Reflections on Term One
With term one coming to a close it is an opportune time to reflect
on what successes we have had together over the past ten weeks- as
well as taking the chance to think about the challenges that have
arisen and what we are doing together to meet them.
For individual students much of this reflection would be arising out
of our parent/teacher interviews held last week. I believe that
regular feedback for students from teachers and parents is a key
driver for improved learning. This feedback can also be used to
better make links for students on the strategies needed for the next
step in their learning. I have asked teachers to provide this
feedback to students and ask parents to do the same.
Our classes also have much to celebrate after some wonderful
learning together during the term. Our teachers and students have
been successfully building positive class learning cultures where
learning is the centre of activity and respectful relationships
underpin the work being done. In some cases more needs to be
done in this area and I know that teachers are doubling their
efforts, with support from our leadership team, during term two.
On the whole though, our classes are well focussed and disciplined
learning environments. The school is working with great purpose
on our success project and getting underway with the major
strategies identified in our Great Results Guarantee- a copy of
which is on our school website. This work has seen teachers
receiving coaching in the teaching of reading, additional support
for some students falling behind with reading, extension programs
for a number of students and screening our Prep students for their
language skills. This work will continue across the year with
different year levels and teachers accessing support at different
times.
Easter Vacation
Best wishes to all students and families for a safe and restful school

FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK
with Chris Godfrey
Hi Everyone,
Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended a meeting with their child’s teacher last week. It is
so important to create and maintain a strong and supportive partnership between home and school in
order to gain positive outcomes for all of our children. Please remember that you can arrange to talk to
the teacher at any time if you have any concerns, suggestions or questions.
We are all looking forward to a well-deserved Easter holiday! Our children have certainly been engaged in
their learning this term and many have achieved some outstanding goals. I have particularly enjoyed
watching our Preppies settle into school, getting used to routines and making friends. They are learning
so much, too!
Some important upcoming dates for you to make a note of

The traditional Prep- Year 2 Elimbah Easter Hat parade will take place this Thursday morning at



Parents are invited to attend this important solemn and commemorative occasion.



Education Week is in the middle of next term and will include:
 Grandparents Day in the Preps

SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Congratulations to all the Elimbah students who ran their hardest and tried their best last Thursday at
our school cross country. It was really great to see so many children enjoying themselves running,
proving that all the hard work they did in their training leading up to the cross country paid off in terms of
their general fitness levels. (The Run Around Australia competition was won by 4M for the seniors,
and 2O won the juniors) 4M and 2O received ice blocks for the whole class as their prize. Well done
to all the classes as the competition was very close!
The school cross country was won by BANKSIA this year with 271 points; 2nd place went to BANDY
BANDY with 254 points and 3rd place was BROLGA with 218 points. A team of 18 students have been
selected to represent Elimbah SS at the Glasshouse District Cross Country on 18th May. These
students placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd in their age groups (10-12yrs). Good luck!

INTERSCHOOL SOFTBALL
Last Friday Elimbah played the finals of the inter school softball competition. The
boys A team played St Michael’s College in the
Grand Final and won 12-5. The team played
extremely well and had a much deserved win –
needless to say they were very excited! The boys
B team(5th overall) and the girls A team(4th
overall) also did very well, so congratulations to
all the softball players this year.
Focus on Learning
4/5L News
Sizzling Starts, Dynamic Dialogue, Ban the
Boring, Tightening Tension – these are just
some of the 7 Steps to Writing Success that we
have been working on so far this year. This
week the kids will be putting all that into practice
and writing a short narrative as an assessment
piece for English this semester. I’m looking
forward to reading their creations. Also in
English, we have been working on QAR – a
strategy to assist with comprehension. The kids
have become excellent at determining the
different types of questions that they may
experience in NAPLAN for example, and how to
look for and determine the answers.
Did you know that plastic is the most common
form of litter at the school? Our class conducted
a “Keep Australia Tidy” activity as part of our
Geography unit on sustainable practices
recently, which involved collecting, sorting and
counting litter in just a small area of the school.
After the first break, we found well over 100
pieces of plastic litter and then after the second
break in the same area we found approximately
another 30 pieces of plastic. In these days of
packaging, it is probably not surprising, but
certainly a bit disappointing that we were able to
pick up so much rubbish from the ground in just
one day.
Last week we had a lot of fun planning,
designing and creating a diorama of an
environment for an animal living in Australia in
the year 2134. The kids had to determine some
adaptations that their particular animal may
have had to evolve to help it survive in a
changed environment and build their diorama to
suit.
We’re now looking forward to a well-earned
break over the Easter holidays.

What’s been happening in 1H
In English, we have been
enjoying reading stories
like Mem Fox’s “Koula Lou
I do Love You” and Jane
Hissey’s “Old Bear
Stories”. We talk about the
emotions in the texts and
act these out using our
puppet theatre.
Koala Lou
I do love you!
Every day we have Daily 5.
This is an important routine in our
classroom. We read in groups, by
ourselves and most of all we love to
read to our Year 6 buddies.
Being a good reader opens
many doors.
Most importantly we are
learning to be Learners,
Respectful and be Safe.

CHAPPY CORNER
Last Thursday, I had the privilege of watching all the
students run their cross country. In my opinion everyone
who participated was a winner, especially considering how
hot and humid it was. Watching all the students completing
their required distance reminded me once again how
unique we all are and that each student was motivated in
different forms to run/walk.
First I noticed the students who were focused on achieving.
Clearly, their motivation was to finish within the top few and
maybe even having a chance of receiving a ribbon to
acknowledge their achievement. Then there were some
students who seemed to pick up their pace and continue
even stronger after they had received verbal
encouragement. For some it was the social aspect, walking/
running with their friends that motivated them to finish. For
others it was the competitive aspect of the race, beating
their personal best time or a particular friend/classmate, that
kept them going. Also the prospect of being rewarded with a
nice cold ice block was a great incentive to continue and
finish the race. My favourite one was witnessing so many
students walking but when they came to the down slope
they all began running again, motivated by the joy they
would get from running down the hill!
Motivation is generally defined as the force that compels us
to action, it drives us to work hard and pushes us to
succeed. I personally have found it very helpful to know
exactly what motivates me to succeed. For example, I have
learned that on the days where I have no motivation to
tackle the never ending housework, a simple 'to do' list
compels me to action as I receive a great sense of
achievement every time I can cross something off my list.
The real importance of understanding the different types of
motivation is in our ability to determine which form of
motivation is the most effective for inspiring the desired
behaviour in either others or yourselves.
Have a fantastic week and a beautiful Easter!
With you on the journey…
