Along with the warmer weather,
learning moves outdoors, and many
of our students have opportunities
for a variety of field trips and
extension activities. This month the
SDSS Outdoors Club will hike the
West Coast Trail, Senior PE students
will test their fitness in the annual
SDSS Triathlon, AP Psychology
students will participate in a study
at UBC, Art students will attend a
workshop on the Gulf Islands, and
our grade 8s will participate in a
Medieval Fair, to name but just a
few learning opportunities that lie
outside the regular school day. Last
month I, along with Ms. Macintosh
and Ms. Motohashi was able to
accompany 25 students to the
Bamfield Marine Science Centre on
the west coast of Vancouver Island.
What an incredible learning
experience! The students had the
opportunity to immerse themselves
in a research environment. I was
impressed by the application of
their knowledge and their active
engagement in the activities at the
Centre. This quick trip illustrated
powerful learning that extends
beyond the walls of the classroom!
Preparations are also underway for
year-end activities. On June 12th –
17th we will have an alternate bell
schedule. On each day, students
will attend two “long blocks” (2
hours and 15 minutes in length)
with a lunch break in between. In
many instances, these blocks will
allow for summative activities
including exams, presentations, or
portfolio assessments. The last day
of classes will be Thursday, June
18th, which will be a run through
of all eight classes.
Provincial Exams will be held
between June 19th – 24th. All
students should check the schedule
for final exams and plan
accordingly.
Spring also means that the
graduation season is upon us! Our
annual Grad/Dinner Dance will be
held on Friday, June 5th. The
festivities on the 5th will include a
Grad Walk and a Dry Grad after
party organized by the parents. To
facilitate the set up for Grad Walk
and to ensure a safe and orderly
dismissal, we will use an alternate
bell schedule on Friday, June 5th
with classes ending early and

dismissal occurring at 12:10pm. The Grad Walk will begin at 3pm at the west
end of the track. The Grad Walk is the precursor to the Grad Banquet and
Dance which will be held later that evening at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel in
downtown Vancouver. Following the dinner and dance, parents have organized
the Dry Grad celebrations to be held at the South Delta Recreation Centre.
Many thanks to the parents, volunteers, and donors who have spent many hours
to organize these events and ensure a special day for our graduating students.
On Wednesday, June 24th the Valedictory and Scholarship Ceremony will be
held at the South Delta Baptist Church. Information on the event, tickets, etc.
will be sent to parents via email later this month.
For our grade 12 students the graduation activities and the official end of their
public education are coming fast. For all students, the excitement of this time
of year is very evident.
We all need to be reminded, though, that there is still important work to do.
Students who are doing well need to continue to practice their good work
habits. Students who have been less diligent still have time to improve their
performance before the end of the year.
In closing, I’d like to thank the parents for their support and their continued
involvement in school life at South Delta Secondary. SDSS continues to be a
busy and vibrant school. Much credit belongs to a caring parent community.

South Delta Sun Devils
Athletics Update
Submitted by Mr. Sweeney
Athletic Director
Our spring sports teams at South Delta are in the midst of wrapping up league play and heading on to the Fraser Valley
Championships. Highlighting the way so far this spring is our junior rugby team who is undefeated in league and
tournament play this season. Led by the Baines brothers, this team has a great chance at winning South Delta's first
Fraser Valley banner in rugby in over thirty years. The senior girls soccer team has moved into the top ten in the
provincial rankings for the first time this season appearing at number 10 in the latest polls. They finished league play at
4-1 with a narrow 2-1 loss to Elgin Park who is the number 3 ranked team in the province. The SDSS badminton team,
sponsored by Mr. Pike and Mrs. Diomis, sent several athletes to the District and Fraser Valley Championships. Our track
and field athletes are preparing for the Valleys after several great performances at the district finals. After a few years of
absence, the SDSS tennis team has returned and shows great potential for the future under the watchful eye of Mr.
Pham. Finally, the SDSS golf team will be looking to earn a berth to the Provincial Championships for the first time in
several years as they tee it up at the Fraser Valleys.

“Legally Blonde: The Musical” is a fabulously fun and
international award-winning musical based on the adored
movie revised to be appropriate for ALL AGES. It follows the
transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes,
snobbery, and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. This actionpacked musical explodes on the stage with memorable songs
and dynamic dances. Equal parts hilarious and heart-warming,
the students of South Delta Secondary are excited to share
their energy and excitement over being true to yourself!

Appropriate Dress for School
SDSS recognizes the importance of teenage clothing styles. Nevertheless, increasingly,
students are not considering the appropriateness of the attire they wear to school.
During the warm weather in particular, girls and boys alike come to school wearing
clothing that is too revealing and informal. Students are choosing clothing that is suited
for the beach, not for school. When students wear revealing clothing, the faculty and
staff at SDSS find it very uncomfortable to work around them. We also know that many
students are uncomfortable being around their peers who are wearing revealing
clothing and it is distracting for other learners.
Delta School District is obligated to provide a safe and comfortable work environment for all its employees and a
suitable learning environment for our students. We are seeking your assistance to speak with your children about
the necessity of wearing work-appropriate clothing to school.
If you wish further clarification of this matter, please contact the school at 604-943-7407.
