Hoy en día este es un verdadero reto para nosotros. Si no practicamos una vida tan esperanzador y fiel, ¿cómo podemos esperar que nuestros hijos crean en ella, para tratar de practicarlo y vivir para el Señor? Cuando sabemos de verdad que nuestra vida está llegando a su momento aquí en la tierra, tenemos que intensificar nuestra vida devocional y la actitud orante con un verdadero anhelo por el Señor. Cuando ven nuestros esfuerzos, la generación más joven va a creer y van a apreciarlo. Cuando estamos seguros de nuestra decadencia y si estamos luchando por los goces mundanos y haciendo caso omiso de la necesidad de acercarnos más a Jesús en la oración y la vida devota, no somos serios acerca de nuestra tradición católica y no estamos ayudando a nuestros hijos también. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 2006, en la plaza de Taos se erigió una estatua de bronce que conmemora al “cura de Taos”, Antonio José Martínez, un sacerdote recordado como controversial ante varios gobiernos por defender a su pueblo. Él fue sacerdote en Taos, Nuevo México cuando era territorio español, luego mexicano y finalmente cuando pasa a manos de EE. UU. Durante la época española y mexicana Antonio estableció escuelas para niños y niñas y fundó un seminario para preparar un clero nativo. En 1830 empezó a imprimir libros y estableció el primer periódico Nuevo Mexicano. De esta manera estableció Taos como un centro de educación. En 1851 llegaron los representantes del gobierno estadounidense con la intención de “americanizar” a los nuevos mexicanos prohibiéndoles sus tradiciones declarando que eran ignorantes y supersticiosas. Antonio José contradijo este movimiento convirtiendo su seminario en una escuela de leyes. Decía que el gobierno de EE. UU es un burro que debe ser montado por abogados.
