FROM THE PRINCIPAL
MOTHER’S DAY STALL
A huge thanks to all of our volunteers who ensured the P&C’s Mother’s Day Stall
was such a success. It is always exciting to watch the thrill of children as they
shop for presents for their Mothers.
I do hope that all mothers had a fantastic day and enjoyed the presents their children bought for them.
I would also like to mention that this week is Volunteer’s Week, and extend a
huge thankyou to our fabulous volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the
school.
PRINCIPAL PARENT FORUM
The next of our Principal/Parent Forums will be held this Thursday, 14th May at
2.30pm in the Function Room. This change of venue, hopefully, will allow for a
greater ease of access for our parent reps. This Thursday we will continue discussions with regard to the pre-prep program that we are looking to implement
from the beginning of Term 3.
NAPLAN
Today students in Year 3 and 5 commenced their National Assessment Program
Literacy and Numeracy tests. This program will continue Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
We ask that all parents and students in Years 3 and 5 do the best to ensure that
their children are at school each of these days. Please ensure that they have a
good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast.

NEW SIGN
We do hope that our new school sign will assist with communication with our Parents. We take the opportunity to thank the P&C for their assistance with this project as it assures that our old and quite unsafe sign has been replaced with
something more modern and user friendly.

YEAR 3/4 PLAYGROUND
I received a piece of persuasive writing from a group of Year 3 students yesterday seeking my support for a playground area for the year 3/4 children of our
school.
It is our hope that with support from the P&C, we are able to undertake the building of a new 3/4 playground in the near future. Naturally this will depend on the
level of support that our P&C association can provide. However, they are always
committed to undertake the best for our children. I look forward to sharing further
news of this project as it unpacks.

PBL (POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR AND LEARNING) MATTERS
The Value for this week is, “Acting Responsibly” with a focus on, “I follow the directions of
people who work in this school”. Learning to follow directions is an important life skill and at
Darling Heights State School we try to create a supportive positive environment that encourages cooperation between students and staff.
It is important for children to be able to follow instructions, so that they can function effectively
across different environments (e.g. home, school, when at the park or visiting a friend’s
house). If a child struggles with following instructions this impacts on their ability to reach the
desired ‘purpose’ or ‘outcome’ and thus complete tasks effectively.
Here are some tips that may improve children’s ability to follow instructions?
Eye contact: Get the child’s visual attention before giving them an instruction.
Single instructions: Give your child only one instruction at a time.
Simple language: Keep language simple and direct.
Break verbal instructions into parts: Instead of “Go and get your lunchbox and your hat
and go outside”, say “Get your lunchbox.” When the child has followed that instruction, say
“Now get your hat” then “OK, now you can go outside”.
Repeat: Get your child to repeat the instruction to ensure that they have understood what
they need to do (e.g. "Go and get your bag, then sit at the table. What do I want you to do?’).
‘First/Then’: Use this concept to help the child know what order they need to complete the
command (e.g. "First get your jacket, then put on your shoes").
Clarify: Encourage the child to ask for clarification if they forget part of the instruction or have
trouble understanding what they need to do. Encourage them to ask for the command to be
repeated or clarified (e.g. "Can you say that again please?").
Visual aids (e.g. pictures, gestures, body language and facial expression) can be used to assist the child’s comprehension and recall of the instruction.
Visual cues can often be very useful to help the child to follow longer instructions as it provides them with something to refer back to if they are having difficulty remembering what they
need to do. It also highlights the order in which they need to complete the instruction.
Activities that can help improve following instructions include:
Simon Says: Gradually increase the length of the command when playing this game (e.g.
"Simon Says pat your head"; "Simon says first pat your head, then touch your nose").
Robot game: Blindfold the ‘Robot’ (listener) so the child must listen very carefully to instructions to find something (e.g. go 3 steps forward, then 1 step to the right). This can be reversed so that the child has to give someone else the instructions.
Drawing games: Describe a picture that the child cannot see and they must try and draw a
similar picture from your verbal instructions. Compare the two pictures at the end. Use previously drawn background scenes (e.g. street scene, park scene, shelves of a cupboard, rooms
in a house).Take turns giving instructions about where to draw or stick on pictures of objects
or people (e.g. ‘put the plate on the second shelf’).
A special thanks to all parents who take the time each week to sit down and talk to their child/
ren about the week’s Value and Focus. If any parents have any queries or concerns or wish
to discuss anything, please feel free to contact Mr James Leach (Deputy Principal) on 46 368
333.

CENTRAL ZONE CROSS COUNTRY TRIALS
On Friday, the 8th May, students from Darling Heights competed in the Central Zone Cross Country Trials.
We had students participate in 2km and 3km runs.
Students trained hard during the lead up to the trials and I would like to commend their efforts on the day. A
big congratulations to Braydon Ford and Cienna Beveridge who came 1st and 5th respectively in their races
and will now represent Central Zone at the Darling Downs Cross Country Trials on the 26th May at Kearney
Springs!
Also, well done to Ky Richardson who has made the Darling Downs team for Football. What an achievement! Ky will compete at the QLD State Football Carnival in Brisbane later in the year.

HALL CARPARK
Those of you who travel along Wuth St would be aware of major works in front of the hall. What was a problematic area is now very attractive, and considerably more functional with over 20 new carparks.
DIGITAL SIGN
At 2.00pm on Friday the new sign lit up for the first time. Easily programmable messages via the internet
can be displayed in seconds. Literally hundreds of messages can be added, months in advance. If you
haven't had the chance, take a look.
VERY IMPRESSIVE!

MOTHER’S DAY STALL
CHORAL FANFARE
Don’t forget permission notes and
$2.50 are due to the
office by this Friday
15th May.
A huge thankyou to all the families of Darling Heights who supported the very successful Mother’s Day Stall last week. A special thank you to the teachers who brought their classes to the
stall. They were a pleasure to have at the stall and are a credit to
you.
We also acknowledge all the staff who supported us while preparing and running the stall. Lastly, none of this would have been
possible without the Mums, Grandmas, Siblings and other family
members who helped in some way to make the stall such a success. This includes those in our school community who donated
items to sell at our stall; those who donated their time and craftiness at our craft days and at home in making items; and those
who helped with the running of the stall as the children did their
shopping.
Thank you from the Darling Heights State School P&C Fundraising Group.
