Sharon Randall Cario Comets’ Showcase and Celebrations: On April 22nd, Cario hosted their second annual Health and Wellness Fair, featuring a student dodgeball tournament. Twenty local venders in the health and wellness industry were present, providing information to students, faculty, and community members. The student dodgeball tournament featured over 100 Cario students. The winning team in 6th grade was The Dream Team, featuring Jake McQuaid, William Leonard, Brian Leonard, Spencer Quinn, Michael Petry, and William Hepner. The 7th grade championship team, Spicy Walrus, featured Eli Botos, Nicholas Fiorillo, David Kenis, Harrison Ray, and Jack Van Vliet. The 8th grade champions, Wolfgang, featured Reid Clifton, Andrew Reamer, Cade O’Reilly, Luke Pauldine, and Zach Smith A special thank you to parent volunteer, Natalie Gresh, who was instrumental in securing the vendors and played a huge part in the vision and execution of this wonderful event! 7th grade ELA teachers and students are organizing a fundraiser on May 9th from 10:00-2:00 – THIS COMING SATURDAY. The fundraiser will benefit the nonprofit organization The HALO foundation. The mission of HALOS is to provide support and advocacy for abused and neglected children and kinship caregivers. Cario students will be holding a bazaar on May 9th under the awning by the afternoon car rider line beside the gym parking lot. Here they will be selling crafts, baked goods, books, small items, works of art and musical performances. Donations needed at the door include car-seats, diapers, wipes, Walmart gift cards, toiletries, gifts, and other helpful items. HALOS Fundraiser Where: Cario Middle School When: 5/9 from 10:00-2:00 Events: Student led bazaar featuring goods for purchase. Also a jump castle for kids to play. This all stems from a Cario student, Chap Hodges, winning an essay contest designed to persuade the Mt. Pleasant community to support a local non-profit. We are very proud of Chap and his efforts. We hope ALL of you are able to stop by Cario this coming Saturday to support this important effort! This year was the first year of the middle school Quiz Bowl. Cario Social Studies teacher, Eric Baker, was instrumental in bringing this opportunity to local middle schools. Cario students finished second among all schools in the tournament for the entire year that consisted of teams from Cario, Buist, Moultrie, and Laing. Cario hosted the pre-season tournament on December 10, with other schools hosting the regular season events. Cario’s team consisted of students Bohan Wang, Kevin Phan, Drew Marx, Hannah Ward, Stephen Hilton, Harrison Paul, Lauren Forni, and Parker Owens. A big thank you to Mr. Baker and all the other Cario teachers and administrators who helped with these events! Congratulations to the Cario Chess Team! On Saturday, April 18th, Cario’s chess players competed in a tournament at Belle Hall Elementary. This was their last tournament of an extremely successful year. Great job representing Cario so well girls! Ms. Jenna Rampetsreiter is a new teacher at Cario, in our Special Education Department. She loves working with middle level children. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison - Go Bucky! In her free time she enjoys traveling, drawing and painting, trying new foods and cultures, snowboarding, and adventures. She loves spending time with her family and friends, and is so excited to be part of the Cario faculty. 3 | Thomas C. Cario Middle School Recently, Cario 8th graders were recognized for their excellence in public speaking in ELA classes. These students were then asked to try out to be one of the student speakers at the 8th grade Moving Up Ceremony. Cario Middle School Cario teachers and administrators competed this past Saturday in the CCSD Superintendent’s Cup Tennis Tournament - winning their division. The annual event, which was started by former superintendent Nancy McGinley, is intended to raise awareness of the benefits of being active. Teams from nearly every school in the district competed for fun and prizes. Cario’s team, which is believed to be the first ever to compete in the tournament, included teachers John Allen, Dana Anderson, Kellie Carpen, and Bob Lang, as well as administrators Evandro Valente and Bryan Coleman. Great job Cario! Ms. Brooks nominated for SC DHEC’s Outstanding School Recycling Program! The physical education department began their annual Olympics competition at the beginning of the fourth quarter. This is the traditional time for this exciting competition and provides a wonderful conclusion to the physical education year! This year's theme is "French speaking countries that are not France." Coach Hamil, Coach Gratzmiller and Coach Maguire collaborated with Mrs. Gomez to select Belgium, Switzerland and Madagascar as the teams competing. Congratulations to advanced artist Samantha Castiller for placing FIRST for the 8th consecutive year in the Mt. Pleasant Waterworks poster competition. She will receive a cash prize of $4,100 and a certificate at the awards ceremony next month. The Outstanding School Recycling award is given to a school that has developed a successful recycling program and excels at material collection as well as student and school involvement. The award winners and nominees will be recognized at the Take Action Today workshop in June. 5 | Thomas C. Cario Middle School Congratulations to Cario’s 6th grade chorus for receiving straight SUPERIOR ratings at the 2015 Carowinds Music Festival on April 24th. Congratulations to the Cario band for another exciting competition season filled with accolades and affirmations. Cario placed 22 students in the S.C. All State Band, more than any other school in S.C. for the 14th consecutive year! Cario Band received straight superior ratings for the 15th consecutive year at the South Carolina Concert Festival on March 26th. Both the 7th and Symphonic bands received the highest ratings! Cario band placed 2nd (7th grade band) and 1st (symphonic band) at the All American Music Festival in Orlando, FL on April 11th. The Cario band also won grand champion for both the middle school and high school divisions! Cario Middle School The Cario beginner band received straight superior ratings at the Carowinds Music Festival on April 24th. It was the beginning band’s 15th consecutive year receiving the highest ratings! Cario band won the S.C. Outstanding Performance Award with a perfect score for the 15th consecutive year! Hannah Morgan, Cario band 8th grade flautist, won the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League’s summer scholarship for middle school music and will attend a summer music camp with the funding! Cario had multiple students place in the areas of visual arts, creative writing, and multimedia (shown to left). This projects stems from a novel student of The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen to learn about the Holocaust. Ms. Wamsley’s students were inspired to take part in this heartfelt competition.
