PRINCIPAL'S REPORT http://bssns.businesscatalyst.com/CampaignProcess.aspx?A=View&Data=1zszXU2QO... 1/06/2015 Page 5 of 12 Celebrating under eight's week Next week our Prep – Year 2 students will be celebrating everything that is great about being “Under Eight”. The children, teachers and parents will be travelling to Seven Hills State School on Thursday 4 June for a day of fun activities. We hope you have a wonderful time. Thank you to all the parents who are going along to help. Using the brain for happiness - 'Brain Talk for Kids' In week 10 this term, we will be conducting a session for each Prep – Year 6 class called ‘Brain Talk for Kids’. The Prep – Year 3 session is 30 minutes and the Years 4 – 6 session is 45 minutes. Research has demonstrated that teaching students about how their brain works – in particular, that the brain is plastic and can develop new capacities with effort and practice – makes a big difference in how constructively children deal with mistakes and setbacks, and how motivated they are to persist until they achieve mastery. Each session presentation aims to: Introduce students to their ‘hardware’ – the brain, and ‘software’ – the mind. • Show that understanding how the brain works can help in cultivating happiness and wellbeing. • Give children a simple model to understand emotional regulation and self-regulation. • The sessions will be conducted by the “Pathways to Resilience Trust” and the school will be paying for the sessions. The “Pathways to Resilience Trust” is a charitable organisation established in August 2007 with the specific purpose to promote social and emotional learning and resilience in children, adolescents and families, and to assist in the prevention of anxiety, depression and youth suicide. A Parent information session titled, “Building Kids a Better Brain” will also be held in our school hall on Thursday 25 June from 7pm – 8.30pm. The session will be free to parents and we encourage you to come along. A flyer is attached to this week’s newsletter. Please contact our office if you would like to attend. Disco help needed We are looking parents who can help with our disco on Thursday 18 June. The times are: • • 5.00pm – 6.15pm Prep – Year 2 6.30pm – 8.15pm Years 3 – 6 Please contact your child’s class teacher if you can help or contact our office. Physical Education (PE) reporting for 2015 In 2015 we have started to teach the new National Curriculum for PE. Every year level will complete four units of work per year and each unit of work will have specific assessment tasks that will be reported on student report cards. Two units will be reported on each Semester. For example: During Term one in Year 6 the children created their own water game and in Term two they have designed their own fitness station. The results from these two units are combined to determine the child’s overall result for their report card in Semester one. http://bssns.businesscatalyst.com/CampaignProcess.aspx?A=View&Data=1zszXU2QO... 1/06/2015 Page 6 of 12 We understand that your child may participate in before and after school sporting activities, however this will not contribute towards their school PE report. Preparing to receive your child's semester one report card When report cards were emailed home at the end of last year, a number of service providers saw the report card mail out as spam, causing the email with the report card to be delivered into people’s junk/spam folder rather than their inbox. Please add [email protected] to your ‘safe senders list’ so your child’s Semester 1 report card will be delivered to your inbox at the end of the term. If the email address on your enrolment form has changed, please let the office know by Friday 19 June. Changes received after this date may mean that your child’s report card is not delivered on time.
