PARK PROJECT
UPDATES
Two New Neighbourhood Playgrounds Through the VIP Program
Participants from the Volunteers in Parks Program have been busy upgrading existing neighbourhood parks. This fall has seen two major
park improvements. The first is for Hawthorne Park. The playgrounds, swing and play apparatus are in with landscaping happening in the
spring. Groveland Park will have playground equipment installed on November 14. This park will also include a multi-purpose hard surface
area for basketball and other sports and games. Thanks for the many volunteers who have made these projects possible.
Groveland Park
Bowen Park Tennis
Court Upgrades
During the summer, both sets of courts at
Bowen Park got a face lift. The upper courts
got re-painted, while the lower courts
are getting a complete re-haul, including
surfacing and fencing. The lower courts
should be open to the public again once the
weather allows for the painting of the lines.
In the meantime, visit the upper courts
which are ready for play right now!
Hawthorne Park
Italian Fountain
Upgrades
The Italian Fountain, a landmark in the City
of since 1961, underwent repairs as part
of phased improvements to the structure,
including:
• Mechanical system upgrades
• Upgrades to the electrical kiosk and
system for current operation & future
consideration of the lighting and pumps
• Repair of the structure of the fountain
to repair minor leaks & major aesthetic
issues
Artificial Turf Gets
“Dressed”
The Second Artificial Turf Field at Beban Park
was top-dressed with 40,000 lbs of crumb
rubber raising the amount of rubber in the
field another ¼ inch. This helps the synthetic
fibre stand erect and allows the field to play
true to real grass.
ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES
Updates
The Salmon are
Coming to the Bowen
Park Side Channel!
This 800 metre long side channel creates
habitat for coho salmon. It bypasses
a series of waterfalls in Bowen Park
allowing fish to reach productive
spawning and rearing habitat above
the falls. The side channel enables fish
to migrate and spawn in the upper
watershed and tributaries of the
Millstone Watershed.
November and December is a great time
to see salmon the channel and learn
more about their life cycle by reading
the interpretive signage found along the
trails.
Woodstove
Changeout Program
The City of Nanaimo, in partnership
with the RDN and the Province of BC, is
offering a woodstove changeout program
where a $250 rebate is given to those
residents who change
out their existing wood
burning appliance to
a CSA compliant one.
For more information
on qualifying for
this rebate, please

Native Plant Salvage Pilot Program
Nanaimo is an ecologically diverse and wonderful place to reside. Protecting our natural
environment is one of the highest priorities in the City. As a result, the City of Nanaimo is
piloting a “Native Plant Salvage Program” coordinated through Environmental Services staff.
This stewardship program allows salvaging to take place on sites where access has been
granted by landowners/developers. It helps to
• Protect genetic, species and ecosystem diversity in our area
• Restore habitat for local wildlife
• Encourage the use of native plants in gardens and community projects
• Promote the preservation and restoration of environmentally significant areas
Membership and training is required in order to participate in this program. For more
information, contact Rob Lawrance at 250.755.7582 or [email protected].
