In the first we hear the story of how Abraham was put to the test. He is referred to as “our father in faith” precisely because he was willing to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, because the Lord God had commanded it. When Abraham stands ready kill Isaac, the Lord God intervenes, prevents the sacrifice, and blesses Abraham in abundance. In the second story, the only Son of God is transfigured on a mountaintop before the eyes of Peter, James, and John. As the sacred word is proclaimed, let us ask God to strengthen our own faith and lead us one day to share in the transfigured glory of Christ.
