Principal’s Message
I hope everyone enjoyed Spring Break with your families. There has
been a lot going on at Ladysmith Intermediate the past little while,
please do take some time to come to the school and walk through the
halls to see all of the wonderful work the children are producing. I
would like to thank our teachers, educational assistants, and other
support staff and school volunteers for their excellent work this
school year and a huge congratulations to all of our students for
making huge progress in their learning.
Thanks, as always, to members of our PAC for their continued
contributions to the school. Your help and assistance is appreciated
by the staff and students.

The Ministry of Education has
once again asked students and
parents of Grades 4, and staff to
complete the “Satisfaction Survey”.
The survey takes about 5 to 10
minutes to complete and is
available at
www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey/
access.htm. Passwords to log in
were sent home with all Grade 4
students. If you are a parent of a
Grade 4 student, and did not
receive the Satisfaction Survey

Erase Bullying

BookFest 2015 is taking place Saturday, May
2nd in downtown Nanaimo. The hub of
activity will be in the Diana Krall Plaza, while
the presenter sessions are held in
the Vancouver Island Conference
Centre and the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s Art
Lab. Free Pre-school sessions will be held in
the Nanaimo Museum and are available for
children under 5 with an accompanying
adult.
Absences or Lates
If your child is absent or late for school please
phone the school as early as possible to notify
the office (and preferably before 8 AM). The
school office does have a 24 hour voice mail
and you can leave a message stating your
name, your child’s name, grade and teacher.
This will avoid the phone call from the office to
you in the morning, as well as help us to ensure
all students are accounted for as quickly as
possible. On the topic of lates, please ensure
your child arrives to school by 8:45 am. Being
late to class can impact your child’s day as
critical information (ie: shape of the day) is
covered early on, as are the morning
announcements. Being late can also cause
distractions for students and staff.

Late French Immersion
École Quarterway School
To all interested grade 5 families. Quarterway School is still
accepting registrations to its September 2015 Late French
Immersion Grade 6 Program. Parents can register until June
30th. Please contact Quarterway School for more

Lost and Found
Just a reminder for students and parents to please check the
Lost and Found Box for any missing items. It is full and all
unclaimed clothing will be removed for donation prior to the
end of the month. On this note we would also encourage
parents to write student names (especially last names) on
items such as jackets that seem to be forgotten from time to
time.

Consultation on a new Three-Year
Local School Calendar
On March 18, 2015, the Board of Education directed staff to begin a 30-day consultation on the five
recommendations created by the Nanaimo Ladysmith School Calendar Committee.
1. To extend the three-year local school calendar to the 2017-18 school year
2. To implement elementary school local schedule guidelines
3. To implement secondary school local schedule guidelines
4. To increase Spring Break to two weeks
5. To remove a non-instructional day (the District Implementation Day), and replace with an instructional
day

FSA Results are now available
The Foundation Skills Assessment 2014-15 were completed by Grade 4 and 7 students. They have been all
marked and returned to the school, and were sent home with your child on March 18th. If you have any questions
about how to read the results of the FSA for your child, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would be happy to
go through them with you.

Nanaimo Law Day
Every April the Nanaimo Bar Association hosts an event at the Nanaimo court house called Law Day. This
year Law Day is being held on Saturday, April 18th. It's an event packed with activities, demonstrations
and displays for kids of all ages and anyone else who is interested in the justice system. Some of the events
and demonstrations include a fairytale mock trial with a real judge: Regina versus Big bad Wolf, and the
RCMP K-9 and vision impaired goggles and breathalyzer demonstrations. Also the Justice Education Society
of BC will have information available about their law courts education program and educational resources
including their new CybersafeBC online workshop for kids between 10-15 there.
Jump Rope for Heart
On March 13th, all classes participated in our annual Jump
Rope for Heart event. Students jumped rope in support of the
Heart and Stroke Foundation’s program to promote healthy
hearts through physical activity. Thank you to Ms. Needham
for organizing the event! We raised over $4000.00!!!
Eric Walters- Author Visit
Thank you to our PAC for supporting us to bring Eric Walters to
LIS. His presentation engaged our students and staff. Now we all
have the reading and writing bug. Parents, please keep reading to
your children. The more we share our love of reading, the more
opportunities there will be for our children.

*Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…..Do It!*
Raising healthy kids is tough! MEND is here to help! Are you
interested in learning more about nutrition and activity in a
family friendly FUN environment? Join us for our next session
of MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do It!) start Saturday
April 11th. This amazing program is FREE for families to
attend!
MEND is a fun, 9 week program for families with 7-13 year
olds. The program supports families to live a healthy lifestyle.
Groups of up to 15 children, accompanied by at least one
parent or caregiver meet with program leaders twice a week
for nine weeks. The first hour is an interactive family session
on nutrition topics, followed by one hour of fun games based
activities for the children, while parents and caregivers meet
for support and discussion on topics such as goals and
rewards, label reading and problem solving.Weekly sessions
will take place Saturdays from 10:30am-12:30pm and
Mondays from 5-7pm. All sessions take place at Oliver
Woods Community Centre. Pre-registration is required.
Participating families who attend at least 80% of all sessions
will receive a FREE 3 month City of Nanaimo Rec Pass for
the entire family to be active together! For more information

Assembly / Report Cards
The LIS Honour Roll assembly was well attended by parents
and family. Many students received attendance awards,
honour roll awards, Principal`s List awards and Tiger
awards. Congratulations to all of our spectacular students.
Thank you to Mrs. Harris’ Grade 4/5 class for entertaining
us with two fabulous Hul'qumi'num songs during our
assembly.
The second report card was on handed out on March 18th.
