In ‘Run For The Angels’
The fifth annual Run for the Angels drew more than
500 supporters to Abacoa Town Center on March 7 to
benefit Bella’s Angels Inc., a local nonprofit for children
with life-long disabilities. Again this year, 12-year-old
Bella Cavallo, who was diagnosed with CHARGE
syndrome eight years ago and for whom Bella’s Angels
was established, ran in the race. New this year, runners ran
through Roger Dean Stadium across home plate prior to
the Marlins and Mets spring training game. Jarrod “Salty”
Saltamacchia, catcher for the Miami Marlins, was this
year’s official race starter.

The event raised more than $12,000 for Bella’s Angels.
Over the past nine years, the nonprofit has provided financial
and emotional support to numerous special needs children,
referred to as “Bella’s Buddies,” and their families.
Event sponsors included: Tri Bike Run, The Milk Jug,

About Bella’s Angels
Bella’s Angels Inc. offers assistance and support to
families of children who have been diagnosed with a life-long
physical disability. Bella Cavallo was officially diagnosed
with CHARGE syndrome at age 4. After struggling for
financial help with the mounting medical and travel expenses
associated with treating her daughter, Bella’s mother, Kerry
Cavallo, formed the foundation.
In addition to raising funds to help cover medical
expenses, Bella’s Angels provide family services, such
as emotional support, parent-to-parent assistance and
information on community resources. For more information
on Bella’s Angels, visit www.bellasangels.org.

Guests in sparkling gowns and tuxedoes were treated to
performances during dinner that included a rousing rendition
of Masters of the Maltz, featuring cast members from Les
Misérables performing a full song and dance set to the
musical’s tune Master of the House, but with personalized
lyrics written to honor the Golubs. Led by the theatre’s
Director of Education Julie Rowe, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s
Youth Touring Company performed an original arrangement
of Castle on a Cloud from Les Misérables, and 11-year-old

“Our biggest fundraiser of the year stayed true to the
theatre’s mission of entertaining, educating and inspiring
our community,” said Pamela Dyar, the theatre’s director
of development. “The Dream Ball’s success is a tribute to
the quality of performing arts education at the Maltz Jupiter
Theatre.”
Following cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, guests dined
like royalty on a succulent four-course meal, featuring beef
Wellington, a crab salad (complete with peas in a pod and
marigolds), and a dessert trio of caramel salted ice cream and
dark chocolates, key lime pie and fresh strawberries in a crystal
praline fruit cup.
“It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying an unforgettable
evening, and we are incredibly grateful for the tremendous
support from the community,” said Andrew Kato, the theatre’s
producing artistic director. “As the largest regional theatre in
Florida, we could not continue to thrive without those that
contribute to the theatre’s success.”
The annual event raised funds for the theatre’s awardwinning productions to help keep its performances affordable
for all, as well as inspiring the next generation of young
audiences through the theatre’s community outreach programs.
It also helped support local families by providing scholarships.
The event’s underwriting producers were Hawthorn,
PNC Family Wealth and PNC Wealth Management. Grand
benefactors included: Roberta and Harvey Golub, Roe Green,

Landscaping
Trimming And Pruning Is Essential
By Gustavo Asp, President, Magland Landscape Design
Pruning is essential to
trees and ornamentals to
promote growth, health in the
plant and maintain esthetics
in its location. Most important
is trimming and pruning
properly. Some plants are
trimmed when dormant
and some as it’s flowering.
Certain ornamentals need to
be cut back on an angle vs.
a strait cut. Some plants and
trees require sealing where cuts are made.
Ornamentals should be examined regularly for pruning.
If pruning is ignored, most specimens become overgrown
and often weak. At that point drastic pruning is necessary to
bring the plant back to usefulness.
Reasons to prune or trim plants:
• Maintain or reduce plant size – Pruning prevents a
plant from overgrowing its space and eliminates the need
for drastic cutting of crowded, overgrown plants.
Before
of the crown, it may be best to hire experts. Large tree pruning, in particular,
can require climbing and heavy saws or even cherry pickers and chain saws.
This is a job that should be left to trained and experienced professionals.
Never compromise personal safety in pruning a tree.
This is a great time of the year to trim and prune. It is pre-hurricane,
pre-rainy season and before the heat of the summer growing season gets
into full swing.
Magland offers tree trimming and pruning services year-round, please
call or e-mail for an estimate.

• Remove undesirable growth – Pruning can encourage
plant vigor through the removal of weak, overcrowded
growth. Thinning improves the visual balance or symmetry
of the plant.
• Remove dead, diseased, or broken branches – Pruning
will aid in maintaining the shape, vigor and health of the
plant.
• Stimulate flowering and fruiting – Removal of
the current year’s old, faded flowers and fruit clusters
will promote flower
buds for the following
season.
• Rejuvenate and
restore old plants
– Proper pruning
can restore a youthful,
natural growth habit
in certain overgrown
shrubs.
It is recommended to trim hedges on
• Prevent damage a regular basis to promote healthy
to life and property – growth
Pruning will minimize
the hazard of limbs interfering with power lines or
overgrowing structures. It also removes weak crotches before
limbs break in strong winds and open blocked sight lines
caused by overhanging limbs at driveways or street corners.
• Shape plants in an artificial form – Pruning and
shearing can be used to shape plants as hedges or for rigidly
formal espaliers or topiaries.
A tree may need pruning for a variety of reasons:
• to remove diseased or storm-damaged branches
• to thin the crown to permit new growth and better air
circulation
• to reduce the height of a tree
• to remove obstructing lower branches
• to shape a tree for design purposes
Once the
decision has
been made to
prune, your
next decision is
whether or not
to tackle the job
yourself. In the
case of a large
tree where you
want to remove
big branches in Early spring is the best time to prune and

Dating
Single Scene Column©
Interview with a Bachelor
By Kelly Leary, M.S., Founder of Revolution Dating
It was a beautiful spring
Florida day. Rachel McKee, vice
president of Revolution Dating,
and I were on our way to meet
a very handsome and successful
V.I.P. client for lunch at Brio.
We will call him William Cobb.
William is 58 years old and
widowed.
We enjoy getting to know
our clients in and out of the
office. “The Revolution is the
solution,” as one male client said
this week. With new members pouring in monthly, there is
never a dull moment.
As the lunch started, William began telling us how much
fun he had at our last party. He said he enjoys seeing the
old and new faces at our events. As hosts, we have to agree.
There was a woman there who he had dated once. She liked
him and wanted the relationship to take off. He didn’t feel
the same way. This woman (we will call her Joan Avery) was
beautiful, but we were just getting to know her as a newer
client. Talking to William would help us help her and him. I
love win-wins.
We chatted about what he LOVEs in women. Of course, like
all men, he is visual. He mentioned he likes a woman who is
well dressed, and he also highlighted that her demeanor should
be soft, easy and kind. (Good advice for Power Women.)
About half way through the lunch, we still wanted specifics
on Joan. There had to be more to the story.
Kelly: William, what didn’t you like about Joan?
William: She has too much money for me. (He said with
a grin and we laughed out loud too...he has a good sense of
humor.)
Kelly: No really, you seem to be such a good fit. Why
didn’t the first date lead to the second date?
William: She is too “uppity.” She looks down on others
and thinks she is above everyone. I don’t like it.
Kelly: Well surely, she could have just been nervous.
Maybe she needs a second date to see if it was just first date
jitters?
William: Well, there was more. She looked like she was
going to the gym and put little effort in her look. She spoke of
her ailments! She was very serious and a little somber even.
She also talked about her former husband and that made me
uncomfortable. Kelly, she was gorgeous, but she is NOT
for me. Looks don’t mean much when a woman is not good
company.
At that point, I felt I did my due diligence for Joan and
I knew I could give her constructive feedback for her next
match at our club. She really struck out with William and
needed some sisterly advice. In closing, you never get a
second chance to make a first impression. Ladies, show up
with your best outlook and image on your first date! We will
help you if you need it. You can always look hot no matter
what your size or your body type. So get your positivity on
and come see me when you are ready for romance! Just as
the day turns to night, we can help you find your match thru
our contacts and friendship.
I look forward to seeing you “out of your comfort zone”
soon! Wouldn’t it be nice to enjoy summer love this year?

Preventing Falls As You Grow Older
By Dan and Liz Brumer, R.Phs., Tequesta Drugs and Compounding Pharmacy
Whether it simply bruises
your ego or breaks a bone,
taking a fall is no fun. Each
year, one in three seniors 65
and older experiences a fall
– a number that has grown
in recent years. For people
in this age group, falling is
the leading cause of injury
and injury-related deaths.
Whether due to concerns about independence or worrying
others, however, fewer than half these people tell the doctor
about their falls. But that could add insult to injury because
one fall may lead to another.
Don’t keep it a secret. Be upfront with your doctor – and
with us. Provide details about when, where and how you fell.
We can help you pinpoint the problem and suggest changes
you can make. For starters, falling might be due to:
• A chronic health condition

• An infection
• A balance disorder
• Vision problems
• Muscle weakness
• Medications
Stay healthy. Fortunately, falls needn’t be a “fait accompli.”
Even simple lifestyle changes can make a difference in
preventing falls. This includes maintaining good physical
condition with exercise, sleep and nutrition. Also, stay well
hydrated with plenty of water. And limit alcohol, which can
slow your reflexes and throw you off balance. Wear properly
fitting, sturdy shoes with nonskid soles and toss out the floppy
slippers and shoes with slick soles.
With your doctor’s permission, engage in exercise that
improves strength, flexibility, balance and gait. This might
include walking, water workouts, chair yoga or tai chi – a
gentle exercise that involves meditative movements. Is a fear
of falling keeping you stuck in your easy chair? Your doctor
may suggest physical therapy or a guided exercise program.
Review your meds. Here’s where we can really help. Make
a list of your medications. Do any make you dizzy or drowsy?
Your doctor and I can review this list with you, discuss any
side effects that you are having and decide whether it makes
sense to change your medications. Of course, don’t make any
changes without first having a conversation with your doctor.
Make changes on the home front. Here are a few more
ways to help prevent falls at home:
• Clean up spills right away.
• Remove throw rugs.
• Clear newspapers and electrical or phone cords from
walkways.
• Use nonslip mats in the bathtub and shower.
• Put nightlights in hallways, bedrooms and bathroom.
• Keep flashlights in easy-to-reach places.
• Turn on lights before going up or down stairs.

The Nature Conservancy Honors Maggy Hurchalla
The Florida Chapter of The Nature
Conservancy dedicated a nature trail at
Blowing Rocks Preserve on Jupiter Island
to Maggy Hurchalla on Feb. 16, honoring
her for her ongoing dedication to protect
Florida’s natural environment.
At the event, while speakers listed just
a few of her achievements in the protection
of wetlands and uplands, dunes and creeks,
hammocks and scrub, Maggy beamed,
clearly enjoying most the retelling of
kayak misadventures and unscheduled dips
in the sea.
Maggy’s good friend Vevie Dimmitt
said, “Maggy’s Path is a connecting trail
with Maggy leading us on – connecting
us to nature and all things wild and each
other. That is so perfectly Maggy.”
Executive director for the Florida
Chapter of The Nature Conservancy,
Temperince Morgan, explains the reason
for “Maggy’s Path” dedication. “Maggy Eagle Scout Lukas Merklein (right) helped prepare Maggy’s Path” for the

contributed so much to environmental
progress in Florida. She has been a relentless champion of
Everglades restoration and has helped paint the vision for
Martin County’s future.”
Morgan continues, “Day in and day out, Maggy willingly
shares with young and old alike her fierce love and knowledge
of wild Florida through her nature walks and excursions. Her
support has allowed The Nature Conservancy to become a
protective force in Florida and around the world. We are
very grateful for her years of service as a board trustee for
the Florida Chapter.”
About:
The Nature Conservancy is a leading conservation
organization working around the world to conserve the lands
and waters on which all life depends. The conservancy and
its more than one million members have protected nearly 120
million acres worldwide. www.nature.org
Blowing Rocks Preserve is located at 574 South Beach
Road, Hobe Sound, FL 33455, about 25 miles north of West
Palm Beach on Jupiter Island. Blowing Rocks Preserve began
in 1969, when generous residents of Jupiter Island donated
73 acres of their island to The Nature Conservancy. Today
the restored preserve reflects what south Florida barrier
islands looked like a century ago with one of our state’s rarest
surviving landscapes – an intact Florida dune habitat with
beach sunflower, bay cedar, sea grape and sea oats.
Visitors may enjoy a restful, native plant demonstration
garden and interpretative signs are featured along three
hiking trails and boardwalks. Swimming, snorkeling and
scuba diving are allowed from the beach during listed
hours. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except for
major holidays. Daily beach access: $2 adults, $1 members,
children 12 and under are free. http://www.nature.org/

Strawberries For Dessert With A Mosel Riesling
By Glenn Sudnick, Certified Sommelier
If you dare, melt some dark chocolate in a shallow serving
dish and have some fun by dipping the strawberries in the
rich chocolate. Along with this great Mosel Riesling we may
have found the simplest most complete dessert, ever. So the
next time you think strawberries, I hope you remember the
great Rieslings of the Mosel.

Everybody has heard of
strawberries and champagne,
no doubt a great combination,
but strawberries with a Mosel

the perfect combination for
dessert.
Strawberries make for a
great presentation at the table.
At a recent food and wine
pairing I served this romantic
wonderful heart-shaped red
fruit with the stems attached
so my guest could pick the strawberries out of the bowl and
enjoy them while holding a glass of wine in the other hand.
My wine of choice was the Weingut Michael Goerg
Spätlese. This estate wine comes from the vineyard of
Goldtropfchen located in village of Neumagen. The wine is
packed with ripe fresh fruit flavors.
In the glass the wine appears pale green but the bouquet

Maltz Jupiter Theatre Announces 2015/16 Season Of
Shows, Another Op’nin’, Another Show
The Maltz Jupiter Theatre Is Ready To Entertain With Its 2015/16 Another Op’nin’, Another Show Season!
The 2015/16 season will begin with Agatha Christie: The
Mousetrap (Oct. 25 – Nov. 8), a masterful whodunit that
weaves an intricate plot filled with nerve-rattling suspense as
it follows a group of strangers stranded at a boarding house.
We continue with Billy Elliot the Musical (Dec. 1 – 20), the
electrifying Broadway blockbuster that follows the life of
Billy, the youngest child of a blue-collar family who discovers
his extraordinary gift for ballet. Next up is The Will Rogers
Follies (Jan. 12 – 31, 2016), a Tony Award®-winning musical
extravaganza that celebrates the beloved American entertainer
Will Rogers. Then join us for Frost/Nixon (Feb. 7 – 21),
Peter Morgan’s fast-paced, riveting drama that illuminates
one of the most monumental political interviews of all time.
Our incredible season ends with the Tony Award®-winning
phenomenon Kiss Me, Kate (March 8 – 27), a witty and
delightful Cole Porter musical not to be missed!
“Our audiences have come to expect a diverse season of
play and musical selections that are always re-imagined,”
said Andrew Kato, the theatre’s producing artistic director.
“As a producing organization that creates every element on
our stage specifically for our audiences, I look forward to
putting together amazing artistic teams – both locally and
nationally – to realize our eclectic season.”
Currently celebrating its 12th season, the theatre was
recently nominated for 14 Carbonell Awards, South Florida’s
highest honor for artistic excellence. To celebrate and
announce its 2015/16 season, the theatre held a cocktail party
on Feb. 9, featuring a unique photo opportunity for attendees:
photos with models showcasing costumes from each of the
theatre’s upcoming season shows.
In addition to its season productions (not included in
subscriptions), the theatre will present an exciting lineup of
all-new limited engagements and several popular favorites.
New shows include the jazz and classical sounds of the Joe
Scott Trio, featuring vocalist and cantor Jessica Turnoff
Ferrari, with Jewish Life in Music (Jan. 2); the song and dance
spectacular Live From Nashville (Jan. 18); and the Tony®nominated sensation Brenda Braxton, who will present an
intimate concert of Broadway classics in The Green Room
with Brenda Braxton: (March 30).

“Our theatre has something for everyone with our new
season of special events and concerts,” said Jennifer SardoneShiner, the theatre’s director of marketing. “In addition to
popular annual favorites, we’re proud to offer an array of
brand new concerts, including the stellar tribute groups Night
Fever: The Bee Gees Tribute and You’ve Got A Friend – The
Music of Carole King and James Taylor in February, as well
as the Celtic group Young Irelanders in March and the highenergy comedy piano show Dueling Pianos in April.”
November will bring an extra-special benefit concert:
An Evening with Christine Ebersole (Nov. 21), the theatre’s
third annual Tony Award® winner benefit concert. Star of
stage, screen and television, she will be backed by a 10-piece
orchestra and will enchant audiences with her glorious voice,
performing songs from Broadway classics and standards from
the great American songbook.

No More Grousing
By Jodi Cross
I stumbled across a new movement
taking hold on the Internet. If
you Google “Complaint Restraint
Project” you can learn all about
it. The initiative was established
by Thierry Blancpain and Pieter
Pelgrims. The mission of the project
is to create a more positive life by
eliminating negative statements for
30 days. “There’s no secret sauce,”
the Web site says. “Simply stop
complaining.” Unfortunately misery
just loves company, doesn’t it?
I thought I would give it a whirl, so I
enlisted some of my inner circle for a team style project. My sister
said it sounded interesting but she couldn’t commit to starting until
after the 19th of the month. Huh? Can it really be that difficult to
stop the grousing?
Fast Company picked up the battalion and even wrote a
post that lists ways to make not complaining a realistic goal.
Start By Defining What A Complaint Is:
Turns out there is a difference between an observation and a
complaint. Maybe I just tend to be very observant in my daily
life. Especially when I notice coffee dribbled on the floor or
laundry piled up. Perhaps people in my house just aren’t as
observant as I am. Is that possible? Or did I just slip back into
complaining? Seriously, a complaint brings about a negative
undertone and makes the energy drain out of you.
Track How Often You Complain And What About:
This opens the mindfulness cavern and really gets your brain
tuned into how habitually you fall into a pattern of complaining.
One morning while watching the news I had five slips in a
matter of minutes. Yikes, turn the television off, light a candle
and tune into some spa music.
Don’t Engage:
Skip the grousing fest and avoid friends who tend to overgrouse. If you have to attend a meeting or event, try to stay on
the fringe or add something positive. Just last week, I opened
my mouth to say I liked something and a certain person
pounced on me like Tigger in Pooh. The rant of expletives,
and “that is the stupidest thing I ever heard,” followed. Ouch!
Use The “But-Positive” Technique:
We all know this little trick helps you turn a negative into a
positive. Another way to phrase things is by turning a “but” into
a “get.” I have to pick up the dry cleaning. I get to pick up the
dry cleaning, which happens to be right across the street from my
favorite consignment store. I have to go up north in the middle
of a storm … but I get to spend time with my parents.
Just remember, ridding yourself of negativity takes work.
Don’t beat yourself up if you slip. Slips happen, just keep trying
to find the rainbow in the midst of the storm. I am working on
taking the challenge one day at a time. Won’t you join me?

In years past, the docks were alive
with some of the most magnificent
works of art handcrafted of wood.
Many of these beautiful yachts still
exist including Honey Fitz, the
presidential yacht, which served five
United States presidents including:
Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, Johnson Guests were entertained
and Nixon. Many other distinguished b y w a t e r j e t p a c k

yachts were also on display.
Our local celebrity John

his yacht at the Vintage
Regatta in West Palm
Beach. John and Jeanette Staluppi, docked their $37 million,
