The school uniform policy outlines that students are to wear a maroon coloured jumper. This jumper does not need to be the school jacket/ jumper sold at the uniform shop but can be purchased at any retailer as long as it is primarily maroon in colour. It is strongly encouraged that parents/caregivers clearly mark the student's jumpers with their names as the cold mornings warm up the students often take off their jumpers particularly at play times and misplace these. As a parent myself I know it is not practical or financially viable to keep purchasing jumpers so a small amount of proactive naming of clothing will go a long way to possible heartache later . Any lost property is now taken to the tuckshop who maintains this for the school community. POLICE - TRAFFIC (from Gold Coast Police) Last week I placed in the school newsletter information provided to me from our local Police about an enforcement strategy for school traffic areas. Although not clearly evident yet at our school I do know many schools have had a clear presence and in time this will occur at Burleigh Heads State School. I know the safety of our young students is paramount for all members for our school community and ask that all individuals park and act safely around the school precinct at all times. ANZAC Day Burleigh Heads March Again we had a wonderful turn out from our school community to the annual Burleigh Heads ANZAC Day March and Ceremony. On a quick count before we marched we had in excess of 100 students with many parents, staff and extended families in attendance. It is always great to see our school community come together and particularly to see our students march proudly in their school uniforms. This year's ceremony was by far the largest that I have been associated with and I would like to thank the Burleigh Heads RSL and Mr Chris Keating for once again running a terrific march and ceremony. Mr Keating has been a longtime supporter of our school and although retiring as President of the Burleigh Heads RSL I know we will be able to call on his wisdom well into the future. MIAMI STATE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL'S NOMINEE This week I have received the first of many Principal's Nominee applications for Miami State High School. I have an opportunity to choose only one student from Year 6 which is a very difficult decision to make. My decisions will be made in due course as the year progresses so it enables our students time to demonstrate their all-round qualities. Historically, I have chosen students that have demonstrated all-round qualities rather than excelling in any particular field or domain. The sticker badge for this week is Persistence VALUE FOCUS FOR THIS WEEK—PERSISTENCE You may like to discuss some of these points with your children. Teachers have been focussing on this important value this week. When something starts to bother you, wait as long as you can before you express frustration. When something doesn't work right, try again and again. Don't lose your temper when something upsets you. Always finish what you start. Keep working at something that is difficult until you complete it. Don't give up on difficult jobs or situations. Focus on someone or something that ordinarily makes you lose your patience and try to understand it (and don't "lose it"). Work a little harder or a few minutes longer on a task that you do not like. People who persisted despite handicaps and disabilities Beethoven (composer) - was deaf Ray Charles (musician) - is blind Thomas Edison (inventor) - had a learning problem Albert Einstein (scientist) - had a learning disability Terry Fox (runner) - is an amputee with cancer Stevie Wonder (musician) - is blind Helen Keller (author) - was deaf and blind Marlee Matlin (actress) - is deaf Franklin D. Roosevelt (president) - was paralysed from polio Vincent Van Gogh (artist) - was mentally ill Woodrow Wilson (president) - had a learning problem Itzhak Perlman (concert violinist) - was paralysed from the waist down Stephen Hawking (physicist) - had Lou Gehrig's disease (of the nervous system) THINKING SKILLS AND USING OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS An important goal for teachers is to teach students the skills they need to be critical thinkers. Instead of simply memorizing facts and ideas, children need to engage in higher levels of thinking to reach their fullest potential. Working on Higher Order Thinking (HOT) skills outside of school will give children the tools that they need to understand, infer, connect, categorise, synthesize, evaluate and apply the information they know to find solutions to new and existing problems. Families can play an important role in encouraging higher order thinking with their children, even when having a casual conversation. Asking open-ended questions that don’t have one “right” answer gives children confidence to respond in creative ways without being afraid of being “wrong”. After reading a book together, ask your child questions such as, “If you were that character, how would you have persuaded John to turn himself in?” rather than something like, “What was the main character’s name in the book?” Below are more examples of questions to ask your child to encourage discussion, make them think critically and encourage higher order thinking. When reading a book: “What do you think might happen next?” “Does this remind you of anything from your life?” “Can you tell me about what you read today?” “Why did he/she act that way?” “What does he/she feel? How do you know?” Back When visiting an unfamiliar place: “How is __________ similar to/different from __________?” “Can you explain/show me that in another way?” When making an important decision: “How would you rank __________?” “How do you imagine __________ would look?” “What do you think a solution might be?” “Why did you decide to choose __________ over __________?” Try asking your child these questions at home and in a variety of settings. Be prepared to respond to your child’s answers with even more thought -provoking questions to continue to encourage higher levels of thinking and also open up the lines of communication between you and your child! Enjoy questioning! NAPLAN This term our Years 3 and 5 children will sit for the NAPLAN tests in the areas of English and Maths. All students have been completing a range of learning activities which will ensure they are very well prepared to sit for the tests. It is also important to provide students with a level of confidence that assures them that they are capable and ready to complete all challenges. Mrs Wale Coach Student News From Joden 3CL On Wednesday I did my very first Jazz solo at "Get The Beat" Tweed Heads. It was so much fun. I came 2nd place. Got a trophy for it being my first solo and a medal for coming 2nd. I love to dance, it's awesome!! Back P&C NEWS Congratulations to the students and staff who represented the School at the Anzac Day march and ceremony. I think next year we’ll need to get some extra shade cover for the choir though! Next week will be the annual Mother’s Day stall. It’s an opportunity for students to select a small gift up to $10.00 for that special ‘mum’ in their life- who ever that may be. I know in my family there is a lot of excitement about keeping this a secret until Mothers Day. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not! Not every student is able to afford to get their Mum something. So this year I’d like to encourage you to “Pay it Forward” if you are able. As well as sending your own child with their gift money, consider putting some in an envelope for another child. Address the envelope to Josh the Chaplain and leave it at the office. Josh will make sure it gets to children who wouldn’t otherwise be able to get their mum that little secret something. In addition to these small gifts, don’t forget the new 2015/ 2016 Entertainment book is another gift idea. Burleigh Heads State School P&C are excited to be offering families the Entertainment Books and Memberships this year as a fundraiser. Entertainment Books are filled with many buy one get one free offers, or 25% off discounts. There is over $20,000 of value in each book! This year families have the opportunity to purchase the traditional book – or the brand new digital membership. Which is the whole book downloaded to your smart phone instantly. To purchase your copy or digital version downloaded straight to your smart phone then please go online at: www.entbook.com.au/1m45734 Books can be collected from our school tuckshop and 20% of each membership sold contributes to our P&C fundraising so thank you for your support! Both contribute to raising funds for the school and student’s needs. The school is growing- in reputation as a great school and in numbers because it is a great school. This means that more resources are needed, computers for the computer room so everyone has access and many other practical things, small and large. Lets think of ways we can best support the students, staff and school to go from strength to strength! Marcia Dwonczyk P&C President SAKG NEWS This week in the kitchen we are using our abundant harvest of eggplants to make Eggplant Patties, Babaghnoush with garden crudités, Potato and Rosemary Pizza and ANZAC biscuits to acknowledge ANZAC day. We are also making a little surprise for Mother’s day in the kitchen. Something a little different; we hope you like it. In the garden we are enjoying the break from the heat and are taking the opportunity to plant lots of seedlings and seeds straight into the garden. Late last week we made Rosemary Wreaths for ANZAC day and the children learnt about the significance of Rosemary with remembrance and Gallipoli. The largest eggplant harvested last week weighed a whopping 1.2kg. I think that will make a couple of batches of Babaghnoush. The final Community garden workshop will be held this Saturday in the garden from 4pm. All those who are keen to see a Community Garden in Burleigh Heads should come along. It’s a great opportunity to meet other people interested in gardening.
