BURPENGARY NEWSFLASH WEEKLY NEWSLETTER OF BURPENGARY STATE SCHOOL Website: www.burpengass.eq.edu.au http://www.facebook.com/groups/burpengarystateschool/ School Student Absence Line to leave message details: Phone 3491 0366 Number 11 24 April 2015 Dear Parents / Caregivers, Thank you to the whole school community for the committed observance of such an important historical and cultural milestone of the Centenary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli. The Centenary has captured the imagination of our students, some of whom have gone that extra step in spending their own personal time researching our very own World War 1 veterans who actually attended Burpengary State School in the 1890’s. They were acknowledged today in a special tribute: Anthony Bourke; Sidney Bourke; Alexander Gall; Frederick Gall (Killed in Action); David Uhlmann and John Uhlmann (Wounded in Action). Thanks to Mr Scott Bowden for his organization of the ceremony, our special guests Mr Ken Steckelbruck (Deception Bay RSL); Mrs Michelle Carter (P&C Vice-President); Councillor Peter Arnold (MBRC); Warrant Officer Phillip Aberle (RAAF); Mr Duncan Armstead (War Veteran); Mr John Foxwell (War Veteran) and Master Nick (ex-BSS student and Bugler). Thanks also to Mr Ross Tattersall, Mrs Tamara Jones and Mrs Janine Kay (and Michelle Carter’s specialty cake) for the fantastic morning tea that followed for our guests. In further ANZAC Day news, Aidan was part of an Australia wide project to commemorate the graves of every Australian Serviceman who died in the First World War. Our assigned war hero was Trooper Cecil James Marson, Gallipoli, who lies in Quinn's Post Cemetery, Grave Reference: Special Memorial 46. Our cross, with the message from Aidan, along with a poppy and Australian flag, will be placed on his grave. The person who will represent our school and who will place the cross on our behalf is Maddison, a Year 11 girl from Matthew Flinders Anglican College, on the Sunshine Coast. Maddison will be commemorating our service person on Monday 27th April. Photos of our cross placed on the grave or memorial will be available th for viewing On Tuesday 28 April, at: • The Premier’s Anzac Prize website http://www.education.qld.gov.au/students/grants/scholarships/anzac/index.html • The Australian War Memorial Commemorative Crosses Flickr site https://www.flickr.com/photos/australianwarmemorial/sets/72157644424267093/ A handy ANZAC Day tip: Descendants may wear the medals of deceased recipients on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. The medals must be attached above the right breast. I take the opportunity to remind and encourage families to get behind the very first local Burpengary Community ANZAC Day March on ANZAC Day itself – Saturday April 25. Our staff and students will sign in and assemble at 9.15am in the Coles Carpark, and form up at 9.45am for the March that will commence at 10.00am. Burpengary State School has been awarded the privilege of being the lead school for the March, and I encourage a huge turn out to do justice to the Centenary of the amazing sacrifices made by the original ANZACs. Students will march and then form a Guard of Honour on Progress Road (near the new Memorial) for a March Past of the local War Veterans, before being dismissed after the March at about 10.20am from Progress Road. An optional Memorial Service will follow at 10.30am at the new Burpengary Memorial site. A big congratulations to Jorja for her recent selection in the U/13 Queensland State Soccer Team. Jorja is only aged 11 years, however, through hard work and commitment she has been selected in the Queensland U/13 team. She will compete at the National Youth Championships in Coffs Harbour from Monday 6th July to Friday 10th July. Best wishes, Jorja!! Notice is given that the next P&C Meeting will be a special meeting to validate a new P&C Constitution, and will be held in the Staff lounge on Monday night, May 11, commencing at the special time of 6.45pm. This change is essential for all Queensland State School P&C’s to adopt a new Constitution in order to accommodate School Council elections for Independent Public Schools. The usual May General Meeting will follow at 7.00pm. We are proud to announce that the Totally Wild story "Food Revolution Day – Garden & Kitchen" featuring our Burpengary th State School students in Year 2, 5 and 6 will be going to air on Tuesday 12 May 2015 at 8:00am on Channel Eleven. After this episode goes to air, it will then be available to watch online. Just visit the website - http://tenplay.com.au/channel-eleven/totally-wild Channel 10 informs us that if you “like” their official Facebook page it will keep you up-to-date with all the TOTALLY WILD action at https://www.facebook.com/TotallyWild and feel free to share this link on social media so that your friends & family can also see the finished story. They thanked the school for our assistance in the development of this story. We hope you enjoy it! I ask parents to be particularly conscious of the following two safety issues around our school: A large number of our parents are crossing Station Road at Leah Street again, when there is a traffic light control a short walk down the street. The message that you are covertly sending to your children is that it is OK to break rules and place yourself at risk, because for sure when they are on their own and independent (in not too many years) they are going to live those same values. Are the extra minutes saved a good trade for your child’s life in an accident? Likewise, illegal parking on footpaths and yards around George Street impairs vision, over-crowds roads and creates hazards for pedestrians and motorists alike, as well as being completely inconsiderate of our neighbours. Safety around our school is everybody’s business every day. Internet safety Tip for Parents: Why Snapcash is the most dangerous thing since Snapchat: The popular social media and communication app SnapChat last year released a facility within the app that allows users to forward and receive money with the tap of a button. Many other companies provide facilities to transfer money, however this one specifically works within the SnapChat app which is enormously popular with children and teenagers. This app, like many others of its type, has no CRICOS Provider No.: 00608A moderation, monitoring or identity verification. Not a sound environment to be dealing with money back and forth. It’s a program designed for social networking, not finance. To read the full article regarding functionality, advice to parents and to watch the 'SnapCash' promotional video visit: www.internetsafefamilies.com To other news… 1. The regular May general meeting will follow, commencing at 7.00pm. All Welcome. The next Parent-Admin Chat Meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 12, commencing at 9.30am in the Staff Lounge. 4. Library News: Welcome back to Term 2 where the cooler weather means we have a great excuse to snuggle up with a good book. Please remind your children to bring back their library books as they were all overdue on Monday. Term 2 means that Year 5 students may now start borrowing two books and we have had many students enthusiastically take up this opportunity already. Prep students are welcome to come into the library and borrow before school if they are accompanied by their parents or caregiver. They will need to find their own browsing card and choose a book from the area they normally borrow from with their class. Please note they cannot borrow on their borrowing day or on a Tuesday when the Junior Library is closed before school. In the library, we encourage students to read widely and we try to recommend authors and series they may enjoy. We particularly like to encourage them to read across genres. This includes Adventure, Humour, Fantasy and Historical Fiction. Once they get to know authors that write in a particular genre they like, they start to become much more self-sufficient in finding books they will enjoy. For those that enjoy reading information books, we remind them to look for the Dewey number to help them locate the subjects they find interesting. Scholastic Book Club - The current brochures have been given to students during the week. We regret that we are unable to accept cash payments for Book Club orders. Payments need to be made by credit card or cheque only. If paying by credit card, follow the instructions at the bottom of the order form. If paying by cheque, please make cheques payable to Scholastic Australia . Orders are due in no later than 9.00am on Tuesday 5 May, 2015. 5. Lost - If any student knows the whereabouts of a FIFA Game Soccer Ball, lost on the last Tuesday of school last term, with the name ‘Rylan Lyndon’ on it, please return it to the School Office. 6. Talent Quest News - Dust off your dancing shoes and tune those vocal chords. It’s that time we’ve all been waiting for…yes, the Talent Quest is back! There are categories for both junior and senior students. If you would like to take part in this year’s auditions, nominations will be taken in coming weeks. If you can sing, dance, be a magician or anything else that’s entertaining, here’s your chance! Items should be strictly no longer than 2 minutes and will be monitored to ensure appropriate content is performed. More information will be available soon, but until then…get practising! 7.
