P
POLKA DOT DAY!!!
ut on your very best polka dots; Hat, Skirt, Scarf or
Dress. Prizes will be awarded for the most polka dots!
America's love affair with the polka dot began, perhaps, in 1926, when Miss America was photographed in a
polka dot swimsuit. Shortly after, in 1928, Disney introduced its cartoon darling Minnie Mouse wearing a red
polka dot dress and matching bow. Throughout the 1930s,
polka dot dresses appeared in stores, the fabric suddenly
subversive, nipped in by ribbons and accentuated with
bows. In 1940, the woozy melody of Frank Sinatra’s ballad
“Polka Dots and Moonbeams” captured the height of
America’s polka dot mania—that spring, the Los Angeles
Times assured its readers, “You can sign your fashion life
away on the polka-dotted line, and you'll never regret it.”

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
SUZANNE BRIGGS
PAYROLL MANAGER
Suzanne Briggs has been selected as the Employee of the
Month for April by the Employee of the Month Selection
Committee, comprised of Employees of the Month for 2014.
Originally from Long Island, New York, she relocated
to Florida in June, 1995. She began working part-time
in the Accounting Department in November 1995.
Suzanne was recently promoted in February to the Payroll Manager. She also performs Resident Billing and
assists residents with any questions.
Suzanne resides in Palm City with her husband John.
She has two sons, Adam and Jason, and has two
adorable little grandsons, Carter and Cullen. She is expecting her first granddaughter in May as well.
Suzanne’s hobbies include going to the beach, reading,
gardening, and spending time with her family.
One manager had this to say about Suzanne: Suzanne
interacts with several residents, employees, and department heads every day. Along with navigating her day to
day responsibilities, she assists residents with billing
questions, assists employees with questions of utilizing
personal/sick time and vacation time, and many other
questions on a daily basis. She does all of this while fully
embracing Sandhill Cove’s Hospitality Promises. She
never gives off the perception she is too busy to help
someone.
Since starting work here in 1995, Suzanne has seen a lot
of changes with Sandhill Cove and several buildings
were added including Gardens North, Pavilion and the
ECC Wing. When asked what she liked best about
Sandhill Cove, she replied: “ I truly enjoy working with
the residents and my co-workers!”
Please join us in congratulating Suzanne on being selected the Employee of the Month for April 2015.

COURT HOUSE
CULTURAL CENTER
GALLERY AND LUNCH
he long history of the Court House Cultural Center
began in 1908, as the first schoolhouse in Stuart,
built on land originally donated by Mr. R.R. Frazier.
When a new school house was completed in 1923, the old
building became the Martin County Courthouse. Scheduled to be demolished in 1989, it was saved by concerned
citizens who lobbied for grant money from the Florida
State Department of Historic Preservation and matched by
the funds from Stuart. The restoration saved the original
windows, judge’s vault, marble staircase and terrazzo floor
inlaid with the commemorative emblem inside the front
door. Other significant artifacts include two benches used
by visitors during court proceedings and one of the chair’s
from the juror’s box. To this day, the building houses,
many photographs depicting the history of the building.
Many local artist and photographers display their works at
the Cultural Center. Following the tour we will stop for
lunch at the Harvest Table Café in Stuart. The date will be
Friday, April 3. The bus will depart the Clubhouse at 10:30
a.m. and will return at 2:30 p.m. Reservations required.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT
DICK BLAGBROUGH
By: Gail Deaver
“SWEAR at poison ivy, maybe at
a golf ball, but never at a flower,”
joked Dick Blagbrough, Waterside
306. With a lifelong enthusiasm
for gardening, he and his wife, nee
Joan McKenzie, built a garden at
their home in Duxbury, MA which
became a Display Garden for the
American Daylily Society. They
designed and contoured it. They
set out more than a thousand
daylilies of many varieties. “We
couldn’t wait to see the catalogs in December when the
snow was on the ground,” he said. Daylilies range from
plain orange to exotic eyed varieties. They planted many
rhododendrons and over 400 Hostas. “With every different
leaf shape, Hostas are fascinating,” he continued. “Joan
would lay out the design and in a couple of hours, I would
be there with my shovel.”
“I like English gardens best because they are full of flowers and doable by one or two people,” he said. “But some
of the antique Italian gardens, just greenery without blossoms, but with lots of bubbling water, are very pleasant.
They were designed for wealthy people to stroll through.”
Music is another lifelong interest for Dick, starting with
singing in a junior choir and continuing today with his directorship of The Atlantic Classical Orchestra. “It’s an incredible puzzle to gather the musicians, to give them
classical pieces new to them, and to develop such high class
music,” he said enthusiastically.
Brought up in West Newton, MA, Dick feels he had a topnotch cultural and educational youth. Tufts University and
Tufts Dental School preceded a stint in the Navy. For fifteen years he practiced dentistry in West Newton but then
he was called to teach at Tufts Dental. He became Dean of
Clinical Affairs. He proudly stated, “We teach the meat
and potatoes for local dentists but also research because
that’s where the future is.”
“I learned how to survive in the rough world when I taught
2015
summers at the Victory Field Camp in Nonantum, MA.
Although from two distinct, hard-fisted immigrant groups,
from destitute and alcoholic homes, the kids got along
well. Leonard Bernstein didn’t write any songs about us,”
he remembered.
Before moving to Sand Hill, he and Joan lived for 17 years
at Willoughby Country Club. Frequent travels took them
back to New England and all over Europe: even to Saudi
Arabia, a “strange and wonderful” country, he reminisced.
“People keep asking me to do things,” he explained, mentioning being moderator of the Second Church in Newton;
Commodore of the Duxbury Yacht Club, and chairman of
the Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, MA.
However, having a golf handicap of twelve is something
he did on his own. “But I never hit a hole in one,” he
lamented. Winning the Willoughby Club Member-Member championship with Sand Hill Cove resident Glen Paxton was a memorable event for Dick.
“There is nothing better in golf or in life than having a
great partner,” he said.
