THE ASCWU AND YOU
(THE STUDENT)
The Associated Students of Central
Washington University (ASCWU) Student Government elections are almost
upon us. With seven positions up for
grabs next year, the time is now to get
acquainted with student government
roles and responsibilities, especially if
you’re planning on running for office
next year.
CANDIDATES MUST
FILE BY APRIL 10
President
Responsibilities: The President serves as
chief spokesperson, gives the State of
the ASCWU Address in the spring and
represents the Associated Students in all
legislative issues, among other insanely
awesome duties.
In this position you need to have a lot
of self motivation to get things done.
Try to remain confident as well; you
can’t just freeze up when your moment
comes.
– Yosef Gamble, current President
Executive Vice President
Responsibilities: Provides a budget
forecast each fall, oversees committees
and appointments, and summarizes
monetary activity. This position also
chairs the Services and Activities (S&A)
committee, which proposes budget
levels for various S&A funded CWU
departments and organizations.
Be very familiar with day-to-day
operations that will allow the Student
Government to pursue long-term
strategies.
– Nick Shuey, current Executive Vice
President
Vice President for Clubs
& Organizations
Responsibilities: Handles recognition for
student groups and chairs the ASCWU
Club Senate. Also acts as liaison for
clubs and organizations as well as the
sports council, and manages insurance
policy for the ASCWU Student Government and subsidiary groups.
Have good time and task management
skills. Having the ability to prioritize
tasks and complete them in a timely
manner is necessary to being successful
as the V.P. for Clubs and Organizations.
– Phil Rush, current Vice President for
Clubs & Organizations
Vice President for Academic Affairs
Responsibilities: Serves as the primary
student resource for issues or concerns
regarding academics and acts as Chair
of the Student Academic Senate. Meets
semimonthly with the Provost and
reimburses money to individuals who
seek to learn outside of the classroom
through SAS funds.
Have issues you’re really passionate
about coming into this position and
have a goal and know how to accomplish it. You have the resources and
contacts with a lot of people, so use
them!
– Jennifer Treadway, current Vice
President for Academic Affairs
Vice President for Equity
and Community Affairs
Responsibilities: Serves as liaison to university equity, diversity and service task
forces, and leads community outreach.
Represents the ASCWU Student Government at Ellensburg city government and
community agency meetings.
You need strong initiative in this
position to succeed. Nobody is making
sure you’re doing what you need to do.
It takes being creative and finding new
ways to be efficient. Having a love for
everyone doesn’t hurt either.
– Spencer Biallas, current Vice President
for Equity and Community Affairs
Vice President for Student Life
and Facilities
Responsibilities: Chairs the Student
Union and Recreation Advisory boards,
attends all Resident Hall Association
(RHA) meetings in addition to overseeing general on and off-campus safety
and student concerns. This position is
responsible for the new Wildcat Statue,
and is Wellington the Wildcat’s boss!
Be overall creative and try to be a
people person. This position works well
when you know events on campus and
you’ve participated in them. For me, this
made the learning curve a lot easier and
allowed me to make a difference.
– Rob Lane, current Vice President
for Student Life and Facilities
Vice President for Legislative Affairs
Responsibilities: Provides programs
to increase political awareness and
organizes voter registration, as well as
attends legislative hearings in Olympia.
Chairs the CWU Washington Student
Association chapter and leads Student
Lobby Day – an exclusive day-trip to
Olympia for CWU students to lobby
their congress.
Be prepared for things to change unexpectedly, especially during legislative
meetings. This position requires you to
stay on your toes.
– Cassie DuBore, current Vice President
for Legislative Affairs
Now that you understand the ASCWU
Student Government positions and
how they operate, it’s up to you to
put yourself out there and run for
office. So what do you say, Wildcats –
are you up for the job?
AN INFORMED VOTER
IS A HAPPY VOTER
Hey you. Yes, you. Did you vote last
year? I’m not talking about the United
States elections; I’m talking about the
CWU elections here. I probably don’t
need to tell you how important voting
actually is, but I’m totally going to anyway. Time to drop some knowledge.
Voting is the best tool you have in
voicing your opinion. Not only do you
vote on the next group of Student
Government officers, but you also vote
on any ballot initiatives, such as new
fees. That’s right, YOU have the power
to accept them for what they are, or kick
‘em to the curb if you’re not a fan. The
important thing here is being informed.

WHAT SHOULD YOU
KNOW? ABC NEWS
CORRESPONDENT
JOHN QUIÑONES
COMING TO CWU
Broadcast news anchor and Emmy
Award winning journalist John
Quiñones is bringing his personal
story of triumph and vision of
success for Hispanics in the United
States to CWU. Quiñones’ speech,
“A 20/20 Vision on Hispanic America,” will convey how he overcame
the difficulties of growing up as the
child of migrant farm workers to
pursue his education and career.
Veronica Gomez-Vilchis, Center for
Diversity and Social Justice (CDSJ)
diversity officer, said that she’s
excited for the CWU and Ellensburg
communities to be able to meet
someone who is using the spotlight
for good.
“I’m hoping out of his speech
attendees will see the resilience
people with farm worker families
have, that desire to be better, to
take on leadership roles and to use
their education and profession to
be advocates for underrepresented
groups who don’t have a voice,”
Gomez-Vilchis said.
Quiñones will arrive on campus
earlier that day to meet with staff
and students before delivering his
speech, which will kick off CWU’s
celebration of Cesar Chavez/Dolores Huerta Week. CDSJ has scheduled events throughout the week
to pay tribute to Latin Americans’
historic struggles.

DE-GET-IT-ON AT
THE SPRING FITNESS
DECATHLON
The word “decathlon” is of Greek
origin and literally means 10 feats:
deca (ten) and athlon (feat). It should
come as no surprise then that the
Spring Fitness Decathlon, hosted
by University Recreation, consists
of 10 feats (five for both males and
females), including activities such as
a 500-meter dash and speed-ladder
competition, spread out over the
course of five weeks.
After decathletes register, they’ll
receive their decatha-swag (stay
tuned for more “decatha” jokes) – a
“Wildcat Fitness Decathlon” shirt.
And then the real fun begins.
Every Thursday afternoon, starting
the week of April 20, participants will
meet at the Recreation Center to start
that day’s events. With the help and
supervision of certified University
Recreation personal decatha-trainers
(told you), decathletes will receive
instructions and advice on how to
complete feats the best way possible.
Each event will be split into
“strength” and “conditioning” categories. Shayne Wittkopp, University
Recreation health coordinator, says
the reason behind splitting up
the two types is to ensure proper
decatha-rest (it’s rest times 10) and to
test the overall fitness of the participants, not just one area of skill.
Speaking of skill and fitness, this
particular decathlon features an
impressive list of off-the-wall events
to challenge even the most hardcore
of fitness gurus.
In the “Leonidas” half-mile,
decathletes will run laps around
the Recreation Center track and,
after each pass, will complete
another activity like push-ups or
sit-ups. A few other events will
include a standing vertical jump,
medicine ball throwing and dead
man’s hang.
“It will still be challenging, but
it’s also going to be a lot of fun,”
Wittkopp said. “It’s only as hard
as you make it.”
Male and female first-place decatha-winners (this one actually
makes sense) of each event will
be assigned a score of 10 points,
with the second-place winners
8 points, third-place 6 and so on
until fifth place. At the end of the
five-week excursion, the male
and female participants with
the most points will be crowned
Spring Fitness Decathlon champions.
Anyone is able to join and compete, and each challenge can be
completed at any pace. So suit
up, pump up and get ready for a
decathlon unlike any other.

GIVE A 5K FOR THE
WILDCAT DASH
Think you have what it takes to crawl
through mud, run through obstacles,
balance on a beam and climb a rope to
victory? For the fourth year in a row, University Recreation is hosting the Wildcat
Dash – a 5k on campus where runners
test their endurance while making their
way through an obstacle course.
Jordan Stinglen, CWU Intramural and
Special Events coordinator, says the
Wildcat Dash is a great way for students
to get together and celebrate fitness
with the community.
“Well, it’s awesome!” Stinglen exclaimed. “It’s going to be challenging
and tough, but it’s a great opportunity to
join in and have some fun as well.”
Participants who sign up for the 5k will
receive a free Wildcat Dash t-shirt to rep
on race day or enjoy anytime. The first
male and female to complete the 5k will
win a respected Intramural Champ shirt
and ultimate bragging rights.
Work it, make it, do it, makes us
harder, better, faster, stronger at the
Wildcat Dash 5k.

HEY, ELLENSBURG.
GET READY.
Your very own local music festival
is right around the corner. This
spring, musicians from around the
state will gather at The Elmira in
downtown Ellensburg for the third
annual “Burgstock” battle of the
bands, hosted by 88.1 The ‘Burg.
With higher production ambitions,
a pair of Sasquatch Music Festival
four-day passes to be raffled off
and more submissions than ever
before, Burgstock 2015 is locked,
stocked and ready to rock.
BIG. BIGGER.
BURGSTOCK!
“Bigger.”
That’s what KCWU-FM Brand
Manager Elena Larrabee had to
say about her expectations for this
year’s festival. “Our first year was
a trial run, last year we worked
on perfecting things and this year
will be bigger and better than
ever.”
Larrabee is working with The
‘Burg’s Music Director Tim
Mitchell to bring to reality a vision
for the battle that has the KCWU
family buzzing with excitement.
One of their passions is representation of local and regional
artists, with a push to offer bands
legitimate exposure.
“We’re trying really hard to reach
out to the local music scene,”
Mitchell said. “Already we’ve seen
representation from Snoqualmie,
Tri-Cities, Yakima and even from
Bellingham. It’s a good mix of
stuff that’s coming in. We want
to rake in all the good talent from
Washington state.”
WHO’S IN?
One of the goals of Burgstock is to
find and promote promising local
talent that may be lurking in hidden
bars or suburban basements, and
Mitchell wants to use the festival as
a means of exposure for these yet-tobe-discovered musicians.
“That stuff matters,” Mitchell added.
“A lot of the bands that are big today
started off doing small college tours
and playing small gigs.”
“Like doing battles for college radio!”
Larrabee enthusiastically added.
Selection for Burgstock is much like
an audition process. A team of volunteers from The ‘Burg’s staff evaluate
and judge two to three tracks of
original work from each band.
“We have a discussion and talk about
the artists we like and the ones we
think have potential,” said Mitchell.
“We come together as a station and
decide how we want to represent
local music in this festival.”
The six bands left standing, the
finalists, are the cream of the 2015
crop and will go head-to-head at
Burgstock on Saturday, May 16.
only a chance to record, but also to
work with people who really know
how to mix and master the right
way, people who know how to take
an idea and form it into a cohesive
piece of work.”
In addition to studio time at
Velvetone, the winning band of
Burgstock will also be awarded a
coveted spot at the 2016 Fisherman’s Village Music Festival, held in
downtown Everett and sponsored
by the Everett Music Initiative.
YOUR TOWN,
YOUR MUSIC FESTIVAL
Burgstock belongs to you: the fans,
the music-lovers and the very people who decide what becomes the
next big thing. Mitchell, Larrabee
and the rest of the staff at 88.1 The
‘Burg are excited for Burgstock and
what it could mean for the future
of the popular music scene.
“Our age group is the perfect demographic,” Mitchell said. “We’re
the next group to go out into the
world, and the music tastes that
we develop here, at this school, will
make a difference.”
IN IT TO WIN IT!
Last year’s winners received four
hours of hands-on, professionally
produced and mixed studio time at
Velvetone Records, and The ‘Burg
is offering the same deal again this
year.
“It’s a local tie-in,” Mitchell said
about the Ellensburg-based label.
“They recorded one of the Screaming Trees’ first albums. They played
a significant part in the big music
movement of the nineties, and
they’re right here in town. This is not

HELPING STUDENTS
WITH LIFE’S
UNSCRIPTED
SCENARIOS
ACT I
Scene 1
Three CWU students, Andrea, Kayla
and Leah, are standing in the kitchen
of their house in Timothy Park, near
campus. It’s morning, and Leah woke
up with an eye infection.
Kayla: So, I don’t mean for this to
sound mean, but you look awful. Not
like ‘when did you last wash your hair’
awful but awful like your eye is way red.
Andrea: Have you been sleeping in
your contacts again?
Leah: Yeah, I’ve had them in for a week
straight, and I meant to finally take
them out last night, but I was working
on my paper and I just totally passed
out. (Putting her face close to Kayla’s)
Do you think it looks infected?
Kayla: Ew, yes!
Leah: Well what am I supposed to do?!
My doctor at my parents’ is more than
an hour away.
Andrea: What are you talking about?
Go to the clinic on campus!
Leah: But we don’t live on campus
anymore, so I can’t just go in there.
Kayla: Yes you can. I think any student
can go there, and it’s free.
Andrea: Yeah, it’s always free to just
go in and get checked out. If you end
up needing medicine, which from
looking at your eye, which is gross,
sorry but it is, then they’ll write the
prescription and everything too.
Leah: I don’t get paid until the fifteenth though, so I can’t pay the copay
or anything right now.
Andrea: The last time I was there they
just put the charges on my account,
and then I just had to let my insurance
know and they took care of it.
Kayla: There. Problem solved. And,
I heard that starting fall the clinic is
going to start billing our insurance for
us, so we don’t have to do anything.
Leah: Seriously?
Kayla: That’s what Morgan said, you
know Morgan Green who works in
the clinic office? I saw her the other
day and she was all excited about
it. She said that they help students
without insurance sign up, too, so no
one has to walk around with nasty
red eyes.
Andrea: But, seriously. Aren’t you
supposed to do a presentation
tomorrow? I wouldn’t want to be
in front of my class looking like a
Cyclops.
Leah: I hadn’t thought about that!
Do you think I can get in today?
Andrea: You can almost always get
a same day appointment, especially
if you call right now. It’s only
nine-thirty.
Leah: Okay, I’ll go. Can I use your
phone? (Reaching for Kayla’s phone)
I forgot to charge mine last night.
Kayla: Yeah, but don’t hold it near
that scary eye of yours.
ACT II
Scene 1
Two CWU freshmen, Adam and
Steven, are in their dorm room in
Sparks Hall. Adam is lying in his bed,
while Steven stands in the doorway,
holding a basketball.
Steven: Hey, man. I’m going to go
shoot hoops if you wanted to come.
Adam: No thanks. I’m kind of tired.
Steven: Yeah, okay. I’ll see you later
then. (Turns to leave, but then turns
back) Are you okay? You haven’t
really done anything in like, I don’t
know, two weeks? Longer?
Adam: I’m fine. I told you I’m just
tired.
Steven: (Sitting down on his own
bed) Okay, dude, I know this is kind
of awkward to talk about, but I don’t
think you’re just tired.
Adam: What do you mean?
Steven: Anything, man. Being away
from home, school’s stressing you
out. Anything.
Adam: But isn’t depression, I don’t
know, serious?
Steven: Well yeah, but so is just lying
in your bed pretty much all day. I
don’t want to push you or anything,
but that’s not really you.
Adam: Okay. Well I’m not saying I
am, but if I was actually depressed,
what could I do about it? Go to the
doctor? Go see a shrink? I’m not
doing that.
Steven: You could just go to the
clinic on campus. No one would know
you’re going unless you wanted them
to know, it’s all totally private. And
it’s free.
Adam: It’s free? Seriously?
Steven: It’s free here for students to
go talk to one of the counselors, as
many times as you need to. I’m just
saying, man, it might help.
Adam: I think I would feel kind of
stupid. There’s nothing that wrong,
you know?
Steven: Dude, they’ll understand.
I’m sure they deal with really serious
stuff and people who are just in
weird funks. You could just try it?
Adam: All right, I’ll think about it. But
I don’t want them to call my parents.
Steven: They won’t do that. They can
only tell anyone if you give them permission. It would all just be between
you and whoever you talk to.
Adam: Okay. Well, I’ll go in tomorrow
I guess, after class. Just to check it
out.
Steven: You could probably go now,
or just call and see if you could go
later today.
Adam: Nah, I think I want to go shoot
hoops.
Steven: Are you sure?
Steven: I just… I think maybe you’re
kind of depressed.
Adam: Yeah, I’m sure. Like you said, I
haven’t played for a couple of weeks.
I guess I could use the practice.
Adam: Depressed about what?
