European Wars Tour – Spring and Summer 2016 If you enjoy learning about the First and Second World Wars, consider participating in a spring-time European tour of the major battle sites of both wars. The tour begins in Paris, and then continues on to Normandy and Omaha Beach, part of the D-Day invasion. You will visit the Ardennes, where major battles of both wars occurred. Next, is Nuremberg, Hitler’s favorite place for huge Nazi Party rallies and where the Allies brought many Nazi leaders to justice. Buchenwald Concentration Camp, one of the first and largest camps in Germany, is also a destination stop. The tour will end in Berlin, and you will see the Reichstag, Wannsee Villa (where the Final Solution was agreed upon), the Holocaust Memorial, Sanssouci Palace, and more. You will also get to sit at the same table as Truman, Churchill, and Stalin as they decided Europe’s postwar fate during the Potsdam Conference. The tour is organized by ACIS tours and will be led by Jeff Johnston. Mr. Johnston is licensed to teach German and social studies, and this will be his fifth trip with students to Europe. If you would like more information about this great educational opportunity, please contact him directly. Counselors are rounding up guidance for the end of the year, trying to get your students all the pertinent information for finishing their school year and planning productivity for the summer! Here is what's coming in the spring for guidance and information: Incoming Freshman: On Wednesday, May 13, the Glencoe counselors will be presenting to current 8th grade students about what Glencoe has to offer. The topics cover three major areas: academics, personal/social, and career. From this, we discuss common issues/questions that come up and how to handle them, including different people and resources available through Glencoe. The goal is to get students and parents off on the right foot as you enter our school, and inform you of places to get help, if needed, along the way. Sophomores: In April, counselors will be going into Health classes for the second time to help students with their 10th grade Naviance activity. This will involve a brief presentation about career clusters, the career credit components, and what a resume is. Students will complete the Career Cluster Activity via Naviance, and at the end of the activity will use their results to complete their Career-Related Learning Experience (CRLE) Request form, which will give them a placement for this career credit requirement sometime during their Junior year based on career interests they state on the form. The second half of the activity will help students become familiar with what a resume is and build their own. They will attach this to their CRLE Request Form, both of which will be sent to the Chamber of Commerce. Juniors: At the tail-end of the school year, Juniors will have their last session of guidance from counselors in their US History classes. This will cover a lot of information regarding how to get setup for senior year, both academically and in terms of post-secondary planning. Topics covered will include Graduation Requirement checks, Community Service and Internships, College and Scholarship Applications (including instructions for using Naviance for both), Letters of Recommendation and Brag Sheets. Students will complete a fillable brag sheet so they understand the purpose and process. CRIMSON TIDE Glencoe High School’s greenhouse program is celebrating their 18th plant sale.
