October 2014 Saxony Lutheran High School Rejoice in the Lord Always and in All Ways “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.” Philippians 4:4 SAXONY CRUSADERS Principal’s Message God's blessings on your day! We rejoice in the Lord ALWAYS and in ALL WAYS at Saxony Lutheran High School. We rejoice in the support of our associate churches and we will host a Pastor Appreciation Chapel and Breakfast on Wed., Oct. 22. We hope all pastors will be able to attend. Saxony Lutheran High School exists to center students on Christ and God’s Word, to strive for excellence in all phases of education and to prepare students for a life of Christian discipleship using God’s Word as their guide. Saxony Lutheran High School 2004 Saxony Dr. Jackson, MO 63755 Phone 573-204-7555 Fax 573-204-7445 saxonylutheranhigh.org We rejoice in the Lord that enrollment has grown in the past year to 210. We are looking forward to Future Freshman Day on Wed., Oct. 1. We pray that God will direct more families to SLHS and that our growth will continue. The teenage years are sometimes difficult for our children, and the opportunity to attend high school in a Christian environment is critical to strengthening their faith during those years. We also rejoice in the academic accomplishments of our students. Joshua Vogel has been recognized as a National Merit Semifinalist which puts him in the top 1% of all American high school students who took the PSAT. Josh will now be considered for the distinction of becoming a National Merit Finalist. Jacob Aufdenberg has also been recognized as a National Merit Commended Student, which puts him in the top 5% of all students who took the PSAT nationwide. With the help and direction of our Heavenly Father, great things are happening at SLHS. Please pray that our upcoming Crusader Challenge Oct. 21-31 will prosper our mission of “Sharing Christ and Shaping Lives.” Dates to Remember 10/1 Future Freshman Day 10/7 Fall Concert 7 p.m. 10/15 Scrip Orders Due 10/21 Crusader Challenge Begins 10/22 Pastor Appreciation Chapel and Breakfast 10/23 Testing Day—Early Dismissal 10/24 No School 10/26 Athletics Golf Tournament 10/27 Crusader Challenge Kettle Beef Dinner 4 p.m.7 p.m. 10/30 Mass Band Concert 6 p.m. 10/31 Crusader Challenge Ends 10/31 Halloween Dance 7 p.m.10 p.m. Inside this issue: School News 2-3 Development News 4-5 Counselor’s Update 6-7 In His Service, Activities Calendar 8 Mark Ruark Lunch Menu 9 Page 2 SLHS October 2014 School News Saxony Job Openings Saxony Lutheran High School is accepting applications for a head girls’ soccer coach and a freshmen boys’ basketball coach. If any student did not receive this information, please contact Mrs. Beaudean. Music Department Events The Saxony Fall Concert will be on Tues., Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m. The band and choirs will perform a variety of repertoire. Come enjoy a great evening! Admission is free. Page 3 SLHS October 2014 School News Mission Task Force Saxony Lutheran High School along with local Lutheran elementary schools are participating in The Water Project's water challenge. Our challenge is to make water our only beverage for two weeks beginning on Oct. 13. Students should save the money which would have gone to other beverages and turn the money in at the end of two weeks. Our goal is for each student to save $23.00 at the end of two weeks. The average American spends $23.00 on non-water beverages during a two-week period. The money raised will be used to support clean water projects in developing nations. We are also encouraging families to participate in the water challenge. Please visit www.thewaterproject.org for more information. Athletics Golf Tournament The Girls Basketball and Boys Golf Teams are co-sponsoring an Athletics Golf Tournament at 1:00 p.m. on Sun. Oct. 26 at the Bent Creek Golf Course. This is a four–person scramble to support both sports programs. The cost is $75.00 per person or $300.00 per team. For information or to enter, contact Coach Sides at 225-4449 or Coach Obergoenner at 243-6060. Swimming Boys Swimming - The team will participate in the Cape Rock Invitational on Oct. 4 which is one of the fastest and most competitive meets in the State of Missouri. The season continues with the team moving toward the Conference Championship Meet that will be held at Central Municipal Pool in Cape Girardeau on Oct. 30. Between now and then the team has a busy meet schedule with meets against Jackson, Cape Central and Notre Dame, to name a few. Girls Swimming - The season will begin with the first practice on Nov. 10. Before the season begins, there will be an organizational meeting after school and a sign-up sheet will be placed in the office for interested swimmers. The team is open to any student willing to join the success of the team. Also, Open Gyms for girls swimming will be on the following Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at Central Municipal Pool in Cape Girardeau: Oct. 11, Oct. 18 and Oct. 25. Please keep these dates in mind and come out to the pool to get a head start on the season or to learn more about the team. Blood Drive Thank you to everyone who supported the Student Council Blood Drive on Sept. 22. We had 23 people attempt to donate with 18 successful donations. Booster Club Congratulations to Lydia Mockler for winning the IPad mini! Her name was chosen from all who placed an order through the Crusader Shop. Please continue to check out our logo items at the Crusader Shop by visiting www.saxonylutheranhigh.org and clicking on the Crusader Shop tab at the left. Thank you to all who supported the Ford Drive One event. We had a record number of drivers this year. We appreciate all who volunteered their time to make this event successful. The Booster Club was very busy again this year at the East Perry Fair. Thanks to everyone who signed up and worked their shift. Great fellowship, food, and fun was had by all at “the best little fair in the land.” Page 4 SLHS October 2014 Development News GOLF CLASSIC Many volunteers, golfers and sponsors helped make our 15th Annual Golf Classic a huge success. The event was held on Fri., Sept. 12 at the beautiful Cape Girardeau Country Club. We also appreciate our friends at the City of Roses Thrivent Chapter for providing funds for our tournament. While it takes many hands and the sacrifice of time, the event could not happen without the help of many. David Dissen CRUSADER CHALLENGE Join us for a meeting on Wed., Oct. 1 at 6:00 p.m. in the library to learn how to help with this year’s Crusader Challenge. The competition is sure to be tough as we kick off this exciting event at an All-School Assembly on Tues., Oct. 21. Be looking for your child to be bringing home a packet of items to sell. Each class will earn points through sales and various activities happening each day. The winning class will be presented the traveling trophy and will crown the girl and boy with the most points in their class as Crusader Challenge King and Queen the night of the Halloween Dance. Students will also be asked to sell tickets to a kettle beef dinner on Mon., Oct. 27 from 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the school. Other activities such as a car wash and silent auction will be held during the evening. This dinner will be open to the public and will continue to raise awareness of the great things happening at Saxony Lutheran High School. The whole purpose of this challenge being held Oct. 21 – 31 is to raise money for our general budget and to build teamwork and increase school spirit. Last year we raised $13,000 and the students and faculty had a lot of fun. There will be many ways that parents can help with the Crusader Challenge that might include providing desserts for the dinner, organizing sales and activities, or counting money. The more involved the parents and students are with this event, the more money will be generated and the more fun will be had! The CLASS of 2017 (Freshmen last year) won the challenge. Who will win this year? Contact Rhonda Wessel at 803-7612 or [email protected] with any questions about the Crusader Challenge. Please take the time to read the following so that you know what to expect and can help your student be prepared. On Wed., Oct. 15, we are offering the PSAT to interested sophomore and juniors. As I wrote last month, the PSAT is no longer required for students. Registration was due on Sept. 22, but if your student is still interested, please contact me immediately. The testing fee is $15. Also on Oct.15, sophomores and seniors will hear from Jostens about ordering class rings (sophomores) and graduation items (seniors). Jostens will be taking orders at Saxony on Wed., Oct. 22 from 2:30—4:30 pm, and parents are welcome to come help their students at that time. The first quarter ends on Fri., Oct. 17. Grades will not be mailed home unless this is requested by a parent. Please keep up with grades by using the PlusPortals! The Regional College Fair is on Mon., Oct. 20 at the Show-Me Center. Saxony juniors and seniors are invited to this event, and will be dismissed after 5th hour at 1:04 if they plan to attend. The fair ends at 2:30 p.m., and students are not required to return to Saxony at the end of the day. Permission slips were distributed in religion classes and are due on Oct. 6. Parents are also welcome to attend the College Fair. Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Oct. 21 and Oct. 23. Please plan to attend so that we can continue to work together to serve your student. In the past, we have held a Testing Day every October. This year, only one group of students will be testing, so it seems odd to call it Testing Day. That being said, on Thurs., Oct. 23, we are having a half-day of school, with dismissal at noon. No lunch will be served, and each class will have a different activity for the day. Freshmen—October 23 will be a school service day. Students and teachers will go into the community to serve at various locations. I will be sharing details with students and parents soon. Parents, your help as chaperones and drivers will be appreciated. Sophomores—October 23 will be a testing day. Students will take the new ACT Aspire, which replace the PLAN last year. This will take place at Saxony. I will share more testing information with sophomores in the next week or two. Juniors—October 23 is your Job Shadow day. I have already given juniors information about this, as well as sent parents an email update. Details are also available on the LA3 PlusPortals page. Seniors—October 23 is your class meeting day. You will discuss many items related to senior year, including graduation. There will also be a guest or two to talk about how to have a successful senior year. I am continuing to meet with freshmen in classroom sessions during October. So far, we have discussed how to succeed in high school, goal setting, and using planners to keep up with life. We will be working on other study skills in the coming weeks. This program will supplement the Junior Conferences held each spring. In September, we discussed characteristics universities and scholarship providers are looking for in their applicants. This month, we will review sources of career and college information, and discuss some myths and misconceptions about college. In October, I will beginning meeting with sophomores and freshmen in New Testament classes. Our topic this year will focus on career exploration. Students will complete a number of activities as they seek to better understand God’s will for their futures. I am happy to meet with parents and families at any time to discuss your concerns, including academics, college and career planning, and personal and social concerns. Just ask! UPCOMING COLLEGE FAIRS The National Lutheran College Fair is on Sun., Oct. 12 in St. Louis. The Concordia Universities are not the only Lutheran colleges — check out the list available at www.lutherancolleges.org (other details there as well). Special features include a Financial Aid Information Session and an Hors d 'Oeuvres Reception. The National College Fair will be held on Sun., Oct. 19 also in St. Louis. Although a bit of a drive, this fair is an excellent opportunity for all students and parents to meet with representatives from over 200 schools from around the country. In addition, workshops on “Financial Aid,” “How to Choose a College,” “Essay Writing” and “NCAA Information” will be offered throughout the afternoon. For more information see www.nacacnet.org. If you plan to attend the this fair, register online at www.nacacnet.org before you go. When you do, you will receive a bar code that will allow you to give your information to college reps without having to fill in all those cards! You can register for a barcode at the fair, but doing so early will save you lots of time standing in line. CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES and SCHOLARSHIPS In the past, I have used this space to share scholarship and program information with students. I am now going to use PlusPortals to provide that same information in a more timely, and I hope, more convenient way. Here’s how to find out about scholarships… When you sign in to PlusPortals, there will be an option for Groups on the right side, near your name. Select that, and then select Counselor from the drop-down menu. Scroll down to find Links and Files. I have some interesting links there, and scholarships and other programs are listed with the deadline first. Be sure to look through all the pages. I’ll send an email soon with more detailed instructions for using this page. One of the links is to my Pinterest page. I have several boards here covering topics such as college search, admission, financial aid, and scholarships, as well as general counseling topics. If you come across something you think would be of interest to other Saxony parents, please let me know!
