The Informer
Rachel Henderson, alias Mrs Meyer, wonders:
‘How to Raise a Child?’
From the Director:
Spring is certainly on the way! The increasing
amount of daylight both morning and evening are
our constant reminder that the seasons are changing.
And there are plenty of things blooming here at ISS
along with the seasonal change.
Even though our graduation ceremony is still some
months away, I wanted to share with you information
on this year’s graduation speaker. ISS has a long and
proud tradition of inviting some extraordinary people
to speak to our seniors on their last official event as
students at the school. This year’s speaker, Dr. Kirsty
Kemp, will undoubtedly be another great inspiration
to our students.
Water on its way!
Before Dr. Kemp was known throughout the world as
a scientist and researcher employed by the Zoological
Society of London, she was a student who attended
Kindergarten through 12th grade here at ISS. She
was known for her love of science early on and for
her sense of service to humanity. She founded the ISS
service club, IFG, which was one of her many good
ideas that live on today here at school.
According to her CV, her research interest is,
“. . . the study of deep ocean ecology with a primary
research interest in ecosystem function in the context
of developing realistic and sustainable management
practices in the marine environment.” In reality,
that means that she spends much of the year out on
research vessels, often deep, deep underwater. After
completing her BSc in 1998 in Animal Biology at
the University of St. Andrews, she then did an MSc
in Marine and Fisheries Science at the University of
Aberdeen before completing her PhD in Zoology
also at the University of Aberdeen. Whether she is
SCUBA diving, spending time in very cold climates,
(as in 42 days on an icebreaker in Antarctica), or
diving in a manned submersible off Portugal and lots
of places in-between, she is a perfect example of one
who is following her dream career. To learn more
about her research interests, go to http://www.zsl.org/
science/ioz-staff-students/kemp,1115,AR.html
As your spring schedule gets busy, I will mention
in advance that our two final events of the school
year, Baccalaureate, (Wednesday, June 5 at 18.00),
and Graduation which is where Dr. Kemp will be
speaking, (Thursday, June 6 at 19.30), are both held
here at school and are available for any member of our
school community to attend.
Does this thing work ..?

Congratulations and thanks to all of our student
athletes and coaches who are finishing up the
basketball season. The varsity boys and girls teams
travel down to the NECIS tournament to compete
against nine other international school teams. The
tournament is hosted by the Antwerp International
School.
www.isstavanger.no
While that tournament is underway, our middle
school students will be bedazzling three full houses
in our theatre with “Seussical the Musical.” We are
so fortunate to be surrounded by so many talented
primary, middle and high school students, (and the
dedicated adults as well), who are willing to share
their amazing talents on our stage!
Next up is the beginning of the spring sports season,
the primary school musical and ISS hosting both
the NECIS swim tournament and the ISTA drama
festival here in Stavanger this spring.
Another remarkable example of “Students in Action”
has been the high school students and their efforts
toward the “Cameroon Service Project.” Two years
ago, ISS 10th grade student, Stephane Ngueguim,
passed away very suddenly. It was a tremendously
sad time for all in our school community. But our
high school students clearly were not ready to allow
their friend and classmate to fade from their memory.
During both the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school
years, they have worked with Stephane’s family
to research and decide on a logical and realistic
legacy worthy of their friend. In the village where
Stephane’s family is from in Cameroon, there has
been an ongoing challenge to source and provide
clean drinking water. Our students have sponsored
projects raising to date over NOK 120,000 and the
ideas keep flowing in, just as the water has recently
started flowing in earnest. On March 1, the high
school talent show raised money for the water project,
on March 2, the remarkable Candlelight Dinner was
held here at school where the high school students
prepared and served a first-class meal with the funds
earned going to the same goal.“Stephane’s Trophy,”
a wonderful series of athletic events is soon underway
with the same goal for the funds raised.
Hard work in the heat of Africa
In the words of an e-mail sent to me by some parents
who were in attendance at the March 2 dinner, “. . . we
have just returned home from another very enjoyable
evening at ISS and felt that we had to convey to you
what a wonderful job all the students did tonight.
The food was great, the service first class and the
entertainment was, as ever, to a very high standard.
On our table we met a lady who did not have a child at
ISS and had never been to the school before – she had
simply come along to the dinner with another friend
of ours as company. She was absolutely astounded at
the level of professionalism and maturity displayed by
all of the students, even more so when she discovered
the reason behind the event tonight. We would be
grateful if you could please convey our appreciation
and congratulations to everyone involved in tonight’s
event, for a job very well done! They can all be very
proud of themselves and it must be a huge comfort
to Stephane’s family to see that their son has become
such an inspiration.”
Always in our hearts..
www.isstavanger.no
T he I nformer 6 M arch 2013 · 3
At the dinner, Marcel Ngueguim, (Stephane’s father),
made a presentation on the progress made and
potential projects that could be considered in the
future. One that he mentioned was stocking a library
for the local school. This was an idea that resonated
with me. Here at ISS we always have books to donate
as we are on a regular textbook rotation schedule. So
finding the books is not a problem. SHIPPING THE
BOOKS to a location is, however, always a problem.
The weight and cost are just not logical for the school
to take on as the normal shipping costs would be
far higher than the value. By writing about this, I
am hoping that someone in our school community
who has contacts in—for example—one of the oil
companies that have offices in Cameroon and are
regularly sending shipments down there, would
like to offer a wonderful humanitarian gesture of
being willing to ship our used books down to a very
welcoming library.
Our Board of Trustees has recently approved the
school’s updated Guiding Statements, and the school’s
new Vision Statement is “Inspire a community of
responsible, globally-engaged empowered learners.”
Anyone who has watched our Cameroon Service
Project participants in action would recognize that
our students are living examples of those powerful
words.
To read the complete new Guiding Statements, please
see them on the next page. They have been developed
through broad stakeholder contribution and will lead
the school into the next phase of the future.
Thank you.
My e-mail is at the bottom of this message—please
do not hesitate to contact me.
Our students have taught us some wonderful lessons
on how to honor the memory of their friend and they
inspire we adults to think about our role as well.

VISION STATEMENT
GUIDING STATEMENTS (Approved 4th February 2013)
Inspire a community of responsible, globally-engaged empowered learners.
MISSION STATEMENT
ISS provides an internationally-accredited, engaging and challenging English-language education in a
supportive, multi-cultural environment where students have the opportunity to fulfill their potential.
Our Aim
Our aim is to enable students to become self-determining, respectful, responsible, contributing global citizens
who will succeed in continuing educational programs and beyond.
Our Values
Learning
At ISS, we believe everyone is capable of learning and achieving. Developing a passion for and love of learning
is key to students becoming lifelong learners. Students are encouraged to reflect and develop an awareness
of one’s own learning process. In preparing for an ever-changing global community we inspire learners to
develop collaborative, creative, critical thinking and technological skills.
Well-being
At ISS, we value the whole child and believe students leading physically and emotionally healthy, ethical,
active and balanced lives in a safe environment will contribute to their self-esteem and enable them to
become more effective learners.
Community
At ISS, we celebrate the spirit of belonging and a sense of community at the school, local and global levels.
Respecting diversity and valuing international and intercultural understanding, the school fosters actions
intended to make positive contributions to a more equitable and sustainable world.
OBJECTIVES
ISS has developed the following strategic planning domains and operational objectives in order to translate
our Vision, Mission, Aim and Values into practice.
Core Objectives
Learning: Promote learning and foster intellectual growth at all grade levels.
Well-being: Provide a safe environment that nurtures the emotional, physical and developmental needs of all
its students, and promote the basis for a safe, healthy and meaningful working environment for our students
and staff.
Community: Foster meaningful multi-cultural relationships, provides support for internationally mobile
families, communicates effectively and encourages positive contributions in the school, local and global
communities.
Supporting Objectives
Governance & Leadership: Maintains effective governance and leadership to ensure optimal operation of
the school.
Infrastructure & Resources: Maintains an appropriate infrastructure in order to create a safe, pleasant and
effective learning environment.

From the Deputy Director
Dear families,
As outlined in my last Informer article and as described
by Dr. Duevel, the updated Guiding Statements
were approved at the Board Meeting on Monday 4th
February. Dr. Duevel has outlined the full Guiding
Statements in her article, but I will highlight a few
pieces here:
Core Values – As part of our school re-accreditation
process we will seek to explain what we do, what we
are committed to and generate evidence in relation
to our ´Core Values` of Learning, Well-being and
Community. By doing this we are overtly pinning
our sails to the mast, so to speak.
Our Vision: Inspire a community of responsible,
globally-engaged empowered learners.
Internationalism / Interculturalism – Also as part
of the work done by the Section A re-accreditation
committee on Guiding Statements we are required to
develop a ´school-based´ definition of Internationalism
/Interculturalism.
Our Values: Learning, Well-being & Community
As the updated statements were being shaped the
school administration and the Strategic Planning
Committee of the Board of Trustees have been
working together to ensure that our Guiding
Statements will be intrinsically linked to our school
strategic and operational planning process in order
that we ensure our Vision, Mission, Aims and Values
are put into practice.
This is very much linked to our value of community
which states: At ISS, we celebrate the spirit of belonging
and a sense of community at the school, local and global
levels. Respecting diversity and valuing international
and intercultural understanding, the school fosters
actions intended to make positive contributions to a
more equitable and sustainable world.
The process does not stop there, however. Our
challenge now is to ensure that our Guiding
Statements are widely known, understood, accepted
and used as a touchstone by all constituents of our
community.
As I said earlier, I will shortly put out some further
information relating to creating a visual representation
of our Guiding Statements so watch this space.
To that end there are further areas to work on and
these are outlined as follows:
Regards,
Visual R epresentation - In order to have the Guiding
Statements more widely known and understood
our challenge is to work towards finding a way of
encapsulating the essence of the updated statements
in some form of a visual. Some suggestions on how
we could make a more visual representation have
already come out during the many review meetings.
This has included someway linking the terms in the
statement to ´The Three Swords` or our logo of the
´Viking Ship´. Interesting ideas, don´t you think?
With kind regards,
Gareth Jones
Deputy Director
[email protected]
I will shortly put out a challenge to the broader
community to solicit their ideas on how this can be
best represented so we can generate a range of options
and a good deal of community involvement.

“Spring is the time of plans and projects.”
Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina
Dear 12th Grade Students,
Last week, I asked you to submit a university status
update and I am pleased to share that several of you
have received some wonderful offers, acceptances, and
scholarship awards from the UK, the US, Canada,
Holland, and of course, Norway! In the coming
months, I will continue to collect this information as
you become more certain of your final decisions. It
is an exciting time, indeed, but we have not reached
the finale yet! There are still assessments to complete
and exams that loom ahead. The finish line is within
reach, but until then, revise your work, review your
notes, and renew your spirits! Take care of yourself
by eating well and getting a full night’s rest. Take
advantage of the daylight hours and make productive
use of your time here at school by seeking teacher
support and working with your peers. Whenever you
begin to feel restless, anxious, or stretched, remember
to look around you. We are all in this together until
the bittersweet end and the 6th of June will be here
before you know it!
Dear 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th Grade Students,
At this point, everyone should have submitted their
course selections for next year. If you missed the
deadline, you may risk not getting your first choice
classes. If you had difficulty making your course
selections, please come see me – I am happy to help.
As you have observed from our senior class, the
college planning process is an intricate one. None of
it is difficult, but it may seem as such since it is the
first time you are consciously making decisions about
the rest of your life. There are many details and steps
involved. But everything we encounter in life begins
with a first step. So take one.
for international students and make sure you register
on-line prior to the deadline. Also check to see if
the College/University you are planning to apply
to requires the SAT II Subject Tests. If these are
required then it is recommended that you take these
during the fall semester of your senior year. However,
many universities are now allowing you to substitute
the ACT Plus in lieu of the SAT Subject Tests.
To register online for the SAT exam or SAT Subject
Tests that will be offered here at ISS on Saturday, May
4, 2013, go to www.collegeboard.com. Registration
deadline is April 5, 2013. Spaces are limited and
have filled up in the past. Do not procrastinate!
The registration deadline for the April 13, 2013 ACT
Plus exam is March 8, 2013. Again, do not delay
your registration in order to secure a seat. Please see
me if you are uncertain about which exam to take.
For students interested in applying to study Medicine,
Dentistry, or Veterinary medicine in the UK, it is
important to determine whether you need to take
the BMAT or UKCAT admissions test. Information
can be found at http://www.admissionstests.
cambridgeassessment.org.uk/adt/bmat and http://
www.ukcat.ac.uk/. Please make sure to check for
deadlines and exam locations. Reference materials on
preparing for these exams are available in the library.
TESTING REMINDERS for 11th graders
If you are planning to apply to a US, Canadian, or
American-style university in Europe, it is strongly
recommended that you take either, or both, the ACT
PLUS or SAT Reasoning Test once this next semester
and once during the first semester of your twelfth
grade year. Check the registration deadlines

In February we have had several external inspections
and survey:
• Ergonomical survey of the cleaning
personnel, made by Bedriftshelsetjenesten:
They suggested several areas were the cleaning
personnel could improve their work day in
doing the tasks in a slightly different way.
•
Inspection: Yearly inspection by the local
fire department to ensure the building is in
good shape as regards electrical equipment, fire
extinguishers, valves etc. We can be proud of ISS
and the job the Vaktmesters do, the status was
very satisfactory.
• Inspection og playground equipment made
by an external specialist: No severe findings,
but they pointed out some items that should
be improved soon, and some to be improved
as part of “regular maintenance”. The
improvements will be done as soon as possible.
Next month we will have a Safety Audit in Cafeteria/

Admissions: Morning Connections Series
March & April 2013
Hello,
You are invited to join us for the next "Morning Connections" events! These seminars are intended to provide parents with
opportunities to meet others in the ISS community and discuss a range of topics relevant to expat life, education and/or living
in Norway. More details and quick sign-up links below. Hope to see you there!
Kindly,
Katharine Mudra
Admissions & Communications Officer

MORNING CONNECTIONS:
T h u rs d a y s , M a rc h 2 1 & A p ril 2 5 -- 8 :4 5 -10 :3 0 -- I S S
Two upcoming “Morning Connections” topics are:
March 21: Culture Shock and Creating Connections
Many of ISS’ globetrotting families have lived in numerous corners around the world, sometimes quickly saying goodbye to one
home and culture and onto the next within months. The international way of living brings many benefits, but there are certainly
challenges too. It’s been said that “a successful moveable family is one in which each family member feels welcome, safe and
valued not only as a member of his/her family but also in the new community in which they live.” This session looks at culture
shock for parents and managing change as adults. It will also overview strategies for dealing with culture shock, such as
creating new support networks and meaningful connections during time of change.
We’re fortunate to have the talents and expertise of an ISS parent, Dr. Vlatka Duric, to lead the session. Dr. Duric is a
psychologist from Australia with extensive clinical and research experience with individuals and groups addressing change;
adjustment to change and loss; and, how to create safety and stability during and after change. She has developed and led
many workshops and seminars in a variety of settings such as communication skills training for medical students as well as
experienced doctors and nurses. She is a mother of two ISS students, an expatriate, a trailing spouse and once a selfproclaimed TCK (‘third culture kid’) herself.

April 25: Brain Research and Learning
“The brain is the last and grandest biological frontier, the most complex thing we have yet discovered in our universe. It
contains hundreds of billions of cells interlinked through trillions of connections. The brain boggles the mind.” – James Watson,
winner of the 1962 Nobel prize in Physiology/Medicine.
Parents, teachers, school administrators, psychologists and neuroscientists from around the world have been studying the field
of neuroeducation for decades. And the latest research about the adolescent brain, character development and intellectual
development is proving quite intriguing.
How do our perceptions of brain development and age differ from what the research is telling us? What are the environmental,
home and school patterns that lead to healthy – or unhealthy – development of children? How do we adjust to the complex
brain and motivational patterns represented by the diverse students in today’s classroom?
After introducing the brain and its inner workings, Ms. Carol Wallace, middle school principal, will discuss: the difference
between the young adolescent and adolescent brain (when is a brain fully developed?), the difference between the boy and girl
brain (what mindsets and motivation strategies work well for each gender?), and the effect of sleep, nutrition and technology
on brain development and a child’s attitude and ability to learn. Carol will share school practices and tips for home that are
aimed at creating positive experiences beneficial to character and cognitive development.
