Even though the human services field has known this for almost 20 years, academic curriculums preparing counselors and social workers still fail to address this issue in a meaningful way. Providing direct services to families absolutely means encountering domestic violence. Victims may not admit it or even ask for help, but your involvement in their lives becomes a factor in the dynamics of those relationships. You may never learn the influence of your role, but it exists, nonetheless. This workshop will help ensure that the part you play empowers the victims, not the perpetrator. However insignificant your involvement may seem, at the time, never under estimate the potential impact you might have on an individual. I have heard hundreds of stories about how a “helper” was an unwitting partner in an abusive situation. But the ones that inspire me to facilitate this workshop are about the most unlikely of heroes who probably never realized they saved a life as the result of a single conversation. I invite you to be that hero. A Personal Message from the Presenter KERRIE K. WHEELER, MS, LCPC, has graduate degrees in both Human Services and Counseling. She began her counseling career at a community mental health center where she completed her supervision requirements for licensure. Intrigued by the challenges of working with traumatized youth, Ms. Wheeler found a home for her skills and interests as the children’s program director for a community domestic violence shelter. During her seven year tenure she built a clinical program and secured funding for several community projects through her grant writing and creative use of resources. During this time, Ms. Wheeler completed hundreds of continuing education credits that focused on effective advocacy for victims of domestic violence and the treatment of trauma. Her expertise in the area of domestic violence has made her a sought after speaker on the subject. Recent events featuring her presentations have included the 2011 American Counseling Association National Convention and the Montana Counseling Association annual state conference. Presenter The goal of this program is to provide a foundation for professionals to recognize how they can impact the dynamics of an abusive relationship. Participants will develop an understanding of how families are affected by culture, age, gender, and poverty. You will learn intervention techniques as well as tools and strategies for preventing collusion with the abuser and how to avoid enabling the victim. Although the general principles of abuse will be reviewed, this workshop assumes attendees have at least a basic understanding of domestic violence, its victims, perpetrators and implications for children. Domestic violence affects every segment of our population. The wealthy are not immune, and the impoverished are not the most affected victims. Every race, creed and cultural ethnicity experiences abuse. While females are more likely to be victimized by males, this dynamic is present in intimate relationships between same sex couples as well as in reverse roles where the female is the aggressor. This workshop will review case studies and explore real life scenarios with recommended interventions based on current research and best practice methodology to improve outcomes.
