How to Reduce Return Mail To ensure your return mail rates are as low as possible, and you are getting the maximum return from your required Move Update processing, it’s important to use the Data Services Return Code information you receive with your processed list. Return Codes are often improperly interpreted or even ignored—despite the fact that these codes provide crucial information that can greatly affect the profitability of a mailing. Although a list has been sent through NCOA Link® , which provided new addresses, the work is not done. The Processing Certificate, ® Link Return Codes, DPV Confirmation indicator and NCOA Return Codes should all be examined and used to weed out bad addresses. NCOA Link has specific return codes which identify information about what happened to the record. For example, the Return Code is a number indicating whether or not the address was successfully matched to the Change of Address (COA) database and, if no COA was found, the Return Code will indicate the CASS™ results. Note: DPV Confirmation only validates address information. It does not confirm the recipient is at that location.
