EASTER HAT PARADE
EGGSTRAVAGANZA!
Our Easter Hat parade and raffle on Wednesday
morning was the best parade ever! There were
many imaginatively decorated hats celebrating this
time of giving on show at our annual parade. It was
so good to see so many parents and grandparents
there to watch their children go around with the
classmates.
The two bunnies, Mr Madden and Mr Mak, did an
incredible job for the whole two hours! They
connected with the audience through their energy
and creativity continuously ‘high-fiving’
appreciative members of the audience and making
the receiving of hampers of eggs a great joy! They
did this while being wrapped up in a furry white
and pink suit on what turned out to be a very
humid day- gentlemen, for services to school and
country, I have been authorised to immediately
award you membership of the ‘White Rabbit
Society’. Benefits of membership to this selective
group go way back to Lewis Carroll’s era will be
revealed in the fullness of time.
Well done also to Mrs Dimovska for her leadership
and microphone work in keeping the program
entertaining and moving along, should you ever get
the urge to try another field, spruiking could be the
answer, but not yet Hurstville South does not wish
to lose you!
To the P&C committee and in particular Mrs
Scallone, a huge thankyou, I believe that early
estimates of the money raised are in excess of
$2000! This is a record and given that the eggs
were generously donated by our wonderful parent
community it is a real show of support as all funds
will go directly back into continuing to improve our
already great school. There are always huge
numbers of parents who come up and help out and
I would like to thanks the teams who came in to
wrap the baskets as well, we really appreciate your
support.
Congratulations to all the students for their
participation and to our school captains, Tim and
Sanjana for their involvement and leadership!
INTERRELATE FAMILY SESSIONS
On Tuesday night we held our bi-annual human
sexuality and relationship program for parent and
child. There was a large number of families who
took this opportunity to participate in what I
believe is a very professional and informative
presentation. Thank you to Sally and the team
from Interrelate for their services.
COMBINDED SCRIPTURE SERVICE
Our Christian denominations celebrated the
coming Easter with a combined service last
Thursday led by Mr Ball and his team from the
Anglican Church. Thank you to all of our religious
teachers for your support to our students as your
teachings, while they come from different faiths
and beliefs, we have many of the same values
and it is great to be at a school where we get
along so well together.
SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY
Staff will be working hard on Monday20th April,
which is our first day back following the two week
break, on preparing for a very busy Term Two.
We will be in serviced on improving student
writing outcomes, looking into improving our
student wellbeing program, mathematics and
some compliance training around the new
method of teacher performance and
development. The students will all come back to
school on Tuesday April 21st rested and ready.
ANZAC DAY SERVICE
This year Anzac Day falls on the first Saturday of
Term Two, 25 April, we will hold our service on the
morning of Friday April 24 at 9:30am in the
amphitheatre. You are all welcome as this will
mark the 100th year since the landing at Gallipoli
to mark a significant chapter in the history of
modern Australia. We also hope to have a current
member of the armed services attending the
traditional last post, and laying of wreaths by
representatives from all twenty classes.
Flower donations will be accepted in the office on
the Thursday morning 23rd and Friday morning
24th.
Our leadership team have also been invited to
march under the school’s banner at the dawn
service at Hurstville South RSL meeting at 5:30 am
on the Saturday morning.
SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Our cross country event will be held on Wednesday
29th April (Week Two of Term Two) in either Bell
Park or Quarry Park. Students should wear their
sports uniform on this day with sports shoes as
they will be running some distance, finalists will
then represent the school in the district cross
country event later in the term.
DANCESPORT CHALLENGE
Our Year five ballroom dance team will begin their
ballroom dancing tuition on Wednesday 22nd April
under the expert guidance of supreme dancer,
Natalia Danilova. This group of Year Five students
will learn four dances over the course of fifteen
weeks before going out to Homebush in September
to compete in the Gala Night competition. Good
luck and thank you to all of our families for
supporting this wonderful opportunity.
YEAR FIVE TO CANBERRA
On Thursday 30th April and Friday 1st May our
Year Five students will be visiting the nation’s
capital, Canberra on a whirlwind visit over two
days that will take in visits to Parliament House,
High Courts of Australia, The Australian War
Memorial, the Dinosaur Museum and
Questacon. The group led by Ms Tairi, Mr Madden, Ms Aronis and Mrs Streater will leave very
early on the Thursday and put in two extremely
busy days. This will be a marvellous opportunity
for this group to experience an overnight
excursion and a visit to a lovely and exciting city.
Thank you parents for supporting this program
and thank you to the teachers for creating this
opportunity for your students.

eligible to sit the NAPLAN assessments will do so
in week four of next term. Results from these
assessments usually arrive late in Term Three.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Thank you to the 80% of parents who attended
our Parent/Teacher interviews conducted over
the two week period. These information sharing
sessions play a vital roll in achieving continuous
improvement for students and we thank you for
your attendance.
Our move to the online booking system worked
extremely well for both school and home. Our
next interviews will be student-led conferences
on Wednesday 24th June.

Close the Gap
Close the Gap day March 19th
On Thursday 19th March, some students from Stage 1 participated in activities to
raise their awareness of the Close the Gap campaign. The Human Right's
Commission outlines that 'the campaign's goal is to close the health and life
expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and nonIndigenous Australians within a generation.' Student's learned that in some areas
of Australia the life expectancy is 10 to 17 years less for Indigenous people and
discussed some ways that the gap can be brought closer together. Our Aboriginal
Culture and Language students from year 1 created a chalk drawing with
Aboriginal patterns. The students from year 2 created a gap with an arrow to show
that they would like the gap to be closed and also sat in formation for the word
'gap'. Combined these images present the phrase Close the Gap.
