“A SYMPHONY MUST BE LIKE THE WORLD.
IT MUST CONTAIN EVERYTHING.”
GUSTAV MAHLER
Experience the world through music. When you think about it,
this is a really wondrous thing. A composer sits down to write a
piece of music and what comes out is not merely his or her own
self-expression. Contained within that musical creation are the joys
and yearnings of an entire culture, as well as the conventions of the
time period within which the composer lived and worked.
Your SDSO brings you the world—significant moments from the
perspectives of people who have sought to give voice to their
world. In Mahler’s Sixth Symphony we hear his ideas and feelings:
a love letter to his wife, Alma, and his confusion and despair
over the diagnosis of his failing heart. Also within this music is
the language of turn-of-the-century Vienna, the collapse of the
Hapsburg Monarchy and the approach of the “war to end all wars.”
The result is powerful music expressing equally powerful ideas
and emotions.
Verdi’s Requiem, the operatic master’s only major work not written
for the stage, ravages the ear with sonic pictures of mankind’s
relationship to eternity. And while Beethoven’s music certainly
comes out of the specific time and place of early 19th-century
Germany and Austria, he wrote his music for the whole world and
for the ages; he desired to bring people together, to create harmony
literally and figuratively. Dvorak was the quintessential Czech
composer. His music is full of the melodies and rhythms of that
lively culture, but when he came to America he wanted to put his
experience of Native American and African American music into a
“New World” Symphony which fused his voice with ours, a truly
multicultural masterpiece.
We also bring you our world. This season marks the 20th
anniversary of our beloved concertmaster Doosook Kim. We take
this opportunity to celebrate her extraordinary musicianship and
all that she has given to make our world a better, more melodious
and harmonious place. The American Choral Directors Association
will invite several elite collegiate choirs from around the region
to form a massive Verdi event. Our own SDSO chorus will be
featured on no less than four of our programs during the season.
Add baroque, jazz, and contemporary music, and we have a
multifaceted world to experience.

“TRAGIC” SYMPHONY
October 3, 2015 7:30 PM
November 21, 2015 7:30 PM
The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra
returns to Mahler with a performance
of his “Tragic” Sixth Symphony. Mahler
biographer Henry-Louis de la Grange
describes the Sixth Symphony as “a
powerful statement of man’s defiance
against his destiny,” containing
“vigorous optimism.”
Composer Sumi Tonooka joins the
orchestra for a week-long residency
which culminates in a performance of
her jazz-inspired Full Circle. The New
York Times calls Tonooka “provocative
and compelling,” while the Jazz Times
depicts her as a “fierce, fascinating
composer and pianist.”
Mahler himself said of this work:
“What one puts into music is one’s
whole—feeling, thinking, breathing
and suffering—being.”
Principal violist Aaron Tubergen
brings to life a popular Romantic-era
programmatic work, Berlioz’s Harold
in Italy, which was inspired by
Lord Byron’s narrative poem Childe
Harold’s Pilgrimage.
