Conference Information
Character, Culture and Values is an international conference to be hosted by Character
Scotland and partners in Glasgow on 15th and 16th June 2015. It will be the first event of its
kind in Scotland, designed to explore and build on the continuing global shift towards character
and values-based education.
There are many ‘Questions of Character’ to explore during this event: How do we learn to be
human, and why is this important? How do we empower people and communities to make the
most of their strengths and values? What are the roles of young people, parents, schools, youth
groups and employers in doing so, and how are their roles connected? Can these questions
help to create a more inclusive, just, sustainable and compassionate world?
This conference aims to provide a platform for wide-ranging and creative discussions focussing
on how we can best support young people to deal with the complexities of life, learning and
work in the 21st Century. Those in attendance during the event will unpick the concept of
character and values education and the idea that all of us have a role to play in working out
‘who we are’ and ‘who we become’.
Conference Aims
Learn how nurturing children and young people’s character - their values, skills and
attributes - can empower, aid transitions and improve outcomes.
Enhance connections between the people, organisations and policy agendas that are
pertinent to this cause.
Inspire fresh approaches by re-introducing the concept of character as a way of exploring
the relationships between individuals and society
Keynote Speakers
Dr Avis Glaze
Dr Avis Glaze is one of Canada’s outstanding educators and a recognized international leader
in education. From classroom teacher to superintendent of schools and director of education,
this award-winning educator has experience at all levels of the school system. Dr. Glaze is
a consummate capacity builder in teaching, Improving student achievement, leadership
development and school system improvement. She is skilled at motivating and inspiring
teachers, principals, system leaders, policy makers politicians, parents and business leaders to
realize their potential in improving their schools. Avis’ international contributions to education
was, once again, recently recognized when she received the Robert Owen Award, the first of its
kind offered in Scotland, from Michael Russell MSP.
Professor Marvin Berkowitz
Dr. Marvin W. Berkowitz is the inaugural Sanford N. McDonnell Endowed Professor of Character
Education, and Co-Director of the Center for Character and Citizenship at the University of
Missouri-St. Louis, and University of Missouri President’s Thomas Jefferson Professor. His
scholarly focus and expertise is in character education and development and he is the founding
co-editor of the Journal for Research in Character Education. Since 1999 Dr. Berkowitz has
directed the Leadership Academy in Character Education in St. Louis.
