Day
May is always a very busy month for high
school students. Please check the newsletter
closely for information on the Senior Breakfast,
the Awards Assembly, and final exams. The
last day of student attendance is May 15.
5/6 Spring
Concert 7 p.m.
Thanks to Pepsi and several donors for the
new scoreboard recently installed on our
soccer field. The scoreboard was used for the
first time on Apr. 28 when our girls soccer team
played Notre Dame.
5/8 Play Day
Thanks also to our Booster Club and some
generous donors for the state championship
and team banners now hanging in our gym.
God continues to bless Saxony in so many
ways. We have four students preparing to
attend the state music auditions. Our state
runner-up scholar bowl team will be
competing in sectionals, hoping to get back
to the state finals. Josh Vogel was recently
recognized as one of Missouri’s Top 100
Scholars. Josh is the first Saxony student to
achieve that recognition.
As we look back on the 2014-2015 school year,
our theme from Philippians 4:4 has been very
fitting. We rejoice in the Lord for all the many
great events. We rejoice in the Lord for great
students, great staff members, and great
parents. We rejoice in the Lord for all those
who support SLHS, and we ask for your
continued prayers as we continue our mission
of “Sharing Christ and Shaping Lives.”

Junior Parents’ Help Needed for Senior Breakfast
The Senior Breakfast will be held Thurs., May 7 at 7:15 a.m. It has been the tradition at Saxony for junior parents
to prepare a breakfast for the seniors and their families. In order to serve a crowd of 175+ people, we need
lots of help and donations. If you are available to help set up after school on Wed., May 6 or help serve on the
morning of the breakfast, please let us know. If you wish to provide a monetary or food donation (we have a
list of needs), please contact Sara Lynne Roettger at [email protected] or Becky Hurst at
[email protected]. Any way you can help is much appreciated!
Music News
On Friday, April 24, the Saxony Band and
Chamber Choir each toured to two of our
feeder schools, bringing the joyous news
of Christ to their students. At left is a
photo of the band performing at United In
Christ Lutheran School.
On Sat., May 2, Joshua Varnon, Joshua Vogel, Annie Hurst, and
Reed Thomas (pictured at right, L to R) will each audition at the
State Music Contest in Columbia. We pray that you do your best!
The Spring Concert will be held on Wed., May 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the
school gym. The band and choirs will be performing some great
music. We hope to see you at our final performance of the year!
Booster Club
The annual spring clean up day is May 3 starting at noon. Please join us as we clean up the school grounds in
preparation for the many visitors that will be on site for all of the end-of-year activities. Students are welcome
to help and this can earn you service hours as well. Bring rakes, weed eaters, leaf blowers, or any power tools
that will make the job easier. Please contact Kevin Gruenwald if you will be helping, as food and drink will be
provided for all the helpers!
Teacher appreciation day is May 5. The Booster Club wants thank all the teachers and staff at Saxony for all
your support and loyalty. We truly do appreciate all you do!
The next Booster Club meeting is May 12 at 6:30 p.m. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2015. God's
blessings to you on your new journey beyond high school.
Spanish Food Day
Spanish classes will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a food day on May 5. Participation is worth 30
points. Students decide what to bring but will need approval from Ms. Story.

Tobacco-Free Missouri
Gavin Brown, Josh Varnon, Corie Williams & Jake Wyatt
(pictured at right, L to R) recently represented SLHS at a
Tobacco-Free Missouri event in Dexter. They competed
with students from other schools to present a
non-tobacco message within 30 seconds.
Check out Saxony Lutheran High School's Facebook
page to watch the video of their presentation.
Saxony’s team earned third place out of several schools
in the competition. Congratulations boys!
Mission Task Force
Saxony Lutheran High School and our partner schools (Immanuel, St. Paul, Trinity, and United in Christ) are
excited to announce that together we have raised over $16,000 during the last 18 months. Money raised has
supported The Water Project and Hope Seeds. We are excited to have helped share the Gospel message
around the world.
Personal Finance
This semester’s personal finance class recently completed the H&R Block Budget Challenge, simulating realworld money management skills: paying bills, managing expenses, saving money, investing in retirement and
more. The class of 24 students competed for scholarship money offered by H&R Block with 1,388 other classes
across the country. The “Saxony Smart Spenders” feel that the simulation was very beneficial and did pretty
well ending with a ranking of 347 out of 1,388 classes. At the halfway point of the 12-week activity, we were
ranked in the 500’s; always good to see progress!
Special congratulations go to our top two students who also received a class and national ranking:
Maddie Brune, Class Rank #1, National Rank #606; and Luke LeGrand, Class Rank #2, National Rank #1159.

Technology Q & A with Mrs. Beaudean
Q: What programs can my student be learning now to prepare for classes in August?
Students will be using Microsoft OneNote 2013 and Word 2013 extensively throughout their
courses. Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher will be available on their tablets and
used in various courses. Basic knowledge of these four programs will be beneficial.
The Computer Applications 1 course at Saxony offers specialized training in Microsoft Word,
OneNote, and PowerPoint. Computer Applications 2 offers training for Microsoft Excel and
Access.
Adobe Reader, a free downloadable program from Adobe, will be used to modify PDF
documents. Students can benefit from learning how to use the highlight and comment
features in Adobe Reader.
Students can also benefit from using a Windows 8.1 device to familiarize themselves with
the use of apps and the Start menu.
Q: Which online services will my student use each day?
A: Students will use their PlusPortals accounts every day for the following: checking course
pages for shared files, links, lesson plan activities, and to check grades.
Students will use Office 365 email accounts every day. All students receive a free email account with 50 GB of cloud storage to save digital files and access Office Web Apps (online
versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote).
Students will receive log-in and Plus Portals information in the mail at the end of May.
Q: Can we expect any additional cost for apps or e-textbooks?
A: Students will not be expected to purchase apps or e-textbooks for classes in the 20152016 school year. Apps that will be used school-wide will be installed on the student’s
device before they receive it. Students will not have access to installing unapproved apps
or programs on their devices. The use of e-textbooks or e-books will vary from course to
course.
More questions and answers will come this summer! If you have additional questions, or one
you would like to see answered in the newsletter, please send them to
[email protected].

2014-15 SCHOOL YEAR
Educational cost per student . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $7,370
Average Tuition Cost (Lutheran $3,990; non-Lutheran $5,400) . . . $4,220

$1,500
Approximately $1,500 per student is needed to bridge the gap between the cost to educate a student and the average
amount that is actually received through tuition, fees and other fundraising efforts. To effectively meet this crucial need,
we rely on the generosity of many donors to support our mission with annual gifts to make up that difference, regardless of
the gift amount.
BECOME A PARTNER IN DISCIPLESHIP!
You can join the many that have supported Saxony Lutheran High School through prayer and financial support by being a
PARTNER in DISCIPLESHIP with a minimum $1,500 annual gift. Remember, your tax-deductible charitable gift can and does
make a difference.
BEYOND YOUR GIFT, consider some other ways you can “PARTNER” with Saxony.
Share your TIME by volunteering to help with event planning or mailings.
Remember or show tribute to someone through a memorial or honor gift in his or her name.
Consider non-cash gifts such as stock transfers or property donations.
Leave a legacy by including Saxony in your will or estate plans and ensure our future.
Continue to pray for our ministry so together we can focus on “Sharing Christ and Shaping Lives.”

Go to

for more
information and to

 As this school year comes to a close, I want to thank you once again for the chance
to work with your students. I’ve seen some great things this year from our children, and I
am looking forward to the years ahead with our returning students, and to seeing great
things from the Class of 2015.
 Final grades will be posted to PlusPortals as they become available, and each family
will receive a semester report card in the mail. Please note that all books and other
supplies must be returned, and all payments for the 2014-2015 school year must be
up-to-date before grades can be released.
 Your report card mailing will also include a final list of course selections for 2015-2016
and important information about summer and fall activities.
 I recently sent an email describing the online dual credit courses available this
summer and next fall. Enrollment for these courses needs to take place immediately!
 Students enrolled in Psychology, Advanced Biology, or College Writing who would
like dual credit need to return the enrollment forms now. You will be billed over the summer, so watch
your email and mail for payment information. Registration for all other dual credit courses will take place
in August or December.
 Some dual credit courses will require book fees, whether or not they are taken for dual credit. Final
information about this will be included in the report card mailing.
 By the time your read this, a number of our students will have taken the Southeast math placement exam.
Students who still need to qualify for the dual credit option for math courses will one more chance to earn
a 22 on the math portion of the ACT. Please register now for the June exam.
 I have begun sending scholarship and program information weekly, rather than monthly, using PlusPortals
emails. Please check these regularly for important and exciting opportunities.
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO THIS SUMMER?
The summer is a great time to have fun and relax, and you should definitely do that. Here are a few ideas
(in addition to those above) for how to use the rest of your summer vacation time to work on your long-term
goals.

Job Shadow—Observe someone at work. Would this be a career for you?

Volunteer—Get ahead on your service hours while exploring areas of interest. Consider hospitals, nursing
homes, summer childcare programs, helping schools get ready for next year, etc.

ACT Practice—I especially like the free website number2.com . After you take a diagnostic test, you’ll just
practice the kinds of questions you don’t do well on. Imagine the impact as little as an hour of practice a
day can make by the end of the summer.

Read, Read, Read—One great way to improve your ACT scores in English, Reading, and Writing is reading
good writing. The more you practice, the better you’ll score. See your LA teacher for ideas.

Get a Job—Many students work over the summer. Help yourself out by saving as much as you can now so
you won’t have to work as much while you are in college later.
