Using the Product
Edivate, the tool
Edivate is a professional learning platform that contains a library of instructional videos, a professional learning
community of 1.2 million teachers and a portfolio where teachers can track and earn credit for their learning.
During the onboarding process, teachers are asked to fill out a profile, including information such as their grade
level, content area and level of education. This information helps the system recommend appropriate and
relevant PD resources. When teachers log onto Edivate they see a navigation bar with a search bar and tabs
for resources, groups, help, messages and settings. The resources tab drops down offering multiple options
including: Videos, Learning Targets, Observation 360, Communities, LumiBook, User Video Uploader and more.
Video Repository
At the heart of Edivate is a content library with
over 2,500 on-demand instructional videos
covering 125 topics with examples from real
classrooms. Videos range on average from five
to 12 minutes.
Most videos have three reflection questions that
teachers can answer as they watch the video.
The platform sends teachers a second set of
three questions to answer via email 72 hours
after watching the video, so that teachers have
more time to reflect on the lessons they learned.
Teachers can track their response questions
and send them to a mentor or principal.
Administrators will automatically see that the
questions have been answered, and can pull a
report to show a single educator’s responses. In

some districts, this reflection is a requirement
when teachers wish to receive PD credits.
The collection features over 300 videos
focused on the Common Core that come with
Guidebooks. The Guidebook is a document that provides context for the video, offers a pre-viewing discussion
prompt, reflection questions and relevant resources (such as publications, blogs, other videos). These Common
Core-specific videos are designed to help teachers understand and implement the standards by giving them
concrete examples of real teachers targeting specific standards in the real classrooms. Each Common Core video
is tagged with a specific grade level and standard.

Using the Product (continued)
Almost all the videos are created by the School Improvement Network’s production teams (less than 2% of the
videos in the SIN library are partner content). Each teacher has been hand-picked and vetted by the content
development team at School Improvement Network. When they decide on a topic to videotape, the team
receives recommendations from partners and clients. If a recommended teacher is being considered, the
content development team goes out to observe and vet teachers before video-taping them for the library. The
video library is updated frequently and any outdated videos are removed.
The system makes video recommendations for each teacher-user based on various aspects of their profile.
When browsing, teachers can filter by grade level, subject, PD topic, presenter, program and release date.
Administrators and instructional coaches also have access to the video library and can share specific videos with
teachers.
Each video in the library has an icon for Information (“i”) which opens a pop-up with the total time of the video
and a brief overview of its content. There is also a
clock icon that allows a user to add the video to his/
her queue with one click. Once users have chosen a
video, they click the image and are taken to a screen
that includes the video, the reflection questions,
the guidebook, an audio version of the video, a
downloadable written transcript, and a lesson plan
if available. The bottom of the screen shows other
related videos.
In addition, the audio for each video can be
downloaded as an mp3 so that teachers can listen
to videos while they’re on the go. Schools can also
upload their own content for their teachers to view.
There is a PD 360 app (available on iOS and Android)
that allows teachers to watch videos or listen to audio
files on their mobile device. A teacher must have a

PD 360 account in order to use the app. Any video
watched in the PD 360 app will be recorded in a user’s viewing history on the web version of Edivate.
Groups and Communities
Edivation also facilitates collaboration between peers and across online PLCs. The Group Activity list gives an
up-to-the-moment feed of what’s going on in a teacher’s groups. Administrators can track discussions and share
content with teachers and colleagues. They can also share links, video segments, white papers and more with an
individual or group right from the content page. In addition, Edivation automatically recommends groups based
on user interests, geography, and educator role.
Teachers can engage with peers, coaches and instructional leaders to reflect on current instructional practice,
share new learnings and refine what happens in the classroom on a daily basis. It also allows instructional
leaders to assign, track and report on group members’ learning progress.

Teacher Evaluation: Survey Results
Respondents are surveyed on a single product. Each chart compares the responses on one teacher tool product to the
responses on similar teacher tool products, and to responses collected across a diverse range of products. Using the first chart
as an example, of the respondents we surveyed about Edivate, 19% had used ExitTicket more than once. Of respondents we
surveyed about a teacher tool (including Edivate), 7% had used that teacher tool more than once. Finally, of the respondents we
surveyed about an edtech product (across all categories), 11% had used that edtech product more than once.

Teacher Evaluation: Strengths
Convenient Access
Teachers appreciated the ability to access all of their PD needs in one place at any time.
“It seems to be easily accessible and having all those videos in one place is great. I also think having lesson
plans to go with the videos would definitely be a time-saver.”
TEACHER, PUBLIC MIDDLE SCHOOL
“I can find everything that I need in one location instead of needing to search through a thousand different
resources.”
SPANISH TEACHER, PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL
“The most appealing part of this product is that it can be accessed anywhere and anytime, which lets
teachers access the information and support they’re seeking at the very moment they need it.”
PRINCIPAL, PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Peer Examples
Educators liked being able to watch other teachers in action to get a sense of what works well in the classroom.
“This product gives teachers specific and searchable topics that we can know for sure are examples of strong
teaching.”
COACH, PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
“It allows me to peek into another school to get new ideas, see how others do my job and avoid common
pitfalls.”

Teacher Evaluation: Strengths (continued)
Teacher-Friendly
Educators cheered for Edivate’s teacher-friendly features, particularly its ability to tailor PD to individual teacher
needs.
“As an administrator, the number one complaint I hear from staff is lack of available time to search for tools
that assist in their own self reflection. This tool allows any teacher in any grade level search thousands of
topics that have direct relevance to the issues they are experiencing in their individual classrooms. This allows
them to absorb information, reflect on practices, and gain tools that will increase their instructional efficacy at
their own convenience.”
PRINCIPAL, PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
“Edivate is self-paced and individualized to each teacher’s strengths and weaknesses. Combine that with digital
content you can access anywhere and you’ve got a great product.”
TEACHER, PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL
“The product is easy to navigate. There is a chat room so users can collaborate with one another, and users
can pause the video to make comments and ask questions.”
SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER, PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
“What makes this tool so great is how it is specific to individual needs. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all PD system.”

Teacher Evaluation: Wants and Wishes
Cross-Section of Types of People in Videos
Some teachers suggested including more types of teachers in the videos to help PD learners relate.
“It would be nice to have videos with more diversity in the student body and the educators featured.”
SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER, PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
“I’d like to see the product address the needs of language learners more than they currently do through more
language support.”
ESOL/LITERACY TEACHER, PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
“I think it would be great to use more young teachers on the videos so young viewers can connect with them
and see what they have in common. I think that would make it easier to get young teachers to improve their
teaching skills.”
STAFF MEMBER, PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL
Expand Content Offering
Educators appreciated the wide breadth of content already available, but saw room to include more content
certain areas.
“I would like to see the early childhood and lower grade level resources expanded.”
KINDERGARTEN TEACHER, PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
“I’d be great to include some lessons in Spanish for dual language programs. I’d also like to see more videos
especially at the lower primary level.”
TEACHER, CHARTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
“It would be nice if they added more categories for students with special needs.”
