FFA Nursery and Landscape Team—1st Place State Winners
On March 7, Kathleen FFA’s Nursery and
Landscape team won the state contest in
Apopka. There were 25 high school teams
competing. The team members are Taeler
Dupre, Emmett Lee, Brevyn Foreman, and Madeline
Creasman. They will represent Florida at the National
FFA Nursery and Landscape CDE in Louisville, Kentucky next October. “The event was challenging and
consisted of identification practicums in which students
had to identify 30 ornamental plants from a 100 plant
list, 15 pests/disorders out of a 70 item list, and identify
15 tools out of a 100 item list. In addition to identification, there were four other events: Landscape Plan Interpretation, Pruning, Dealing with Hazardous Situations/Safety, and Equipment Maintenance,” said Mr.
Carlton.

In Celebration of National FFA Week our Ag students put
together an educational Farm Day for approximately 100
kindergarteners on March 27. After weeks of student and
advisor planning, the kindergarteners arrived at approximately
9:00 a.m. and started their educational tour at KHS of demonstrations that included a petting zoo, homemade ice cream
making station, hatching chicks,
clipping cattle, reptiles, aquaculture,
zebus and a hay ride. “Everyone had
a great time. It was an exciting opportunity for our students to be able to
share the importance of agriculture with our future generations,
said Mrs. Morse!”

Where On Earth Are We?
Mr. Bartuska’s Earth-Space Science classes experienced a hands-on opportunity recently while using
real Surveying Equipment. The exercise was an introduction to Differential Leveling, a basic Surveying
operation that acquires elevation data for plotting and
creating topographic maps. The new Surveying instruments were purchased by a Horace Mann/Grant
via Mr. Bartuska. “I plan to write a follow-on grant to
purchase a higher level of Survey instrument to allow
students to make additional and more complex
