INSIDE AND OUT – Knowing Your Risks
While heart disease and cancer remain the leading causes of death for males, issues involving the
prostate affect men of all ages. Fortunately, not all problems with the prostate are cancerous, and most
conditions – if caught early – can be treated or, in some cases, cured.

Women may receive relief from menopause
symptoms by exercising, as reported in a recent
issue of Annals of Behavioral Medicine. Out of the
1.5 million women between the ages of 45 and 55
who reach menopause every year in the United
States, 80 to 85 percent experience irritability, mood
swings, hot flashes and night sweats. In the study,
which was conducted at Penn State University, 164
menopausal volunteers were divided into three groups. One met three times a
week to walk for an hour, the other met twice a week for 90-minute yoga sessions
and the other group didn’t exercise. The women in the walking group reported the
most improvement in mood, hot flashes and night sweats. The yoga group reported
similar, but slightly smaller, improvements. Experts say changes in lifestyle and
nutrition also can help decrease the symptoms.
