AGM was held on 4th Feb. Mrs Margaret
Weeks was voted in as Chairlady Mr Ian
Lambert as treasurer and Mrs Anne Jones as
Secretary, the committee is made up of Mrs
Beryl Howell Mr Peter Ballard and Mr Denis
Bannister. The Speaker for the evening was
Anne Crow who gave us an insight to the Fifth
Glo’ster Gazette, in March 1915, the Fifth
Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment, a
Territorial Force of volunteers, sailed to France
to take their place at the Western Front.
Seeking to raise the moral of his troops,
Lt.Col. J.H. Collett
launched the very first
British regimental trench journal. The Fifth
Glo’ster Gazette after a suggestion by Padre
G.F Helm. This Gazette gave men of all ranks
the opportunity to voice their feelings if they
so wished in a variety of forms. Anne showed
slides from the Gazette and read out some
very moving poetry. Copies of the Gazette
are in the Gloucester Museum and are
available for any one to view. The next
meeting is on 1st April with a talk on Victorian
School Log books these are very entertaining.
