Ocean Blvd. / Stuart, Florida 34996 Sandhill Cove May RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT WILLIAM HOLMBERG By: Gail Deaver Why would an American kid who started by scavenging trash end up being honored by the US president at the US Naval Academy? Bill Holmberg, GN 1112, has three main tracks to his life; a career in the US Marines, racial integration, and environmental protection. When his father skipped, leaving behind his wife, six daughters, and Bill, newborn, he became “the man of the family.” At 5, partners with a black kid, he salvaged trash, food, and materials, from a railroad junk yard in Bellingham, WA. He sold the stuff to support his family. Many jobs followed, berry picking, setting ties for the railroad, the pulp mill, farming with immigrant workers, killing pigs, etc. But “his home was not a home; just a place that needed money.” He found comfort with the family of his black friend. They taught him to read and write. Because of “no end to the requirement of funds,” he seldom went to school. At 14, he passed himself off as 18 and was drafted “to get away from the mess.” At the induction center, “a man in a good-looking uniform” asked him to sign up for the Marines. After Marine boot camp, he was assigned to reconnaissance, the “Seals” of the day. When background checks showed him to be only 15, he was discharged. A couple of years later, a union rep suggested that he get his congressman to sponsor him for the US Naval Academy. Needing recommendations, he knocked on many doors which remained shut. But because of his early morning paper route, he had often taken home men “who had had a snootful at the local bawdy house drinking club.” When the woman in charge told him to use her name, doors were opened and he got a huge pile of recommendations. After two years of preparation, he entered Annapolis. There he was baptized and prayed his way through. Then, as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps, he was wounded in a “nasty battle with the Koreans,” and shipped home. After hospitalization, he was trained as a Russian specialist. In 1955, he worked behind the iron curtain to 2015 find out how the communists were taking over. “by money, fear, political maneuvering, and huge armies.” Returning to the active Marines, he toured colleges recruiting Marine officers. He recommended 12 outstanding young men to his superior officer who threw out 3 applications, remarking, “We don’t have n------ officers in the Marines.” Disobeying his commanding officer, Bill returned with President Truman’s directive prohibiting racial discrimination in the armed services. The Marine Corps accepted all 12 applications. Bill had integrated the Marine officer Corps. He went on to help integrate the town of Annapolis and end discrimination in public housing for military personnel in Washington, DC. Posted to the North of Okinawa, he organized the shipping of three truckloads of used school books to the local schools. The local principals asked Bill to send some marine volunteers to help teach. Bill organized piping water into the schools. He organized Little League. He set up religious services. After a May Day baseball game, his marines and 100 local children sang God Bless America, in English. In the South, locals were rioting against America. A heart attack brought his Marine career to a close. Continuing to serve the government, he worked in the Selective Service Agency. That agency drafted 10 blacks to 2 whites. At Nixon’s request, Bill was able to fix the ratio to more equal representation. When the Environmental Protection Agency was just getting underway, Bill transferred to it. His important actions included destroying the nerve gas stored at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds; organizing the nationwide collection of water samples for analysis of the eutrophication of lakes and rivers; completing the environmental impact statement for nuclear power plants, and finalizing actions on pesticide use. He explained, “The EPA can regulate any project.” In 1970, because of the oil embargo, he liasoned between the 10 federal regions for fair distribution of oil. But he found the oil companies, “lying and cheating, getting rid of independent filling stations, cooking their books about their oil sources.” Knowing this problem, he became fascinated by other technologies, particularly biomass energy, as alternatives to petroleum. In the private sector, he managed renewable Continued on next page May Sandhill Cove 2015 RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT Continued from previous page energy alternatives. For example, in Madagascar, the ethanol plant uses cassava root and produces 300 gallons of 200 proof ethanol a day. The liquid is sealed in small containers which hitch on to stoves and ovens for cooking. Goats eat the waste. He helped found the American Council on Renewable Energy and the Latin American and Caribbean Council. While he was with the EPA, two personal experiences enhanced his life. He married Anne Ruhling in 2002. “She merits a “Spotlight” of her own,” he said. He became the president of the Peace Lutheran Church in Vienna, VA. These experiences, plus being the 1961 marine graduate from the US Naval Academy with the most medals, (Navy Cross, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Silver Medal, and Joint Service Commendation,) led him to be honored at the USNA by President George W. Bush. With humility, Bill said, ”Four things contributed to my life: the importance of chance opportunities, the good will of people, the forgiving nature of the Pacific Northwest, and the US government which gave me everything I have.” B HOBE SOUND NATURE EXHIBIT AND LUNCH e sure to join us on Wednesday, May 20 for a tour of the Hobe Sound Nature Hall which houses over twenty wildlife animals native to Florida.
